  1. I would wager this is entirely the case. At National the mentality is how many boxes can we push out of the factory door.... not the quality of what's in the box, or even if anything is in the box at all. So once again, boys lose.
  2. that's a great idea too! The only flaw, at least in our Pack, is the disparate number of boys in each den. Nothing that can't be solved with the Pack grabbing one or two extras. I really like that idea!
  3. I really would love to implement just the Yellow and Blue necker for all cubs in our Pack (Tiger through Bear, Webelos get the plaid ones).... and I'm one of the strict ones on uniforming. But having to shell out $25 each year just in uniform gear.... not even including the belt buckle... it's absurd. Are any other units doing this?
  4. So I just got a response from DE who consulted with the camping dept.... and the Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award is officially a pay to play award and the only way it's possible to earn it is to shell out over $300 for their provided Day Camps, or $50 for one of the 4 twilight camps (which is only for Lions and Tigers) they run all year. Awards and advancement are not "the reason to do Cub Scouting" but when you have camps that fit the bill to a tee, and they're affordable.... I'm perplexed by this. Will be contacting the "camping department" next.
  5. there's a recognition patch now? I'm happy I got mine done 2 months ago. I should still be good for another 2 years.
  6. my thoughts and prayers are with the boy, his family, TT and the troop. Horrible news.
  7. let's beat this horse until it's bones turn to chalk dust.... The Boy Scouts serves the needs of boys, boys who have been left behind over the last 20 years... languishing in academics, with lower college graduation rates, higher high school drop out rates, higher rates of incarceration... and a general societal penalization for being boys. (more aggressive, more competitive, more rambunctious, more noisy, etc...). Leave Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts alone. There are plenty of programs out there for those looking for options. It seems BP's quote is as relevant now as it was when he said i
  8. Maybe it's just in my circle, but most non-scouters I've dealt with have no idea that Boy Scouts shoot rifles. Then again, I'm on the east coast, so it's a different mind set. Either way, I'm hard pressed to believe a scout or scouter did this.
  9. I certainly could be wrong, but I imagine the headline is inaccurately attributed as I doubt this was an inside job. Had it been an inside job, they would have known those firearms are all but useless on the open market. I'd wager a friend of a friend of a friend heard about rifles being used at the camp and ransacked the storage room. I hope they catch them.
  10. This is my understanding as well. You do not need BALOO if you're taking day trips.
  11. I'm inclined to agree with you.
  12. Nope, I checked that too. Day Camp according to BSA is considered to run from one to five days. So even then, it could fall into that category. I think the distinction between family camp vs day camp/resident camp in this particular instance is splitting hairs so thin it's microscopic. A poor reason to deny kids an award that would hardly be considered "given away" in any other light.
  13. District Exec told me it didn't count. I'd love to get a letter from National, or perhaps try Council level first. I feel like these kids are doing the camping, getting outdoors... doing everything the point of the award is seeking to achieve and then being denied the award on some kind of poorly worded technicality. Thanks for the insight, I'll see if I can push it up the chain.
  14. Question concerning this award. Requirement 1 states cubs need to either attend Day Camp, or Resident Camp. Resident camp is defined as any council run themed camp that ranges from 2 to 5 days. We have a Cubelos camp that is 3 days 2 nights, it's run by the district, is themed and structured. It boggles my mind that this does not count towards this award. The Day camp that the council runs over the summer is out of the price range most of these kids can swing, but they've hit just about every Camp out otherwise. Seems to me the spirit of the law and the letter of the law
  15. There is nothing remotely "far-right" about "Workers Party of Social Justice". I hope her, her family and her troop all remain safe, she's a brave soul.
  16. Mods, could you lock this? I will recreate in the Fund raiser forum, thanks.
  17. I'm looking for more dynamic / fun ways to raise money instead of droning on about "please give us money" or "please buy popcorn" (not that there isn't a time and place for those things as well). There's a local bowling alley that stages fundraising events for various orgs, and I was interested in leveraging them to have a Pack Bowl-A-Thon to generate some extra funds for the Pack. Has anyone organized and run one? Any tips you could provide? Thanks in advance!
  18. Wal-Mart currently had Faded Glory cargo shorts in OD green that are a pretty good supplement for scout shorts, only $16.95
  19. Hi all, Just tried again to upload a photo with no luck. I assume there is still no word on resolution from the provider. Just wanted to check in. thanks.
  20. you wouldn't be the first. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-3356084/I-ve-gone-child-Husband-father-seven-52-leaves-wife-kids-live-transgender-SIX-YEAR-OLD-girl-named-Stefonknee.html
  21. Our council just made it official to us this week.
  22. meh, basic wood working is a skill that shouldn't be given up on. I'll take the Pinewood Derby over this.
