  1. So let me get this straight we cut all the stripes apart and all the stars from the field and then we don't burn it we present it to someone? http://www.usa-patriotism.com/reference/flag_presentation.htm Above is the protocol that the services use when presenting a flag at a deceased veteran's funeral take you clues from it rather than a flag retirement.
  2. Should the council in question with whom this troop has had reservations for some time have some responsibility in this matter. God knows they pick every other piece of paperwork to death. Maybe along the lines of you know you yahoos from east anywhere will need a National tour permit to visit our famous camp beyond the limit. A general failure to communicate. Hope all works out for the best. When all else fails have a good time and do the paperwork later. Maybe they will believe you when you say "you mean I need a tour permit to go to a BSA summer camp?" As far as online well they say this pa

  4. The other option is to invite that troop to attend some events with your larger troop. In our former troop we were invited along and went camping with several other units it does the boys good to see how other troops handle things. It can be a valuable learning experience for all concerned and allows troops to share human resources as well. The only caution is to make sure that everyone is on the same page as far as strict adherence to BSA youth protection guidelines. Sometimes lack of leaders is an excuse by an unscrupulous person to get one on one situations created.
  5. Another reason to love Florida. It does rain here usually in massive quantities for a short period of time. We even had a brief shower yesterday even though we are in a drought. Most everyone uses the infamous dept store tents even the troop has a mix of coleman and ozark trails. We all have a tarp or a cheap drop cloth that we throw over the tent for the downpours and then remove when the shower has passed. The other nice thing is that our rainy season is very warm so one is never cold and wet. The problem with extreme waterproofing is that it will get very hot and stuffy in the tent. If we w
  6. That council must have trained our council the training thing is much the same even worse is the scouts merit badges. They seem to do ranks fairly well for some reason. We must remember though that we do bear responsibility for some of this. GIGO applies if our advancement reports are illegible or worse yet not turned in having bought the MB's at the neighboring council's scout shop promising them that paperwork was turned in to our own council. This unfortunately happens a lot here in our district where the neighboring council's shop is a lot closer, nicer, better stocked and a more convenien
  7. Another lesson don't overlook the airlines. Southwest has an internet special one way from Tampa to Nashville for $49 one way. With several daily non stops. Has to be booked in advance and the special price seats run out quick. Summer camp lends itself to booking in advance.
  8. Yum BBQ though KC style sauce is not my favorite. That yellow carolina sauce is better. You have us all awaiting your report on the BBQ. Almost makes me want to dig out my smoker but alas I must head out to the camp. Training is very important but in most areas there is a need for people who are willing to be trainers. Call your district training chair and offer to help out. I got tired of sitting through trainings that were as boring as watching paint dry and put my time where my mouth was. More and more enthusiastic trainers help to get people to training.
  9. For those troop hunting might I recommend showing up at your district roundtable a time or two you will see which troops have someone there and meet district people who might be able to steer you in a direction. Some troops and crews specialize we have a troop that consists of developmentally disabled scouts and a crew that is the shooting sports team. Lots of troops are built around the exotic place they go for summer camp we have one here in Florida that goes to Nebraska every year.
  10. At least with two drivers you will get the 10 hours allowed in, there are not many who will drive 10 hours with a car full of scouts. If I were considering this trip my first act would be to map quest a route from the meeting place to the camp that would give me the exact mileage to be traveled. Our troop recently did a trip and when we map quested we were pleasantly surprised that the distance was only 490 miles eliminating the national tour permit that we had all assumed would be required BTW that was 9 hours with a stop for lunch. I still think the Vans are a better bet and they can use the
  11. I would pursue the rental option depending on where you are in Florida (nearest large airport) you can get decent prices on 12 passenger vans $421 week in my area. Rent two have 10 scouts and two adults in each that way there are two drivers who can shift out and reduce total travel time. The per person cost should run cheaper this way than paying 30 cents per mile for five passenger vehicles one adult 4 scouts and be safer in long run with two adults each vehicle to split driving.
  12. "Boys find fault with the other boy and then tell you how you should give the other one extra stuff to do" Sounds like a lot of long married couples bickering! These boys know each other all too well each complaining about in the other boy what they fear they lack. They will either grow out of it or grow up to marry their brother. Sounds just like the old all you do is sit on the couch and drink beer and watch sports song and dance.
  13. This is likely a case of sibling rivalry. The brothers bicker constantly with one another but woe be unto the person that tries to get between them. They will both turn on you. Your only hope is to simply remind them they are at a scout function and are expected to act like fellow scouts and not as brothers. I would not tent them together they probably already share quarters at home. Instead put each one of them with someone else in the troop who you think they are least likely to get along with maybe that will help them appreciate the sibling more.
  14. Have him hunt a camp ranger job or something that would work towards that. If he was a college grad he could be one of those DE's everyone complains about.
  15. The scoutmasters hardest job is dealing with the adults if the young man has the people skills to deal with upset parents etc. go for it. The SPL runs the troop if we do it right. Most scoutmasters tend to be older because it is easier for us geezers to tell an immature 30 something parent to take a chill pill and leave well enough alone.

  17. All the WB people that I know have paid their own way for wood badge. I have seen some on this forum where a unit has contributed to the individual to go. We make the scouts pay or earn their way on their camping trips. When you pay for it yourself you are more motivated to get the most out of any activity.
  18. Are we sure that this is not a boy that just crossed over with his arrow of light? Our troop has a lot of new scouts going to summer camp for the first time and just a month or two ago they were second year webelos.
  19. http://geocities.com/krdvry/historic.html when I was a WDL my den really enjoyed the historical hike we went on it was guided by the gentleman who's web page is above. He is in Florida but I am sure there are similar hikes elsewhere. This is a hike thru downtown on streets and sidewalks with the historical aspects of the buildings explained.
  20. "In Mississippi, state regulations prohibit carrying propane cylinders in the passenger compartment of vehicles, including anywhere inside a sport utility vehicle or van. Liquified propane tanks can be carried in the trunks of cars, in the beds of pickup trucks or strapped to the outside of a vehicle." The link does not work properly so I cut and pasted part here I use my truck when I get propane. The troop transports propane tanks in the troop trailer which while it is near and dear to our hearts is not irreplaceable should an unexpected accident occur. It is also not a passenger compar
  21. Propane cylinders like any fuel container should be handled with extreme caution. They should be firmly secured and not allowed to roll around. Threaded safety plugs are also available. The flammable gas they contain is also under extreme pressure. The trunk of a car is not a good place to transport one. All tanks should be inspected regularly for rust or any other sign of damage. The gas companies sell a plastic bottom that gives the tank added stability. Most troops or back yard bbqers can tell you stories of a propane tank run amuk. My favorite was the burning tank spinning on the ground li
  22. May 3 Day camping trip to Historic St. Augustine with visit to Ripley's believe it or not, fort tour and evening Ghost tour. June Summer camp week at SHSR 10-15 COH last week to award SC mb's July We take off do not meet or camp family vacations recommended. August First class and above with swimming merit badge and snorkeling patch head to the Florida Keys for 5 days of lobster hunting. Will probably do a local skills campout for the under first class as well. Have two patrols of new crossovers that probably won't make the keys trip.
  23. I am not convinced that man has anything to do with the small amount of warming there has been. NASA has seen similar warming on Mars where there is no human contribution. I do not believe that humans have the power to change the climate. The large furnace in the sky obviously has something to do with the climate. Wind rainfall and clouds also regulate climate. We are nowhere near the medieval warm temperatures as yet. I recommend that everyone check all the information and make up their own mind, with the caution that the side that is running around screaming like chicken little is usually wr
  24. I kind of like the Hiking swimming cycling choice of.l All First class scouts have passed a basic swimming test some areas of the country do not lend themselves to a lot of swimming. Here in Florida we stress swimming, snorkeling, and even scuba. Hiking in Florida is pretty boring there is not much in the way of terrain! The highest point in the state is some 300 feet above sea level. Cooking would be a good idea but the skill is less and less needed in our prepackaged society leave it as an optional one. I to would be in favor of adjusting the DRP to something along the lines of I acknowledge
  25. "Demonstrate Scout spirit by living the Scout Oath (Promise) and Scout Law in your everyday life." I read this to be exclusive of scout activities it has to do with the way the law and the oath are applied to the scouts life in school, at home, at the mall, on the job. How scout like is he when not under the eyes of the scout leaders? Maybe input should be sought from parents and teachers? Usually determined by scout and scoutmaster kind of like the fearless moral inventory promoted in twelve step groups.
