My council hold resident camp at the end of the scout/school year - just before summer . For this purpose, they will consider that years Bears to be "new" or "incoming" Webelos, and they will consider that years Tigers to be "new" or "Incoming" Wolves. It works too because depending on when a pack holds it's crossovers AND cub scout graduations...then some scouts have - by their own packs standards - gone to the next rank. That and you figure our council camp is so busy during the summer that they hold resident camp in the late spring/early summer.

Pap, If your comment was to me, yeah, she calls. She is calling me because I have the phone. But she isn't calling to check on me, she is calling to check on her "baby". That is why I carry my phone and he doesn't have one. I catch the calls in order that her can keep getting dirty and whatnot.

I guess what I meant to say is I'd draw the line as a CM in my pack and tell the responcible parent/guardian that they ( parent or scout or leader) would have to stay home . I suppose the DE, SE, or COR could override that, but I'd tell them that they (the SE, DE or COR ) would need to be there and in attendance of and tending to that person.

Wow! Great question! I'd think it would be the same as - although this may not be covered anywhere either - just like any narcotic prescription. Isn't there some sort of rulling, wether National, G2SS or at least by council ...that any substance ....even if with prescription...that alters behavior or awareness of reality ( I forget the right legal or medical term here...) would be not allowd or disqualify a person from atending? Okay, my statement is vague, but I know what I mean! Suspose I hade a prescription for a codeine pill and maybe even valium. Isn't there some sort of rule, worded in some way to say that I dusing, or under the influence of that drug, I cannot do or perform or participate in certain activities? Kinda like you can't drive or operate machinery or equipment while using or when you "could" "potentially be" under the influence or affects of that drug or substance. I could go to the dentist and have 3 wisdom teeth cut out. Maybe I am a super dedicated CM and decide I am still going to camp. So to control the pain, I take three 500/10 codiene pills a day. Then I decide to teach my scouts to swim in 10 feet of water . Studid and recklless..but it's the drugs screwing up my thining. I have no doubt that somewhere, somehow - this is covered. And I have no doubt that when I get arrested and sued, that the council will also be liable and have some explaining to do. Seeing as how marijuanna will afect anybody's preception and motors skills and whatnot, I see that this can put any and all other people in te camp at risk of harm and death. Sucks for the scout, but the greater good of the people take priority over somebody being able to camp. Now, on a side note, isn';t this for either glaucoma or extreme pain? I'd think the scout or leader in question would be either too "blind" or too much pain to even want to go to camp. But that's just my own inexperienced line of thinking.

I volunteered our last resident camp. Fridays are "on your own" as far as food, activities and what not, we worked sign in and med form collecting and that was it. They have a new volunteer PD each year, so every year is a learning experience and trial and error session. Not all the staff was there Friday as many were coming in first thing in the morning Saturday. Guess what? Saturday comes, and out of the 22 volunteers who were planning Saturday show up, only 10 did. We were short 12 staffers and didn't know or have a way of knowing until it was time to strart doing stuff. I was supposed to be one of 3 people working wood and leather craft . It was supposed to happen in 2 seperate areas. But with the shortage, I ran all 3 events under one shelter. Did I mention a computer glitch allowed people to keep registering until we had just a hair over 800 people attending a camp session designed for 250 to 300 max? Somehow, nobody dies and the PD managed to get enough food that everybody not only ate, but a bunch of us got seconds... but knowing the portions they serve, it was still less than what anybody over 65 pounds would call a single portion. Oh...and around 9am, trhe counciul SE calls and says.......( drumroll please) Camp McNeill was going to be inspected by National that weekend too. The 2 inspectors from Va should be there aroun 10 am or so. We passed with flying colors! Anyways, my point was, I can understand how things could be planned out to the t 6 months ahead of time. Every detail accounted for........ and fall apart in 2 minutes flat because of a simple glitch, and/or people who think nobody would notice if "Just one volunteer didn't show up" after committing to it.

I forgot to mention, he doesn't have a phone yet. She calls mine and when she calls me those 4 times a day, she only asks to talk to him the last time just before lights out. The rest of rthe time, I am the one saying: "Yes...yes..I did...yeah.....yesssss...okay..I always do!....yes..okaaaaay ..bye..me too..me too..I did say it..I did...okaaay - I love you too!"
-
First thing I am gonna do is admit that I am too lazy to read the link right now. When we go camping, it is my wife who calls as soon as she wakes up in the morning ( maybe around 8:30 or so) to make sure that I didn't lose my 10 year old son at camp or that aliens got him. In the afternoon...m,aybe around 2:00 she calls to make sure he didn't accidentally hike 28 miles to an airport and accidentally climb about a cargo plane to India while not paying attention to what he was doing or going. At night , just before bedtime, she wants to talk to him to make sure his head didn't fall off or that a rattlesnake didn't crawl up his butt or something that might be considered bad. Him? He rolls his eyes and says in a huffy voice: Yes mom, I am fine...yes...yes..I did...yeah.....yesssss...okay..I always do!....yes..okaaaaay moooom..bye..me too..me too..I did say it..I did...okaaay - I love you too!" At least he only talks to her that one time a day, and it's her calling her baby instead of him asking to call her. Matter of fact, It there wasn't a call for it, he'd forget to eat while at camp because he is so busy running around and getting dirty. Oooops. I mean, he's so busy participating in activities and exploring and stuff.

I agree that the dangers of zinc poisoning are slim. On a side note.....how big are these tubs? I'm picturing a #2 washtub and thinking it's gonna take an hour or two to get this water to even boil.

"The value of scouting today, as you note, does not depend on its roots in imperialism or lack thereof. " ABSOLUTELY TRUE!!!!! My last name is Fisher...which at one time generations ago was Fischer...which is of German descent. My grandfather was part German and part French. My grandmother was part English and part German. I am about as German as a box of Mac Donald's chicken nuggests. Where my ancestry began or where it is from has absolutely nothing to do ith who or what I am today, my views on life or anything I do. I am 100% AMERICAN, patriotic to the bone , and have no German or European ways of thinking short of enjoying a good ole brat cooked on a grill with mustard on it and a nice cold Coke. Now, lets assume a 3rd person's line of thinking is that all German were Nazis and were completely and deeply rooted in those beliefs. That person could write 20 books about why I am a Nazi because of a handfull of whatever reasons they want. Just because it is that person's veiwpoint and becuse that is what they think does not make it any more credible or accurate. But let's go out on a limb...suppose my great grandfather was a die hard Nazi ..that still does not mean a thing when it comes to my beliefs, my lifestyle ort anything at all about me. So were B oy Scouts Imperialists back..way back in the day? WEll, I don't care and it doesn't make a difference to me.

jtswestark, Yeah, we have become a society of being the one to dish out the most secret dirt on others. We want to be the first to point fingers by way of internet, tv and reality shows. Thing is, we have to rememebr that we are not the media, or the latest Perez Hilton wanna be. We are not Nancy Grace - whos show centers on taking polls of what people think instead of actually digging up the truth and those pesky things called facts. We are just scouters trying to guide scouts. " we got away with many more things than kids can today " And yet, we deem outselves fit to teach, guide and mentor, right? WE did all that stuff, and we still turned out being good upstanding fine citizen...for the most part. So remember what our moms used to say: "If all your friends jumped off a cliff, would you do it too? So just because others pass judgement over things we used to do ourselves...it doesn't mean we have to also. We are scouters...we should lead the way, not follow what others are doing!

Time for BSA to prohibit soccer

Thiung is, the degree of the burn is not just based on what caused the burn. It is not based on wether flammible, electrical or chemical. The degree is based on the depth of and severity of the burn. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burn "Burns can be classified by mechanism of injury, depth, extent and associated injuries and comorbidities. Third degree (full thickness) Extends through entire dermis Appearance: Stiff and white/brown Texture Dry, leathery Painless because of loss of nerve fibers (extensive peripheral pain where 2nd-degree burns lie) Requires excision Scarring, contractures, amputation -

Flammable? Well, I have had some very nasty coffee from many fast food places...so that is debateable. The coffee was just under the boiling point. The exact temp? Don't know. But written policy put it at being kept at 180 to 190 while just sitting in a pot after being brewed- but before being served. Basically, the pot that they were about to pour your coffee from - it was supposed to be that hot. -
Now, I am not saying that a unit should ignore any "undesireable" behavirs, postings or comments. And I definantly believe a scout is a scout 24 hours a day. I am just saying that nobody is perfect and the moment we start knocking down a scout beased on imprefections or less than desired behavior...then we have to do the same for us. I actually trhink these kinds of things are great teaching moments. And truth be told, I may be misunderstanding the intent of what the post is stating. I mean, my understanding is that scouting teaches and mentors youth to reach the right attitudes and behaviors. But sometimes it sounds like posters are advocating that scout either is a moralistic person or not - without allowing the journey from non to being. That make sense? Not saying your post is stating that, but sometimes people see everything as either you are a full scout or not worthy to be a scout. Nobody seems interested in actually mentoring and guiding boys to BECOME scouts. Again, not saying that you have this view Basement,. I think you actually see more diamonds in the rough than any other scouter on this site. So again, not saying that we should turn a blind eye to the stupid stuff boys do, but just saying that we all did something stupid as boys outrselves ....and yet, we think we "urned out all right" I just support giving the boys the same chance ofturned out allright" that we had.

Tigers can camp at parent son weekends, at pack campouts, and with friends and framily as much as they want. They cannot camp as a den. Ballo doesn't really cover too much in the ways of BSA camping rule, but covers planning of camping and activities trhat keep the kids from being bored to tears. The misunderstanding ( I am guesing) is that somebody took the word "overnighter" literally and thought that since it didn't say Overnighter"S" ..that it was restricted to one night.

I am not in a troop, but instead, in a pack. But since I am a human, and since I was - at one time_ a youth, I can say I am just as qualified as anyb odyt else to speak on this subject. 1) First, I'd ask every adult scouter who never ever did even the slightest stupid thing, or say something inappropriate or, even make a bad joke to please leave. Why? Because there is something wrong with you as humans in general. 2) Now the rest of you look back and think about a time as a youth when you said something, followed along ( in agreement) with everybody else in the crowd just for the sake of being cool or accepted. Think of all and any of the jokes you ever told about a certain race, mionority, culture or sex . You laughed. You hee hawed andf did whatever it took to look cool in front of your friends. Think about all the times you did not think something was funny or cool...or even when you did not understand what it was, but acted like you did just so you wouldn't be the odd man out or - God forbid - look uncool. Now, look at yourselves now. Turned out okay didn't you? Matter of fact, you turned out better than okay. Yo are now volunteerin g untold and uncounted hours and ( if like most of us) money in order to help youth become better men. My point? Boys ( girls too) will say, do and agree with alot of stupid stuff in order to be accepted and be part of the crowd. They do not always believe in it, but that's not important at the time. Acceptance amongst your peers is. 3) Some of us suffer from a serious problem, It's called puntuationally deficiency. It's amazing how leaving a single letter ot punctiation mark off, or in the wrong place will totally and completely change the meaning of what is written from what is meant. Facebook and myspace are not exactly what you'd call entirely credible either. I have to go and shut down and block apps on a weekly basis. Apps I never logged into or signed up for or even knew about. "is "X" place in bouncing balls and going to wion a million bucks." "Is hanging out at the poolside of wonderful "skankyLady Inn" hotels in Creapy Beach , USA" How about the auto ads that attached to BSA facebook pages. Single sexy ladies , and women looking for men? Really? Bet you last buck that BSA does not endorse those. And you can not be responcible for what your friends can and do say - without warning or out of character - on your page. Now, I'd definantly have a tal with the boy about realizing a bigger picture in life and how something trivial can follow him around , but not something I'd bring into a BOR or EBOR until after I volunteered the info on every single stupid thing I did as a youth for a RALBOR Responcible Adult Leader Board Of Review) that everybody else had a chance to go over and scrutinize. My pint being - again - that looking back at all the completely stupid, arrogant, and just sometimes hateful stuff I did as a ki9d, I somehow managed to still become a good leaders in BSA and have the respect of many people..most importantly the boys. Yeah, I was a dumbas* as a kid sometimes, but I managed to grow out of it. Talk with the boy, Give him some guidance and advice, but do not end his scouting. DISCLAIMER The above does not take into account any capital offenses.

We casually mention them in passing. We don't push them, but we don't blow them off either. WE tell parents that there are extra awards a scout can earn, and they are all listed at scouting.org ands most are in the books. I also tell them about all the beltloops and pins that can be earned. But I do make a point of saying that scouts and parents shouldn't go after the awards for sake of having it, but it should be used as a reminder of an accomplishment a scout has reached. I also remind den leaders when a den/ pack activity qualifies or partially qualifies a scout for a beltloop. As for Summertime activity awards, I hand them out, but do not announce them beforehand.

Oh yeah...no doubt there are thousands of frivilous lawsuits. It's just that i saw something about that particular one last week , and then you used it. Thing is, Mc Donalds policy books stated the coffee had to be at a standing temp of between 180 to 190 degrees. Basically, you have something that is between 20 and 30 degrees from boiling. But yeah, I get you point about the United States of The Offended who sue anybody for everything because nothing is our own fault and somebody else should pay out the butt for our woes! -
bnelon44, It could very well be the direct result of a mill. In the mills, once a scout has gotten signed off on a MB, why waste Eagle "getting" time going over any skill ( that was probably demonstrated by an adult instead of practiced by a scout) when there are other MB's to scratch off a list and add to the Eagle Rank Aquisition Progarm? If it is indeed a mill, and advancemnts are frivolously signed off left and right without true merit behind them...why would you expect anybody to challenge a scout to paractice, and maintain a skill - aqssuming he learned or understaood it to begin with?

Also, youi have to realize that how a Tiger covers or learns something is not going to be the same as how a Webelos learns something. Just like reading or math in school. Math is math is math. It involves the same number that always add up the same way. But the problems are more complex, involve bigger numbers and take longer to do. Same with reading. Bigger words, longer sentances, less pictures. Why? Because the mental ability of the kids in the rank. Plus, Tiger has X number of achievements to be met for rank. Wolf and Bear have 12 and 24 respectively out of more that can be done. Den leaders will combine the core values with whatever requirement they are teaching. Could be citizenship and duty to country...or LNT and honesty. Try to make every den cover te exact same thing each month and you not only crimp the dens, but might as well tell the DL that you do not truct him and that you are taking over.

Blanc, Can I attach a rider on your petition to also ban any and all insignia and awards that are attached to uniforms and hats by way of pins? In this day and age of over sanitizing, washing hands and plastic bubbles, today's youtrhy just do not have an immune system that is used to and capable of handling any and all types of germs. Imagaina Webelos scout going camping, losing the backer off one of the two pins holding his Webelos colors on his arm. The pin makes small, and at the most irritating pricks...but they are like injections of staff, strep, hanta virus, and possibly the remains of salavia of any rabid animal that passed through the area where that scout may be at! WE are facing an epidemic! Run for the hills I tell yah - but apply sanitizer first! and file your tour plan! -

mom, I get you point about what you are saying, but it's interesting because a week ago, I watched a documentary about the woman who was burnt by Micky D's coffee. I totally changed my mind about it For starters, the media went nuts and stated a bunch of half and partial truths. Turns out the woman wasn't driving, but a passenger. She admits it was her fault she spilled the coffee in her lap. Coffee was at 190 degrees per McDonalds specs for standing coffee ( after being brewed) Micky D's had over 700 complaints that year alone about tghe coffee and their representative laugfhed when asked what was going to be done. The woman recieved 3rd degree burns on her crotch area and had to have numers ares cut away and multiple skin grafts. To this day, she still has severe scarring, loss of feeling and problems walking due to muscle damage. The lawsuit of 2 million was reduced to $400,000.00 Part of the settlement was a non disclosure and barring of speaking about the settlement, but that did n ot include her kids who decided to make a documentary at their own cost for the sake of truth and principle. Yeah, I hijacked the thread and I did not mean to...but It's funny because until I saw that documentry last week, I too would have used that as my first and foremost example of a jury going flat out nuts! -
Twocub, You just reminded me of a fellow who works the Bb gun range at Camp McNeill. He LOVES his coffee.. I'm honestly not sure if I have ever seen him without his tainless mug in hand. If we were to tell him that camp ran completely out of water...I swear he'd chew dry coffee grounds or use them like snuff!
-
Yeah, I'm just in the Cub SCouts, not on the troop level, but I spun off a thread about trops. Small differences as far as this thread is concerned though. If every seconmd of any unit - wether troop, pack, crew.... is regulated to the minute....then it becoms work. It becomes school. It becomes dull. The whole point of camping ius to have a great experience - FUN! Sure, you can learn while having fun, but you still have to add some fun. On Fridays, everybody is own their own too. Matter of fact, you don't even have to show up til Saturday monring, but Fridays are the fun time! A bunch of us leaders cook up quite a variety of stuff to eat : Low country boil, hobno sandwiches, deer stew, smoked sausage and beans, chicken and pastry, etc... Matter of fact, we find out that every year - more and more parents "forget" to bring dinner for Friday nights. WE enjoy it and show how you can cook good meals in one pot on camp stoves and open fires. Again, not saying there should be no schedule or order, but more scouts have enjoyed camping since we cut back on the structure and scheduling. Cut back, not cut out.
-
My council has two camps in one..or two seperate camps that abutt each other - take your pick. Camp Bowesr Boy Scout Camp and Camp McNeill Cub Scout World. Youi go in the main entrace and the road forks. Left goes to McNeill, Right goes to Bowers. Two seperate camps within one property. The benefit is one ranger covers both and during resident camps, the Webelos scouts hike over to Bowers to participate in meals and activities. Makes them feel "bigger" like Boy SCouts and keeps McNeill from overcrowding . WEbelos even have seperate colors ceremonies morning and afternoon.
-
I think the two are directly related. If you only had one camp to serve ...say...4 councils, you would have to have more scheduled resident camps and more scheduled day camps to accomidate the number of scouts from each council who will be attending the one camp. Not every scout from every council will be able to attend the one session a camp has. You's have something like 10,000 scouts at a resident camp or day camp. Now, I like the idea of each council having more than one camp, but then you have a whole different problem: Cost For a camp to be sustainable by only hosting a smaller group of campers and less often, it means it has to charge more $$ to cover costs or maint and upkeepo and taxes, etc... Like building an entire hotel for just one room to rent. The cost of that room has to cover the cost of the whole facility, plus staff, electric, etc... The only way a council could afford to reasonably run more than one or two camps is to offer an outstanding program. Which I am sure happens alot, but that's when that outstanding program draws the attention of the scouts from other councils who decide to go to camp outstanding instead of camp so so. Then camp soso starts running in the ground due to lack of money and lack of participation. Soon, campsoso closes down, camp outstanding starts getting crowded and scouts start going to camp overthere instead.
