  1. Here is a link for more info: http://www.summerpearl.com/index.htm Plus Ebay has a uniform up for bid item # 220204715986 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=220204715986&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=012 Good Luck!
  2. Bob White says: >>>"Captainron, where did your quote come from. I cannot find where any poster has said it or mentioned a venture patrol?">>"I would be curious to see if it might be possible to have them establish a venture patrol at NYLT, if we can combine several crew's worth of officers, along with my two boys who are leaving the troop to possibly join the one crew."
  3. "a venture patrol at NYLT"? A Venture patrol is very different from a Venturing Crew. The Venture Patrol is just a patrol of older Boy Scouts for High Adventure. For Boy Scouts, meaning, no girls. It is run totaly different than a crew. I would pursue a Kodiac course, if I were you, it would be more valuable to Venturers.
  4. This attorney is a first class ambulance chaser. He has a similar case in the Portland OR area, against the Council and the LDS church. Probably more elsewhere. He advertises on a web page looking for "victims" of the LDS Church, BSA, etc. Just wait, I'm sure he will be sniffing around your town or city, and I'm sure he will find someone who will remember that back in 1965 at summer camp "something" happened. And that BSA and or _______church has to pay for that! No one mentions anything about his "fee". He certainly not doing this for free. When I hear about guys like this, I think Shakespeare was right about Lawyers. He makes me sick.
  5. John, You are so right. What I can not understand is the "circus" atmosphere that is going on about this "rebate". Everyone is treating this as if they have won the Lotto. Very few understand that this is not "New" money. It's like taking an advance on your paycheck (or in this case next years return). You have to pay it back (subtract it from your next refund). There is no such thing as a free lunch. Another sad thing is the "fools" who are thinking how great the President and Congress are to do this great giveaway. it goes to show you how many people in this country are really "sheeple". Maybe I can find one of them to buy that "Ocean front" property I have in North Dakota. ;o)
  6. Just how will quitting scouting relate to and/or help change, what our government is doing? And how does not attending flag ceremonies or not rendering honors to the flag relate? Your argument sounds a bit sad to me. The Flag represents what our country stands for. Not some half baked politician. In the military some people say you may not respect the man who is the commander, but you respect his rank and position. One of the strengths of our country is that we can agree to disagree. However, something happened around the mid 1990s and has only gotten worse. Open "Political Hatred". People who despise the other party so much, that it affects how they live their lives, who they associate with, and who they do business with. These are people who are Republications or Democrats BEFORE they are Americans. Bipartisanship is almost dead, and those who have "the most marbles" at the time, love shoving "their" views down the others throats. Cooperation? Whats that? It's, "wait till I'm in charge and then you will be sorry!" In my opinion, we need to heal this country. Hopefully cooler heads will prevail this election and elect someone who can bring this country back together. Not another 8 years just like the last 16. That person can be either Democrat or Republican for all I care. Just be American First! As for those people (the day after the election) who put a Bumper Sticker or sign on their car or house that says "___________ is not my President", start heading north to Canada. Then that will be true (for you). We do not need any more hatred here. Regardless of what those people think, the USA is still the best thing going, and if you don't think so? Pack your bags and go check out that "greener grass" on the other side of the fence. You will find that all that is there, is the weeds "painted" green. BTW, That flag you do not want to "render honors to" also represents the thousands who died to give you the "right" to post your views on this forum. Find another way to protest, like voting, and show the youth of our great country (your scouts) that you too, are are an American first. OK, I'm off my soapbox now.
  7. Well, You all thought I was crazy or trying to start burning books. Well I think some of you understand what I was saying. Check out: http://www.scouter.com/forums/viewThread.asp?threadID=179641 You be the judge. Is this guy for real or what? First you get the "Antichrist" (pun)Meryln. Then you get the "Brown Shirt" Pappy. Sorry if I have offended anyone, but both keep things stirred up on the list. Are they for real? Plants (not the potted variety) or harmless "wackjobs"? And if someone has to ask, I'm none of the above.;o)
  8. Well, it looks like the last "rebate". Just don't count on a big refund next year. Plus, make sure you have enough deducted to cover what ever you get for your "rebate" or you might end up giving some of the great "free money" back. This is such a scam. FROM CNN Today. "The tax rebate would be similar to the $300 to $600 checks that were sent out in the summer of 2001." See link below: http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/01/23/economic.stimulus/index.html
  9. Before anyone gets too excited and planning on how to spend this money. Don't forget the last "Tax Rebate". It was a number of years ago I think it was $250 or $300. The sad thing about it was that it was not "new" money. All it turned out to be was an advance on the next years tax return. So when you filed you taxes, your refund was lowered by the amount of the "rebate". Hopefully this "new" rebate will not be like that. Anyone remember what I am referring to?
  10. Hi Pappy, First of all, I'm having trouble understanding why you posted this under the "Venturing" program forum. Venturing is the most flexible of all of the programs of the BSA. There is no requirement to be coed. Some crews choose to be all male, all female, or coed. You will never find two crew exactly alike. Some are very specialized, some are very general. You talk about traditional Boy Scouting? Well there are Crews who specialize in reenacting the old Senior Scouting programs of the 40s and 50s. Or how about the crews who are focused in military reenactment of the Civil war? There are other area for Venturing; Sports? High Adventure? Arts & Hobbies, Even Youth Ministry. It's all there. Have you looked at the Venturing program closely? Have you checked out what was involved in earning some of the recognition awards like the Ranger? If not, you might be surprised in what this program has to offer. Far too many people know nothing about Venturing except by rumors or hearsay. Venturing is a great program that has much to offer out older youth if it is done properly. It is not "Advanced Boy Scouts with Girls." It is much more than that! Venturing pulls much of it's current identity from the early Explorer programs. A Venturing Crew is what it's members want it to be. Uniforming included.
  11. "PC"?? Or perhaps a GSUSA unit will not have the "flavor" of it's CO because GSUSA does NOT utilize Charter Organizations! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Your are right, they are two different types of organizations. In my opinion it's because of this you will not find very much "flavor" with the GSUSA. Very bland and generic, VERY PC. That is from my experiences with different GSUSA units in three separate states. They control the leadership and content and they "own" the unit. It is just the oposite with BSA. Novice_Cubmaster I am sorry for diverting the original thread. I should have kept my personal views about the GSUSA out of this thread.
  12. How about doing like the Football fan commercial where they paint their bodies their team colors. Just think, one good coat with the spray gun at the begining of Summer Camp and no worries about not wearing the uniform for the whole week!;o) No laundry, just hose them off!
  13. The "Profile" for forum members seem to never work. I have updated mine a number of times and it never "takes". Plus there are many who for what ever personal reason choose not to have one. Since these two reasons are the majority for why it is not being used. Why have it?
  14. FYI for you Venturers out there. According to the Venturing Division at National. Mr. Bill Evans. The current "Recommended" Uniform for Venturing will NOT have any changes. There will be "switchback" pants, but not radical color/design changes.
  15. Class of 81 Son, Class of 06 and Son, Class of 09? Formerly CM, SM, ASM & Ventuing Advisor Currently ADC for Venturing and District Trainer, Venturing Still trying to give back what I (and my Sons)got out of Scouting.
  16. Moderators/List owner I have posted on this forum for a few years and have enjoyed the conversation and information that goes on here. Lately, I have been wondering if some of the "members" are not really actual people who are here for their own personal enrichment or to contribute something of value. They are actually just agitators keeping the "stew" well stirred. They are the ones saying really "out there" comments. Definitely not main stream, kind of from outer space. Mostly VERY anti-scouting. If they had there way the courts would have closed down BSA a long time ago. One thing these people are not involved in scouting. They in no way shape or form abide by anything remotely close to the values of scouting. So that being said, why do you as list owner and/or moderator allow this? Other than keeping everyone "stirred up", or playing the "free speech" card (everyone is entitled to their own opinion...) why do you put up with this garbage. It seeps into every part of the forum. It is the main reason that I "lurk" most of the time or frequent the other more "Scout like" forums/lists (as do many others). The name(s) do not need mentioning, it's obvious. So fess up. Are they "on the take" as secret agitators or are they just whack jobs that are convenient to have around and you don't want to be bothered by banning them from the forums? (even though by doing so goes WAY beyond following the Scout Law)
  17. Back to the original question. As some of the more esteemed members of this forum have said previously (and tried to keep on topic). "As much or as little as the CO and parents want". That sums it up nicely. Some units will maybe have a prayer before meals (or not), while some will do that and have a evening devotional and or scripture reading too. Some will not camp on Sunday, some will. Some observe "Scout Sunday", some do not. etc. A huge example is in Venturing, where there are Crews chartered to Churches who use this as their "Youth Ministry" (IE; Religious Life Bronze & TRUST award). That is the beauty of the CO program with BSA. The unit will have the "flavor" of the parent CO when it come to religion. You can not have that with GSUSA. it's not "PC". BTW; Pappy, great story. My hat is off to you and your boys.
  18. Well in my Council, every District has a patch. Many units Cub and Boy Scout wear them in the "Temp" position. The main reason is that some use the segment program, for events, achievement etc. Sewn around the patch. I find that some (both youth & adult), know nothing but that. When we first moved here, a number of the local UP tried to give my sons a hard time for not wearing the District patch. They both wanted to wear their "international event" patch when they noticed that no one else had it besides them. They were harassed for a while until it was realized that no one was listening. Now there are more and more scouts who choose no to wear the District patch. Although in Cubs, it is very big. You will see them with 2 or more rings around the patch. Looks like a big "bulls eye" on their chest (very cluttered). I have been in other Councils who had similar programs. I sat on an EBOR for a 17.99 year old scout who had not worn a uniform in 4 years. He showed up in a borrowed uniform with a District patch in place of the CSP. While the kid was an "OK" Eagle candidate (not great, but still OK), one of the board was fixated on that patch and would not even consider accepting him as an Eagle. We had to adjourn and come back with a new board. He did pass though. YiS
  19. My son was too young for the last Jambo, so the 2010 Jambo will have to be "it" for him. I have heard of great things for those who can afford to go with a Council troop, but also great things for those who go as youth staff (16 & above). I am wondering about which way will be best. My son has talked to a few youth staff who worked at the Venturing "mine" and a few who were at other exhibits. He also has talked with a fwe scouts from his troop who went to 2005 with a Council troop. He is leaning towards going as staff (at least applying for it). Aside from the cost diffrences (huge) and no touring (be there, done that). What are the pros & cons of each? FYI, we would be traveling from the Northwest. BTW, I am considering on applying for staff also, any tips, insights? Thanks
  20. Sorry MVScouter, There is no such thing as a Venturing Patrol. The correct term is a Venture Patrol. It is part of the Boy Scout Program. So, if the scout earned the Religious Award while a part of a Venture Patrol, he would wear the Boy Scout Device. If he earned it while registered as a Venturer in a Venturing Crew, he would wear a Venturing Device. Two separate programs/divisions of BSA.
  21. Here is the text of the email from another list: This is refering to a NEW knot. Why? I do not know. I was hoping that someone would have more info than the orginal source. Thanks >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> For you knot hounds...(or is that knot heads?) Just received word that National has approved a new knot, for those with a doctorate in commissioner science. I don't have the requirements, just know that it has been approved, and that the requirements are such that it can be earned and worn even by folks in councils without a college of commissioner science.
  22. I have heard that National is putting out a new knot for Commissioner Service. Anyone have news/info on this? Requirements? Reason for this knot coming out at this time? (If it really is) Thanks, CR14
  23. Why is it that there are so many people (a lot of them ex-mormons)so determined to tear down the Mormon church? You do not see the Luthuran Church producing videos and preaching against the Quaker Church. It seems to me that the Catholic Church is the only other church that gets as much flack as the mormon church. I hear it all the time from my neighbor (a Baptist) about their idol worshop, etc. Another common thread is with the Anti-mormon books and movies is that they are by former members who have been kicked out of the mormon church and are bitter and want revenge (once upstanding leaders do something and get caught, adultry, preaching agaisnst the church, etc). The Catholic church does this too I think. They (the excommunicated catholics) do the same thing it seems too. Most of those who say they know all about the Mormon Church, really know nothing at all, just what someone made up, or read in a bad comic book (BadenP's post is a great example). le Voyageur, you say you were LDS for 30 years before being excommunicated? Do you fall into that catagory, or the previous ones? If you say that you were once LDS you can't possibly agree with him (BadenP)? So back to my orginal question from my earlier post: Which Church is next on the block? No mater what denomination you can think of, there will be something(s) that can be torn down, belittled and "Proven wrong/false or what ever. Come on now, lets keep this fair. Packsaddle, who's next? Who's religion does this list of Scouters go after next?
  24. ALL, From a lot of Scouters who I love to get great information and advice, many of you are putting out quite a bit of misinformation and out right falsehoods (I won't be like Merlyn and call you all Liars! ;o)) It appears to me that what is being said as fact, is really opinion, or in some cases repeating some Anti-Mormon propaganda. Some of you have made attempts to defend their freedoms, but many have just added fuel to the fire. Is there anyone who has posted here that has FIRST HAND KNOWLEDGE of their beliefs? Not some garbage from someone who knew someone, or a book written by an EX-Member who has an ax to grind about the Mormons, or one of those great Anti-Mormon Videos that is circulated by some churches. A real active Mormon? From what I have seen the answer is no. I have met great people in Scouting from every religion that I can think of. Most, if not all, if asked, would say that their church had the "truth",(or more than others). But most are good people who try to follow the principles of the Scout Oath and Law (not just the first 11 points)and don't make judgements about you because of your religion. Most don't even know what church you belong to. The Mormon Church has it's problems, but so do all of the other churches. Worry about yours. Matthew 7:5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. In my view, this thread is way out of line. Who is next? What church will this list pick a part because we don't agree with their views/beliefs? And don't try to hide behind any of the Citizenship MBs, this goes against the Scout Law (ALL 12 points!). This has nothing to do with Scouting. I should have known better to read a topic in the "Issues/Politics" section. I'm sorry if I have offended anyone, this topic/thread goes against my "grain". That's my 2 cents and change. YiS & V CR14
  25. A while back I ran into a troop from the Seattle area that instead of wearing the regular red/white numbers, they had an arrow shaped patch with their number in white on it. They said it was their orginal patch and they were "grandfathered in" using it. They said they have been chartered since the early teens. Anyone else hear about things like this? About wearing the older uniforms. At a ECOH sometime ago I had the honor of meeting the Eagle Scout's Grandfather who was an Eagle himself as well as a former SM back in the 30' & 40's. He wore his old dress uniform. Was it cool! SM Lapel pins, felt service stars, and the older versions of the Silver Beaver, Scouters Key and Training award. Not to mention a very colorful Veterans patch on his sleave. Of course he was wearing his Eagle too. He presented the Eagle to his grandson. How cool is that!
