  1. If the troop committee gave it a "thumbs down", I think you're done. The first step is getting the plan approved by the SM and troop committee.
  2. This sounds more like a good project for Safety MB, requirement #6. Not an Eagle Leadership project.
  3. A year ago, our UC suggested we set a goal of sending our SPL to NYLT. What we didn't do was ask the SPL. Unfortunately, the scout who got elected wasn't interested (too much time and money), so the troop will not qualify. Oh well. Rule #1...don't set goals for things that you don't control.
  4. Call me paranoid...Romania? Could be harmless...or it could be a phishing site for off-shore pedophiles, immune from US law. Sorry...I would have to say no.
  5. I don't think it's a matter of tearing down each others' religions (I prefer to say "denominations"). I agree, captainiron, there are flaws in all of them, and every religious person I know treats his religion like a cafeteria menu...support the things you like and ignore the things you don't like or are too hard. I know a Jew who observes every holy day, yet will eat 5 pounds of shrimp in one sitting...his excuse "what the rabbi doesn't see won't hurt him". I have Catholic friends who use birth control and commit adultery. I once worked for a born-again Southern Baptist who was a deacon in the church...but hated blacks with a passion (used the N-word at every opportunity). I could go on and on...It's not up to me to judge them...God will do that and one day we will all find out what the "one true religion" is...I suspect it won't be any of them and God is up there laughing his butt off at us fools and the money we are pouring into the churches' coffers. What we are doing (at least me) here is to try to understand the LDS doctrine, especially since we may be choosing one to lead our country. I think that's worthy of discourse. There used to be some Mormon posters here, and with all the LDS scouters out there, surely someone could chime in and give us the straight poop. Then we can make our own decisions on election day.
  6. A nurse, EMT, LNP, or PA cannot practice beyond the scope of their license, which in most states, requires the supervision of an MD or DO. They can provide first aid, but we all can do that. They can administer meds, but only with a physician's order. Recognizing when a situation is beyond "first aid", is a professional judgement. In this case, it didn't appear to be a life threatening emergency, so I would have called a parent and said "this is what's going on, what do you want to do?"
  7. We completed this in four consecutive district meetings. It's also been incorporated into University of Scouting. It is led by your District Chairman, District Commissioner, or DE. From another council's website: The workshop is specific for registered district committee members, designed to enhance the knowledge and understanding of the position you serve on the district committee. The discussion and interaction with Scouters serving in the same positions in other districts will strengthen the learning process. The overall objectives of the workshop are designed to: Define the four functions of District Operations, list the positions of the district, as well as define how these positions carry out the four functions. Identify and emphasize the importance of each participant and the role served on the committee Identify the major tasks of each district committee and position, identifying ways each task can be accomplished Improve communication and cooperation between the key positions within the council Discuss and establish the 2008 Centennial Quality District goals
  8. If I recall correctly, Richard Nixon was a Quaker. And Dwight Eisenhower was raised a Jehovah's Witness by his mother, a former Mennonite, but abandoned that in adulthood when he joined the Army. After his inauguration, he converted to Presyterianism. (I'm a distant cousin...a Pennsylvania German Lutheran). There is a local radio preacher who espouses that there is no Biblical basis for religious denominations. They are a creation of men, for their own purposes, and it's unnecessary. All you need to know is written in God's word, according to him. We don't need it filtered and interpreted by prophets, Popes, Bishops, and self-proclaimed Reverends. I think there's a lot of sense in that. I am going to miss my steamed shrimp, though.
  9. Stranger things have happened, Beav. I hope the BSA countersues for trademark infringement. I have been regularly challenging sellers on eBay when I see obvious infringement. I send the seller an e-mail asking if they are licensed by BSA to be selling trademarked items. Only one said yes, and I notice the same items (challenge coins) are now on the Scoutstuff website, so I guess he's legit.
  10. One of my scout's dad died last year from a very aggressive pancreatic cancer. We watched a handsome hulk of a man dwindle down to nothing within six months. His pain was unrelenting. When he passed, the family asked us to attend the Mass as a troop in uniform, which we of course did. During his illness, we did our best to assure that the scout had a place to come where he could experience some sort of normalcy, even if just for an hour or two. Mom encouraged him to continue camping and summer camp, and we did have a few meltdowns, but we worked through it. Scout just made Life and is well on his way to Eagle, which I'm sure will be dedicated to Dad. I think it's important to ensure the scout is not treated differently. Your meetings and activities will be a respite for him and a chance to be a regular kid.
  11. We had a scout pass his EBOR and that's the last night we saw him. He hasn't even dropped by a meeting to pick up his award. We told him that the ECOH was to be planned by him and his family, but we would help any way we could, or we could just have a Troop COH. I guess it's too much trouble to think about. Some have said we should just mail it to him, but I'm not even inclined to spend the postage at this point.
  12. SATs are a farce, as far as I'm concerned. They don't get "easier"...but they do "recenter" the grading scale every coupla years, so that the students at the crest of the bell curve get 1000. Those who got 1200 SATs back in the 70s would score off the scale today...it ain't apples and oranges. All it does is compare your performance to those sitting for the test the same year you did, with 1000 being the mean. In my state, we have "SOL" tests (I guess because that's what you are if you don't pass them!). "Standards of Learning". When I was in 3rd grade (1963), our teacher taught us French, because she was from Canada and thought being bilingual was important. I still remember some of it. That would never happen today...no time to be creative in the classroom, because we have to pass the SOLs so that the administrators get their raise.
  13. "The council doesn't pop in to do a spot-check on your compliance with policies - be they G2SS, uniforming, or advancement." Isn't that what a Unit Commissioner should be doing? And how can a 13 year old be a member of a Sea Scout ship? I thought the ages were 14-21? (This message has been edited by scoutldr)
  14. Hops, even the non-smokers breathe on your food. I agree, handwashing is the singular most effective thing we can teach scouts. Food handling safety is an inherent part of Cooking MB...which is no longer Eagle required. Go figure.
  15. Sounds like he hasn't "finished everything"...the Scout Spirit requirement hasn't been completed. How has he completed his POR if he doesn't come to meetings?(This message has been edited by scoutldr)
  16. Our policy is "no school, no scouts"...we meet weekly on Monday except when there's a school holiday. We do not meet the Monday following a campout.
  17. It's "Noro-virus", CDC shorthand for "Norwalk-like", the virus that haunts cruise ships. When I worked in a shipyard, I got to board a cruise ship (which shall remain nameless) that came in for emergency repairs. The dirtiest, nastiest place on board was by far the galley. I will never take a cruise, or if I do, I will take my own food and drink only bottled libations.
  18. There's a lot about this story that doesn't add up. The original post stated that the units would not be rechartered. But their website still shows a schedule of regular meetings...and a "Xmas Party" next week. If they were the only adults registered, and their membership was revoked, who is holding these meetings?
  19. MRSA (methycillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus) is a product of germophobes, those of us who would be rushed off to the Dr at the first sniffle for a "penicillin shot", even though viruses do not respond to antibiotics. Doctors would be between a rock and a hard spot trying to deny patients their "treatment"...it's bad for business. In grad school (Public Health), we learned about a study that showed that a patient's satisfaction with their Doctor directly correlated to the number of prescription slips that they walked out with. MRSA is found in most of our noses...only in a few people it takes hold and causes an infection. That's why handwashing and personal hygiene is so important. Closing a school and disinfecting every surface is mainly a PR move...as soon as the kids come back in, the germ is back. The downfall of mankind will not be from terrorists or global warming. We will be wiped out by "superbugs" that we have created by our over-use of medications and "antibiotic" products. Coupled with the fact that today's kids are raised in a sterile enviroment, not getting the chance to wallow in the dirt developing antibodies to common microbes.
  20. I'm not a lawyer...so caveat emptor. I have always heard of the "reasonable man" theory. That the courts will consider, "what would a reasonable man of sound mind and body" be expected to do in a civilized society. For your consideration: a "Reasonable Scouter" is one who has taken the training for his position, has at least read the G2SS for the activity he is embarking upon, will not take unreasonable risks with his or other's lives, will follow all laws and applicable BSA policies, and will know his own physical limitations and those of the kids in his charge. Not doing so would be considered "negligent". Did I miss anything?
  21. I have an idea!!! Let's make little metal loops that they can wear on their belts...we can call them "Skill Awards"!!!
  22. Sorry for the duplicate post...I didn't notice Ohio_Scouter's entry in the other thread.
  23. NORTH COLLEGE HILL, Ohio (AP) -- Two Boy Scouts and their fathers selling Christmas trees were knocked to the ground by three men with sawed-off shotguns who took about $350, police in this Cincinnati suburb said. Both adults and one boy also were punched. "At first I thought it was just a little joke, but then, when I saw the gun, I was terrified," said John Hancock Jr., 13, of Troop 393. "And after I saw the gun this guy just punched me right here and it knocked me down," the boy said, pointing to his face. The men were last seen running down a nearby street after the robbery Monday night. "They were gutsy enough to not have masks and stupid enough to hit a kid," said police Sgt. Robert Kidd. "What kind of man hits a kid?" A business owner has offered to replace the boys' money.
  24. The standard Boy Scout pocket knife that we all know and love is still for sale on www.scoutstuff.org ...the National Supply web site. Still a bargain at $12.99.
  25. I don't think the building is for sale. That would be too easy.
