  1. I hope to play on my son's attitude of "I'll show them". Since we know there is another uniform inspection this week, I'm going to try to convince him to put on his uniform and go show them how it's done. He even has the uniform pants and likes to wear them. I'm trying not to just say "get over it" even though he needs to "get over it". When I was kid I had short hair (back when boys had long hair) and wore pants/jeans a lot. I can't tell you how many times before puberty I was called a boy, which was very upsetting. Both adults and kids did this to me. So, I know he is hurting inside an
  2. But they seem to think boys come in 1 of 2 widths. "Average" and "slightly larger". My son is SLIM. The elastic in the waist helps. The length is ridiculous. I do sew, but never have the courage to cut the pants before hemming, so my son has the thickest hems around, since those size 8's are way too long.
  3. People see Webelos graduation as an END. Boy Scouts is not seen as a continuation of scouting. I have seen this 3 years in a row. Just got off the phone with this year's Webelos II den leader and one remark he made was "I don't know if many of my boys will be active in Boy Scouts. They have sports and such." This is the THIRD year I've heard that from parents or leaders. "Well we did the Cub Scout thing, enough of that." Webelos graduation give everyone a nice tidy time to get out and still feel they "completed" scouting.
  4. Found out my son's problem about the troop. When the SM introduced us to one of the ASM's, the ASM said "What pack are you from?", implying my son is a Webelos. My son was very upset that the man would "judge" him by his size and think he was a Cub Scout. I am trying to explain that they are not used to Boy Scouts visiting and it is the time of year for Webelos to make troop visits. I know it stung him hard. He is very small, about the size of a 3rd grader. Not only that, he isn't but a couple of months older than most 5th graders, so he could easily still be a Webelos. But logic doesn't
  5. Rooster, I thought that's what you meant about men influencing the sheep, but wanted to be clear. You are right it could be chemicals, inbreeding, or any number of things. One study does not make something a new "law". I understand that you say you don't have rigid ceremonies in your denomination. My point is that ritual doesn't just mean something that is dictated to you nor does it mean you must do it to be saved. It can also mean something we do over and over. I also understand that in Old Testament times many of the rituals were laws and were "required" to get closer to God. Also, s
  6. Rooster writes that his denomination does not have rituals. Rooster, you sure about that? I agree you may not have ritualistic laws, but I bet you still have rituals. Rituals include grace before meals, the way worship service is conducted, and communion. The word "ritual" is not a bad word. Even saying the Pledge of Allegiance at a Scout meeting is a ritual. Rooster, could you explain how men influenced the sheep's behavior?
  7. ASM1, The SPL was not there. Also, from what I understood, the SPL, like all the other scouts, have never seen a uniform inspection. The boys who were in other troops before this did not learn a lot about boy-led. I thing I had to laugh at was when finally one of the adults pointed out "guys, you DON'T have to ask me if you need to go to the restroom. Get up and go!" They are so "well trained" at school to ask permission before doing anything.
  8. After whining and complaining on this board, someone who knew we were in the same district contacted me privately. Just so happens we had briefly met at some training a couple of months ago. Once I knew where his troop meets, I knew it was withing driving range of my house. My son and I visited this week. After about 5 minutes, my son went into "brain lock" or "meltdown". Not sure what happened, I think it was the uniform inspection. He and I haven't talked about it since then. We will this weekend. Anyway, I liked what I saw. The SM and I talked for about an hour on the phone last
  9. Eagle74's ideas of movies would work well with adults too! Stories (movies) are always a good way to get a point across.
  10. Was in a bit of a bad mood going to my den meeting last night. We had a police office come visit. Seeing the boys full of questions and so excited to see the police car helped. Then when when a few ran off saying "I'm going to be a police officer when I grow up." that really warmed my heart to see that they had some interest in this and a positive role model in this officer and the others in our area. The 4 boys and one little brother all climbed in the back seat of the police car. They wanted to police officer to drive them to the store. LOL We told them we NEVER want to see them in th
  11. NJ, My Cub Scout Leader book that I bought a few months ago (copyright 2001) says only Cub Scout and Webelos. No mention of Tigers on that same page. Yikes, not sure if I want some of the parents with a knife much less the kids!
  12. "that based on a decades old relationship with the Girl Scout organization " What relationship? I thought both groups made it very clear that they were not associated with each other. I have also read on more than one occasion that Campfire Girls used to be considered the "sister" organization to Boy Scouts.
  13. This is from http://www.faqs.org/faqs/scouting/rec.scouting.issues/section-27.html Written Jan 2, 2002 Note the following while reading the DRP: The DRP does not require nor forbid a belief in a Supreme Being. The DRP does not talk about being a 1st class or 2nd class citizen, it talks about the quality of citizenship a member can obtain. The BSA does not define what constitutes belief in God or the practice of religion.*
  14. BSA DECLARATION OF RELIGIOUS PRINCIPLE Excerpted: from Adult Registration Application B.S.A. No. 28-501K. The Boy Scouts of America maintains that no member can grow into the best kind of citizen without recognizing an obligation to God and, therefore, recognizes the religious element in the training of the member, but is absolutely non-sectarian in its attitude toward that religious training. The Boy Scouts of America's policy is that the home and the organization or group with which the member is connected shall give definite attention to religious life. Only persons willing
  15. "Personally, I'd say that an atheist kid, or a child of atheist parents, needs just about everything else Scouting has to offer a LOT MORE than a kid whose upbringing has included mainstream religious instruction, and that rather than denying these kids, Scouts should reach out to those who dwell, if you will, in the inner city of the soul... " Mr. Lambert is not a child. He signed an adult volunteer form.
  16. Veggie burgers! Have the boys look for veggie recipes online or in cookbooks. As others have said, you first have to find out what type of vegetarians they are.
  17. I don't have the adult application with me but I looked at it when I filled out new one recently for a new position. It seemed pretty clear about agreeing to the BSA religious principles and the part about being a best citizen requires a belief in a higher power. Anyone got the app handy and can quote it?
  18. The thread about the atheist scout volunteer was started about 72 hours ago. We are now at 184 replies and it has been read over 1400 times. Wow, I think we've got some new record going on this one! Also, there seems to be no or little fighting with the "regulars". Some of us may disagree on what is a "religion" and what is "moral" but most of us agree on this.
  19. I did not choose the color of my skin or my gender. Except in some rare cases, none of us made those choices. We do choose our beliefs. Meryln, you choose to be an atheist. My sister has choosen to be a pagan (recognizing a goddess instead of God). I have choosen to be a Christian. And I do mean that I CHOOSE it, after years of searching and learning. The original article is about an adult, not a child. He is 19, he is an adult. He has made his choice. He knew the consequences. I usually don't "bash the liberal press" but has anyone else noticed how all the headlines read "Scout be
  20. "The government isn't a private group; using your logic, the government could run a "no Jews" or "whites only" group using the same technique. " Then the govt. shouldn't sponsor the units. I think most units will find a sponsor.
  21. Merlyn, Do you spend this much time telling churches to quit discriminating against atheists? In my mind, the government "supports" churches because my donations to the church are tax deductible. Yet, an to join a church you must profess a belief in God, for a Christian church you profess a belief in Jesus as savior and to follow the rules of the church. Acco40, very well said about throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Yet, I don't think the BSA policy on atheists will change in my lifetime (and I plan on living a long time). I have to agree that belief in a higher power is a m
  22. "Uh, no. There's a difference between a lack of Jews due to no Jews living in the area, and refusing membership to Jews. And I doubt there were no atheists; you just didn't know. " Uh, wrong. Private school, not a church based one, but we said prayer every day and for every occasion. If a Jewish family showed up to apply, they would have been turned away. Same with blacks. We discriminated and were proud of it. "Of course, with your attitude, you can defend membership in the KKK equally well. " Yes, people can be a member of the KKK if they want. I don't believe in ANYTHIN
  23. "Would you join an organization that admitted all boys except Jews?" Grew up in such an organization, went to school with no Jews, no atheists, no blacks. "How bigoted can the leadership of an organization become before you would consider leaving?" Well, let's see first I have to leave my family because my father is the biggest bigot I know. Then I have to leave my job because of the bigotry of some of the good ol' boys at from top to bottom. I have to take my child out of public school because some of the top dogs are bigots (they are subtle but still are bigots). I have to q
  24. Merlyn writes: "And didn't you question how Schmidt got to be a high-ranking BSA official with such an opinion? Do you think the response would have been the same if he had said it about Jews or blacks or Catholics? Could it be that having a bigoted opinion against atheists is no impediment to being a high-ranking BSA official? And why is that? Why is it OK to foment hatred of an entire group of people due to their religious opinions, as long as it's the "wrong" religious opinions? " I am not surprised at the opinions of any one anymore, diappointed maybe but not surprised. Let's a
  25. The Campfire Law: Worship God Seek Beauty Give Service Pursue Knowledge Be Trustworthy Hold onto Health Glorify Work Be Happy They aren't forced to say it, but if it is said by the majority at every meeting aren't we at the same place of saying the Pledge of Allegiance with "under God"? here is a link to the Bay Area Campfire Council www.campfireusabayarea.org (This message has been edited by sctmom)
