I sincerely do not intend to troll. I maybe over reacting a bit but I have enough health problems that I really want to avoid getting sicker than I already am. I do not personally know anyone with lymes, but it sure would be devastating to deal with. I really did try a mirror and didn't think I could see something as small as a tick well enough. I have never been on more than a two night campout, so my inexperience and paranoia shows. I must sound like one of those Girl Scout Moms who just wants to craft. Suburban life will do that to you. I will try to just relax and enjoy myself. Leaving Sunday morning so I you get a week off from me. Some Ding Dongs and Kool Aid sure sounds good right now. Lol

I would like to see written BSA policy about the meaning of cut off corners. What does cutting off a corner mean ? It means nothing. Your Dad/SM is making up rules. Does he have the authority as a father yes, as a SM NO! Cut of corners mean nothing. Correcting a scout who makes a mistake means everything. Corner cutting is not BSA policy. Please show me I am wrong.

So, a tick can give nasty diseases in as little as 24 hours. We are there to help protect these boys as best we can. There are places ticks like to attach to your body you cannot see unless you are a yoga master. How is this issue handled ? I assume YPT prevents adults from doing a full body check on the boys. Can the boys do a check on each other ? Would asking that of another boy be considered offensive ? What if one of the leaders is a RN ? I plan on taking precautions and I can certainly check my son and have him check me. What about the other boys?

MattR, I agree with you. Because someone messes up and repeatedly does not make them a bad person. I have seen kids really turn themselves around and I believe more in where they are going than where they have been. I think looking at the past six months or so should weigh heavily in any advancement decision.

Maybe it is similar to how many feel you get into the kingdom of God. You can be a total schmuck your whole life, but as long as you accept Jesus seconds prior to your death you are in. I was never comfortable with that policy, but many influential conservatives are. I would keep in mind the BSA is bestowing a rank, not sainthood.

Is "Belief in a Supreme Being" an Actual Rule by Now?
King Ding Dong replied to DWise1_AOL's topic in Issues & Politics
I don't know the answer to your question, but many powerful Christians feel they have the authority to make a judgement about the legitimacy or non-legitimacy of others belief systems. We see it constantly from our politiians. I suspect the answer to your question really depends upon who ask and who has power at any given moment. -

Naw, that was me pretending I was from the Ozarks and not St. Louis.

This is LDS, new pack is not really an option.

But that would just ruin it for the dads that work at Boeing and use the wind tunnels for fine tuning.

I had to buy my Scout side locking Gerber because he couldn't safely unlock the standard locking knives. I don't let him have it unless we are on trips away from his little brother. (7).

Most boys will put anything and everything on them. That said, a couple of years ago I saw a full page ad in Boys Life pushing an "official patch only" pledge. Scouts who pledged to only collect officially licensed BSA patches got a special patch showing their pledge. I have not seen to many of those patches. You could also take a look at the Webelos Traveler requirements and have them "practice" some of those map and distance skills. They will have to do them again, but my parents always armed me with a map on road trips so I could track of where we were and what was coming up next. Beats playing Minecraft on the iPod.

BD, It has been a very wet spring around here. When we took our bike camping trip a couple of weeks ago the mosquitos caught everyone by surprise. They were bad and most of us only had 25% DEET, I went and got some 100% and that helped but my boy's legs were a mess. Easily 30 bites. I don't know what it is about him but Mosquitos just love to suck his blood. Maybe it is because he has no fat on him and his skin is stretched tight over those boney legs. Or maybe his red hair attracts them. I picked three ticks off of me sitting in a chair reading. The park ranger said he only uses 100% DEET. It may take a few weeks off his life, but says those are the worst ones. Them skeeters and hicks can be very bad round these parts. A couple of years ago in Nebraska I had to leave camp for work on a Saturday morning. Came back about 2:00 to break camp and l left the Off at camp. In the 200 yards to my tent from the car I swatted at least 10. My arms were covered in streaks of blood.

Several families in our troop treat clothing with Permetherin for mosquito and tick control. The most popular product seems to be Sawyers, but it is very expensive. ($15 for 4 outfits) Searching the backpacking forums it seems many buy concentrated 10 or 36% and mix a batch to soak their clothing in. As long as you get the kind that does not have petroleum addititives they claim it works just as well and is 20x cheaper. Does anyone have experience with it using either method or product ?

No. He didn't make a big deal about the hat, they did.

When you say "patches" do you mean official BSA awards or generic patches. Scouts earn awards and those awards may be in the form of a patch on a few occasions. If you are just looking for patches just google Cub Scout patches and there are companies that will sell you a patch for tying your shoe to visiting a museum. I am sure you can find a canyon patch somewhere and certainly there are lots of Rosewell patches. You could even get the the Citizen in the Universe Merit Badge. That's a big loophole in the program. Cubs can earn fake Merit Badges. If they attend a council day or resident camp they can work on the outdoor activity award. Practice LNT on the trip and work on that one. Maybe the world conservation award. Away from the city is also a good time to do astronomy. Make sure you look through the bear requirements and electives for activities. I do not think cubs have any awards that are tied to a certain geographic area, would not seem very fair to those far away.

This is good practice for his wedding. Keep your nose out if it, you play a supporting role. Do you WANT him and his wife to resent you ? Make a nice display of memorabilia from his scouting career and leave the rest him. Lots of pictures of him as a Tiger. That's as far as you get to go.
