  1. I am registered as an Assistant Scoutmaster in my troop, as well as a youth member in a Venuture Crew. I was thinking about attending scoutmaster training with a friend...but I just added that in there..i guess I didnt have to say that, it was just ramble. I want to recieve Scouting Magizine because I enjoy reading that compared to a younger Boy's Life. But I did recently talk to my DE and he said I would be recieving Scouting Magizine soon since, they thought I was just a youth in a crew, and wasn't aware that I was a leader in my Troop. But what I am still interested in is the
  2. This is from the Senior Scouting Web Site: "Venturing will again be represented at the upcoming 2005 National Scout Jamboree. I again expect a big Venturing/Sea Scout exhibit of some kind, but am also hearing that there will be a Venturing subcamp! So prehaps finally Venturers can be Jamboree participants." 3. This thread was spun from another thread.Ok this is a spin off from the shoesVSsneakers but works more with the Uniform itslef, cause I liked all the replies I got... I'm gonna quote Proud Eagle from the last post: "So we have a "field uniform" that probably shouldn't be worn in the field, and we have an "activity uniform" (because of the Scout shorts or pants) that is only marginally better suited to Scouting activities. Perhaps BSA would be wise to change its uniforms to something more practical. At the least they could stop calling the uniform the "field uniform", especially since
  4. "Got the obvious facts out such as, dress in layers, no cotton, clean outfit before sleep, etc" Those are the basic components of keeping warm. Having a busy agenda that will prevent them from standing around will help their attitudes of where and what weather they are in. A lot of times in the Cold even if you have the right dress, a lot of it is psychological. Have them busy and moving around..just not to the point where they start sweating. The only thing that you didn't mention is besides just layers, wool is my best friend when camping in the snow and cold weather. When it
  5. Very interesting to know that information. If only the press wasn't so anti-Bush, the American public could know the truth...
  6. Thats my question also. Those are very common terms used in my Troop.
  7. That is true he does not have the authority to change the Uniform. But it is only worn in instances very far and few between. It adresses not necessarily the mood of the wearer but a symbol of respect maybe? For instance when the Police wear black stripes over their badges during Funerals. It's more a sign of maybe solidarity? The black neckerchief is a good idea though, I will tell him about that.
  8. I thought I would share this with all of you, and ask if you have ever heard of it before: Unfotunately, thoughout my Scouting career I have had to attend more than one funeral of a fallen Scout. We as a Troop went to the wake/viewing together. My Assistant Scoutmaster made for all of us in the Troop 1 Black Loop made of a feltlike material. We replaced it with our Red loop on our left shoulder over our Heart. It was something that at the time we all felt was a nice symbol of revrence and rememberance. Just curious if any of you have either done this or heard of this. If not eve
  9. What do you mean there is no such thing as the Class A unifom anymore...I have only been out of the youth program for a little over a year now. Those activity shirts that people talk about...I was the only scout in my troop that had one. We did however all have tee shirts with out troop # that were our activity shirt, but was still worn with the scout pants or shorts. Our Field Uniform/Dress Unifom was the Uniform the scouts in my troop wore at almost ALL times. What happend to the Class A and Class B's?? Aren't they in the newest handbook..? I could have sworn they were.
  10. Hi all...If you haven't already seen this...its funny and so true! Enjoy! Top Ten Reasons you might be a Boy Scout 10.You can say fleur-de-lis and know what one is and occasionally are wearing one 9. You have done a whipping and a lashing with no physical harm to anyone. 8. You know how to speak in a native tongue Wimachtendienk, Wingolauchsik, Whitahemui. 7. Your shoes are tied with a square knot so the bow goes across them. 6. You work on camp staff for less wages than flipping burgers at McDonalds to meet girls on p
  11. I preordered mine and recieved it last week. What a Classic movie showing a time gone by. Back to a slower paced small town life...very Norman Rockwell. I made my Girl Friend sit through it and she enjoyed it as well. And the Extras!! Shows some of Lem's boys today as adults, and they share some moments and memories from the Movie. Worth the money! Now that we have achieved getting Disney to release it...now the NEW GOAL... Bring it back to Theaters!! Back to the Big Screen! ( I can wish can't I? ) Yours in Scouting VentureScoutNY
  12. Heres one for all of you: We all know boys will be boys and sneakers for todays youth are very common. But when wearing the Scout Uniform, whether its Class A or B, (unless sporting activity) sneakers dont cut it! Especially when in Class A. How many times have you all be on a hike when a Scout shows up with sneakers??--> keep in mind the scout is at as much fault as the parent is for sending their child on a hike in sneakers. Assuming the Hike is not on a sidewalk. Are we the leaders at fault? Have we not taught these Scouts to "BE PREPARED"? I don't mean to point fingers.
  13. Thanks Bob. Those are good Questions that do relate to communications, I will strongly consider them. If I do I'll throw out a new post for the one I choose. The reason I chose this whole Discrimination topic, is that I felt it would have the most research out there for me to dive into. The other topics like the ones you stated I feel when it comes to hard info may be far and few between. I hope I'm wrong though. I would love to steer clear of all these discrimination issues though. I will consider all those questions you stated and narrow them down. One of my deciding factor
  14. An idea for a Family project is to creat a Vegitable Garden. I started a garden with my family that could be enjoyed for years after the merit badge. Unlike some projects this had soemwhat of incentive for everyone, fresh veggies! to keep a scout physically storng! Yours in Scouting VentureScoutNY
  15. Ok..this is all great info, and many thanks! I'm learning a lot from all of your replies. Today I spoke to my professor and explained that my original topic/question was incorrect on my part. So I am in the process of thinking of a new question to explore. The catch is, it has to coinside with the class "research in communications". So in his hazy explanation it must be communications releated. Which really means I just have to state my question in the correct form, and make it so this paper does not become a book report but a RESEARCH PAPER. So here I am now thinking of a new top
  16. Thanks for the reply Bob White. And the straight answers to my questions. I do accept the policies of the BSA and agree with them. I needed to choose a topic of Intrest for this research project, and no topic better suits me that Scouting. My professor pushed the Discrimination issues on me and said it would be a good thing to be aware of if I was heading into the BSA. My background on these issues is weak because I have never followed up on them...to be honest they were not pertinent to me or my scouting trail since I am NOT homosexual and DO believe in God. Hence it did not direc
  17. I have been looking through many websites both pro and con when it comes to Discrimination. But throughout all its political jargin I can not answer my questions. If your gay are u denied membership?? If you do not believe in God are u denied mempership?? And in both cases if you are a member, are you asked to leave/kicked out? I can not find this written in Stone anywhere...When I read through all these websites I feel like I'm listening to politicians...no staright answer. Lost..
  18. I think I have found what I need to figure this all out at : Very interesting stuff here, if anyone wants to take a look. http://www.bsa-discrimination.org/index.html Very interesting stuff here, if anyone wants to take a look.
  19. Your right. I do need to do research. I'm asking around for resources for doing this research. Where do I look? I have been combing the campus library and have found little on all of this becuase it was a recent case. I need a source that says the policy's etc...
  20. Thanks Beaver for putting that into perspective. I never thought about the costs involved. I was thinking more around the lines of younger scouts having the chance to know more about scouting as a whole, and that it is a big thing.
  21. Thanks for the tip on the Magizine DS. I will look into that today. I'm surprised that the Jamboree is just a Boy Scout event. I would think it would be great to see all branches of Scouting represented. I have always loved reading up about Sea Scouts. In years past I thought that all branches did attend, like the Air Exploreres of the fifties etc.. Maybe if it were open for some cubs, they would be able to see a much bigger world of scouting than what they normally see at pack nights. As we all know Scouting is a huge Movement..i Feel like it doen't get the positive Publicity it de
  22. Thats kind of disapointing to hear. When I inherited the Jacket the back was covered neatly with vintage patches. So through my years in Scouting I added my own. It's too bad thats against the rules. We all know those scouts that are wrapped up in patches and love them over everything...some times a little to much. ( For example years back a father asked where he could get one of those "sashes with the red arrow for his son" the OA Rep almost choked ) Well I was never all about my patches but I enjoyed collecting them for personal reasons. But if they cannot go on the Jacket where
  23. I had a feeling that I would have to change the questions. If scouts themselves were not banned, it was leaders than..is that correct? And that Dave guy I believe his name was...His Eagle Award was taken away from him after crossing from youth to adult. He is the one that got a lot of publicity during the court case. Any thoughts..
  24. True..the hat does not have much use..but it looks great..much more official than the ball caps in my opinion. but I do understand the point that it has no use. and when i wear it out in the sun i always get the V tan!!
  25. Ok..first off. I was at the 2005 Jamboree website, and the attendance requirements include: "Boy Scouts and Varsity Scouts must be at least First Class Scouts. They must have completed the sixth grade or be at least 12 years of age by July 1, 2005, but not have reached their 18th birthday by August 3, 2005." What about Venture Scouts?? I am a Venture Scout age 19, and hopefully will attend Scoutmaster training soon for my troop but not sure since I'm away at school. Anyway just wondering... My other question: I want to recieve Scouting Magizine but can find a place on
