2005 National Scout Jamboree Scouter Network Meet And Greet
SR540Beaver replied to Eamonn's topic in Camping & High Adventure
I'll see you there. Who is bringing the gorp and who is bringing the bug juice? -
I find that I seldom have a need to tie knots in "real" life. That doesn't keep me from sitting with my knot book and tying knots frequently while watching TV. My favorite is the butterfly. I don't know why, I just like tying it. I saw something proved the other day. Don't use it and you lose it. My son has a keen memory and gets out a rope and ties knots periodically. He is a PL and he put a knot tying relay on the agenda as their game for last week's meeting. There were seven stations set up with a rope and placard at each station. The boys had 15 seconds at each station. They had previously "learned" all of these knots. Out of 8 boys, 2 got one knot each correct and my son got six correct. He actually got the seventh correct too, he just took longer than 15 second to complete it. Don't use it, you lose it. With todays tents and EZ-ups in place of dining flys, the boys seldom have any practical use for knots.

Changes To The National Web Site.
SR540Beaver replied to Eamonn's topic in Open Discussion - Program
FOG: "More than likely they are paid talent and have signed all the appropriate release forms." Why would BSA waste money on paid models when they have a HUGE pool of models that would likely pose for free? If they are paid models and not members of BSA isn't it a violation of BSA policy for them to wear the BSA uniform? Probably because they wouldn't be able to scrape up one complete uniform between all the scouts at any given troop meeting across the country. -
Changes To The National Web Site.

Eamonn, I thought you were off your rocker. I had been on the national site quite a bit last night and found myself wondering just how long it had been since you had been to national. Then I pulled it up a few minutes ago and....what do you know, it has changed. You my friend, get a clean bill of mental health! -
How did YOU come to be involved in the BSA?
SR540Beaver replied to dsteele's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I went thru Cubs and dropped out as a Webelos. As an adult, I got involved because my son wanted to go to a School Night and decided he wanted to join Cubs. He is now a Boy Scout. Where he goes, Dad seems to follow. -
No one is arguing over whether they can wear "a" campaign hat or not. The question is whether they can or should adopt a uniform part from a BSA program other than their own. Would you put a Boy Scout in a blue Cub shirt? Would you put a Cub in olive pants? Would you put Boy Scout in Venture gray pants? The Boy Scout uniform is the Boy Scout uniform. Wear a campaign hat by all means, just not the official Boy Scout campaign hat. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I can't imagine a bunch of kids wanting to wear it on a regular basis. If it were me, I'd opt for a straw version over the felt to help beat the heat. Plus, a straw version would look better with the dark green shirt than the official BSA hat.
-
Just for clarification. No one is saying that Venturers can not wear a campaign hat. I think what is being said is that they shouldn't wear the official Boy Scout campaign hat since it is a part of the Boy Scout uniform and reserved for that program within BSA. If they want to go down to the surplus store and buy a hat, no problem.

Tattoo "parlors" are illegal in Oklahoma. I was thinking we were the only state. Evidently not. It does not seem to keep people from getting them though. I remember about 5 years ago going to the state fair and almost every 20 something person I saw was sporting some sort of tattoo. Even yuppie looking couples pushing their baby in a stroller had them. I couldn't help but chuckle to myself while thinking how regrettful they will be in another 10 years that they have them plastered all over their arms and legs. Bodies tend to start expanding in their 30's and 40's and those cool tatts are going to spread a little thin!

By the way....if you get the weight just right, you can chuck a Cub a good quarter mile.
-
Punkin "flinging"? I've heard of punkin chucking, but not flinging.

About 3,000 to 4,000 cubic inches of stuff.

Eamonn, Dye your hair blue and go back to Cub Scouts!

Adult supervision on Webelos Campout
SR540Beaver replied to ASM59's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Twocub, Your rguess is as good as mine. Tiger Cub parents are "partners". But it isn't open to Tigers. Perhaps they mean a parent who is a registered BSA leader wit ha Troop, Venture Crew, at large, etc., but not with their son's Pack. Beat's me. -
Eamonn, If you have the BSA Official Retail Catalog, there is an Awards and Gifts section in it. They have a variety of "thanks" type awards. One is a gold plated brass pin that says "Volunteer, the gift of time" on it. It is only $4.80. There is a paperweight that spells out the words thank you with a BSA emblem set in it. There are Norman Rockwell foil certificates that can be customized on your PC's printer. There are several "outstanding service" plaques with Rockwell prints and engraveable plates. There are other appropriate awards listed in the catalog, but you get the idea. Our scout shop has some of these available in stock.

Eamonn, Our Council uses the same campground for the Webelos Resident camp and Cubs Resident camp. They are held on seperate dates from one another. The Council also holds Cub Day Camp at another campground. I'm not sure how many they get to sign up for Cub Resident. I'm making an assumption, but since Cub Resident requires a parent to attend, that means vacation time for the parent involved. Most parents send their sons off to Boy Scout camp by themselves. Cub Day Camp only needs an adult to transport kids back and forth each day. I doubt that Cub Resident will ever grow very large since it requires parents to attend overnight during the week and since it has competition from the Day Camp.

Adult supervision on Webelos Campout
SR540Beaver replied to ASM59's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Twocub, Here is what the council's webpage for Resident camp says: Due to insurance coverage, CGT Cub Scout and Webelos Scout Resident Camp sessions are camp sessions for Cub and Webelos Scouts, registered parents and registered Leaders only. Program and materials cannot be provided for brothers and sisters nor may unregistered adults attend. Please do not bring an extra person to Camp. This rule applies to all ages. -
Adult supervision on Webelos Campout
SR540Beaver replied to ASM59's topic in Open Discussion - Program
This is kind of off topic, but related. I don't know if this is a national policy; but in our council, the only adults allowed at Webelos Resident camp are registered leaders. -
A lurker is someone who just reads the posts, but does not participate in the forums. Keep in mind that the forums are just one small piece of the overall website. I'd venture a guess that a good number of the people who come here are looking for information on other pages and may never wonder into the forums.

Tenderfoot Requirement #10 Exercises
SR540Beaver replied to kthoman's topic in Advancement Resources
If I recall, the requirement says to show improvement 30 days later. Period. -
foto, You are correct. If national and council receive no funds, they cease to exist. Guess where that leaves our units?

If you went to a page that had a "hit counter" on it and it said 5; if you opened another window to that site, it would say 6. What you are seeing is a snapshot of the number of users at the time you connect. It won't increment in the old window.

scoutingagain, I would assume that when your Scouts go camping, they use those mechanized contraptions to get from point A to point B don't they?
-
scoutldr, Just curious, do you think Halliburton also does popcorn?

I can't remember.....is that better than being the Bee's Knees?
