National Outdoor Achievement Badges and Award
King Ding Dong replied to King Ding Dong's topic in Advancement Resources
Ok, been a long day. We're good. -
January of this year (2013) has already past. If you mean January of next year, the question is does he meet the joining requirements. If he does then it is up to the troop and if he will fit into their program. If you are fudging the joining requirements then ???

He wants to earn the award. Clear from the post. I am trying to understand the BSA legealese, You expect a child to do that ? -

Really ? And your evidence is what ? So much for a scout is courteous. My son want to camp, hike, canoe, sail and bike. His troop wants to play baseball, la cross and Halo. You are right about the outing in scouting, what part of this award involves sitting around in a cabin ? -
What are they doing in Patrols if they are in cub scouts ?

Anyone care to price out the Horsemanship MB plus 450 miles of riding at a Scout Ranch ? (2 gold devices required for Medal). After that the medal better be gold. -
A fellow scouter of mine told me this... She feels the Medical Forms are a free pass to violate the Scout Oath. Dr. signature and all. I gave her lots of grief over it, but she insists she is an adult and her medical history is between her and her Dr. She conceded her insurance information, though couldn't understand why the BSA needed it, because she gave them an emergency contact and hospitals are required to provide emergency care. I tried to convince her otherwise, but to no avail.

Why Wood Badge?
King Ding Dong replied to packsaddle's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Notice how these ceremonies are IMPOSED on people, no one is ever INVITED to attend. There is never an announcement that they will occur, never on the agenda. "There are a bunch of unsuspecting suckers sitting there politely, I have captive audience! My chance to bore them with stories of the Zulus, the Boar War and ancient customs of British Military Service. Yeah ! My lucky day." -

I have seen so many of these things in the past few months I am starting to get the idea these guys bead them selves once for each ticket item. Oh, and I have news for you. We already know what a Turks knot is, I don't need a five minute explanation ! -

I know I have seen Venture Patrol referenced on this board. Usually a patrol of boys in the troop more interested in HA type activities that do their own thing, but not part of the Venturing program. I do think having a clear definitive understanding of what the award committee expects for this award would be a good thing. When a scout goes out selling popcorn door to door is he not taking part in an activity "under the auspices of the BSA" ? If he is wearing his uniform and does his good turn helping the proverbial little old lady cross the street. Is he not acting "under the auspices of the BSA" ? -

Thanks for the info, I have previously reviewed it. I have not contacted national, but expressed my extreme displeasure with the Swimming MB to the Camp Director. I suppose he is part of the problem as well and I should take my concerns higher. Thanks for the nudge. My District much less my Council does not want to have anything to do with you unless you have Woodbadge. I am two months out of ALT/IOLS so Woodbadge will have to wait until at least spring. After I fix the adult participation problem with my pack (no Cubmaster, treasurer, popcorn kernel or trainer). and the sedentary troop program I will look into it further. My hands are pretty full at the moment at the unit level. I am also now PTO President and therefor IH, so at least my decisions stand. If I read current BSA lifeguard documents correctly they don't want you to take the course unless you plan on actually guarding at a council facility. For the unit level they want you to take the two new courses you did. -
Council respect for volunteer time (or lack thereof)

I read this thread again and only found two members that I would consider flamed GM before she deleted. Brewmeister and our good friend BD. Those of us who on here frequently know that BD is just that way and his bark is worse than his bite. He can sure dish it out, but he can take it as well. Courteous responses just are not in his nature most days. In my opinion she was not ganged up on at all, just barked at by a couple our more rabid members. I believe everyone else was courteous in their response. Unfortunately, she was already burned out on the program for the same reasons I originally engaged her in conversation and it certainly took a different direction I intended. I am sure she has left the room. The lesson here is when you vent, expect people to vent right back at you. -
What does the DE and SE hold over you to convince you to violate the scout oath ?

I am glad to see you have had good experiences with BSA Aquatics staff. I am sure there are many quality people in the program. My recent observations of BSA aquatics staff have not been the same as yours unfortunately. I would prefer not to have to type the long list of requirements that we not even touched much less tested on at a recent swimming MB class conducted by an BSA Aquatics Program Director. Blue Cards signed. I have reviewed the BSA requirements and see no significant difference from the Red Cross requirements. Furthermor the BSA program requires the use of the Red Cross manual. Can you elaborate on how it is far superior other than buddy board training ? I can not speak to Y certified lifeguards, I am Red Cross certified. -

He does have a point. Oxford dictionary Phrases under the auspices of with the help, support, or protection of: the delegation’s visit was arranged under UN auspices If unit leader defines an activity then it is under the the auspices of the BSA. When a scout is working on a merit badge it is under the auspices of the BSA. If an activity is conducted with a cycling club then it is not under the auspices of the BSA. Does a unit leader have the authority establish a "venture patrol". Does the BSA have a minimum patrol size ? I however think the best option is to find an active troop. -
Of course Sasquatch is real. I see him on the Jack Links commercials all the time. http://www.jacklinks.com/the-wild-side/commercials.aspx

It's supposed to mean that you didn't prove you were a human by entering the write captcha code, but it doesn't even ask you for one (I'm having the same trouble). Can't get PM to work but can start threads. You must not be worthy. My favorite is it likes to remove all my return characters so I look like a idiot. -
Can anybody explain how Newt is now a Catholic ? Is it because he wasn't one in his previous two marriages, so those do not count ?

Unfortunately, Word Economics seems to have been left off the syllabus at Woodbadge. When a Woodbadger starts his speech it is time to excuse yourself for the restroom. -
Question about lightning - need your opinion
King Ding Dong replied to dennt's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I think your best bet is to climb to the top of the climbing tower and scream "Bring it On !" the whole storm. As long a you make it the rest of the camp will never look at you the same way again. A good half of them will follow you anywhere and the other half will stay very far away from you. -

Dinning hall was a pavilion. Instructions were stay were you were and wait it out. I know climbers coil their rope and sit on it. -

Without the support of the committee the SM is rather powerless. So if lawyer dads can't get it through their heads that their sons won't be horribly corrupted and traumatized seeing some beer bongs the trip doesn't happen. There is no single run on the rivers here, they would be unavoidable, I suppose. Most of these boys are involved in multiple sports so scouting is just one of their activities. The parents have their eyes on one thing and one thing only. I am sure you can guess what that is. It is not adventure. It remains to be seen if the program is truly set by the PLC (That will happen in August) A float trip was on the calendar for May but was switched to a 4 hour bike trek. I was told because there was no coordinator for the event even though I had gotten pricing for it. There was a coordinator for the bike trip the same weekend. Get the picture ? I don't know much about hunting, not against it at all, just don't view ambushing an animal from 200 yards away with an precision projectile traveling at 3500 MPH as much of a sport. I took one out with a 76 LTD driving down the highway, thats one elusive creature. Drop down on it from your perch in a tree and kill it with your bare teeth, now that's a sport. Scouting for food does take up two Saturdays in November. Will try to PM calendar if the function is working now. With out followers there is no leading. Boys can't follow without support of parents. Don't forget about all those Eagle required merit badge universities peppered throughout the year. Where do you think lawyer dad is going to drive his kid ? We are not like some parlor troops with a VAN We need lawyer dad on board to pull the trailer with his SUV.
