  1. My first red flag would have been when they said "that will be $7 please". "For a LEMONADE????"
  2. First of all, I would decide what it is that I'm interested in doing. Otherwise, if you just show up and say "use me", you will get all the jobs that no one else wants :-( Some of the functions of the District are Program (Camporees, etc), Finance (that's one that no one wants!), Training, Camping Promotion, Membership (another tough one), Advancement, and Unit Service (Commissioners). Just about every District can use more Unit Commissioners. If you have specific expertise, or passion for any one area, start there. If you are an OA member, you might also consider becoming an adult advisor to the Chapter or Lodge.
  3. One thing...in our District, Cub RT and Scout RT are two separate meetings, held in different locations on the same night. It's impossible to attend both, although our DE tries. The purposes are very different, and, as John says, it's a training event (if done right), not just an info download from the DE. I have to side with Bob White on this one. A unit only has one CC, and it sounds like yours is not willing to step aside and doesn't want your help. You can only do what you can do, so stay in your lane. I have been a DL, a CM (for 5 years), an SM and a CC for a troop. They are each full time jobs and I would never try to do more than one at a time.
  4. Two of my better qualities are healthy paranoia and prudence. Being a reasonably intelligent man, I don't rely on others to bail me out, should the worst happen. Especially, the suits in Irving! On the advice of my financial advisor, I took out a $2 million umbrella liability policy (less than $400 per year), which required that I also increase my automobile limits. I am constantly amazed at how judges rule, when in my non-legal brain it's a no-brainer. Be prepared!
  5. I read this when you first posted it and decided to withold comment to see what the others said. Their answers were predictable. I am torn between, "notify the DC" and "MYOB", since you are not assigned to that unit. If the Council wants to know what's going on, then they need to get some more Commissioners on board. I might also suggest to the DC that a "refresher" on prohibited activities might be a good idea for Roundtable and/or the Council newsletter. Of course in my experience, the worst offenders won't be there to get the information anyway.
  6. Welcome to the forums, BMaxwell. And congratulations on becoming a "recovering" helicopter Mom! Trust me, your son will be better off for it. Sounds like your new SM is on track and your son is on his way. One of Baden-Powell's often repeated quotes is "Never do anything for a boy that he can do for himself", (or words to that effect). My own sons will be 30 and 26 this year, and that's how I tried to raise them. Neither one made Eagle (it was their decision, not mine to make), but they are both very successful adults. That's all one can hope for. An essential part of growing up is to learn to make decisions for one's self and to be accountable for the results. Good luck, and I hope to see you here often!

    New Uniform?

What's the point in having a "uniform" if everyone's going to wear something different? Kinda defests the whole purpose of the "uniform" method, eh?
  8. Everyone must be in a seat with a seatbelt on. http://www.scouting.org/HealthandSafety/GSS/toc.aspx
  9. If a man does something and there's no woman around, is he still wrong? (sorry) Having been married for 33 years this June, I have gotten used to the idea that I will be wrong most of the time, usually about things that don't matter either way. As far as this forum goes, I have tried to always address the question, not the people. I try to refrain from one-to-one arguments that only serve to bore the other 9,999 other people watching. If you want to argue on a personal level, take it to the PM venue. Of course, that's been said before, and it doesn't help. I, for one, have enjoyed what Gunny has added to the discussions, and have never seen anything wrong with his decorum. Semper Fi!
  10. I agree with jr56. In this case, the award is presented to the SM being honored...posthumously. Is his spouse or other family members still around? Mount the award in a nice frame and present it to the next-of-kin.
  11. Thanks, Bob. You saved me the trouble of researching Beavah's question, which I think was tongue in cheek anyway. I am not an attorney, but in my profession, we read and interpret legalese every day. I apply the "duck test" and the "reasonable man" theory. It has served me well.
  12. In my council (er, I mean the "Council to which I donate tons of money and hours"), it is forbidden for scouts to raise funds for other organizations...ESPECIALLY while wearing the uniform.
  13. Be a role model of physical fitness AND have WB21??? Well that narrows it down to about 3 people in my council.
  14. Would you have time to squeeze in some waterfront first aid and safety? Sun protection, hydration, common waterfront injuries, such as cut feet, basic intro to CPR, etc. Buddy system? Intro to Safe Swim Defense?
  15. It sounds like Lisa's dilemma is that all the adults are equally qualified, and they just can't decide. I would suggest drawing a name out of a hat, rather than add unit-level requirements to the OA criteria.
  16. Again, all we're spouting here is personal opinion and laymens' interpretations which aren't worth a bucket of warm spit. I have seen nothing that convinces me that any one opinion is any more valid than another, much less a chapter and verse reference. All of the Eagle projects I've been involved in have been "Troop Events", and I would expect all BSA policies and insurance to apply. But people (and insurance companies) are surprised by Judges' decisions every day. If, however, the Scout executes the project on his own, without the assistance of other BSA members, that's a different situation. And I agree with Eamonn...I ain't losing sleep over any of this. Some people just enjoy arguing.
  17. Barry, your minister is quoting Curly from the movie "City Slickers."... The only inappropriate question I ever heard in an EBOR was when the Troop CC asked the Scout, "Tell us about your sex life."
  18. Only one or two of us here are practicing attorneys. I think we should leave the legal liability and insurance questions up to to them. As to uniforms, I think the attire worn should be suitable to the environment and the work to be done. I find such gratification in the fact that the Eagle candidate has reached the point of actually executing his plan, and his troop-mates, friends, and family are giving up their time to support him, I would never, never criticise his uniform, or lack thereof.
  19. There are 2 kinds of scout shops...National-run and council-run. Ours is council-run and they are selling Switchbacks 2 pair for $45, while supplies last.
  20. His parents should have also given him the "Be polite to adults" lecture. Or better yet, the "don't talk to strangers" lecture. If I were the "kid", I would have responded, "Yes, sir, I sure do like hot sauce!" Different times.
  21. Ed is correct...dual registrations are common, and only require one registration fee. The boy scout should be encouraged to become a Den Chief if he still wants to be active with the Pack. That being said, the only camping the Pack should be doing is "Family Camping", so the entire family should be welcomed to participate...and pay their fair share of the expenses either with cash, or through fund raising.
  22. For the first time in 20 some years, I will NOT be going to summer camp!
