  1. “After a careful review of the program and its contents, including its mission statement, curriculum, pedagogical structure, letters of Ecclesiastical approval, and statement of mission that faithfully reflects and adheres to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church, the Troops of Saint George is hereby approved as a Catholic Apostolate of the Diocese of Fort Worth,” the Most Reverend Michael F. Olsen, Bishop of the Diocese of Fort Worth, Texas wrote in a letter, dated May 16, 2018. http://www.patheos.com/blogs/deaconsbench/2018/05/bishop-approves-alternative-to-boy-scouts-as-a-catholic-apostolate/ Looking at the Diocese website, the Bishop's decision does not appear to remove Boy Scouts as an endorsed youth program. Trail Life is not mentioned. Also there appears to be only one Troop of St. George in the Fort Worth Diocese. https://fwdioc.org/scouting Troops of St. George

Mike Rowe: Death of Boy Scouts?

...If the Boy Scouts want to attract a new generation of members, they’ll need to stand for something more than inclusion. Because being inclusive doesn’t make you relevant. If I were calling the shots, I’d take a stand against the safe space movement and everything it embodies. And I’d do it in the most public way possible. But of course, that might also require a level of risk completely inconsistent with current orthodoxy. As we all know, in 1974, a chipped tooth or a black eye didn’t lead to lawsuit, and today, I’m pretty sure a boxing ring and a trip to the shooting range would make a lot of parents…uncomfortable. But that’s exactly the point. In a world that values safety above everything else, discomfort is never welcome. Neither is risk. And yet, discomfort and risk are precisely why my time in Scouting was so valuable, and why Troop 16 was the polar opposite of a safe space. Anyway Sharon, that’s a very long way of saying that girls are not the enemy. The enemy is bad ideology, and the inability to effectively confront it. Do I favor co-ed Scouting? Hell no. I can’t think of a single good reason to put girls and boys in the same troop, the same tent, the same boxing ring, or the same game of British Bulldog. But I can think of many good reasons to include them in a unified effort to confront the siren song of “safe spaces.” Someone has to challenge the insipid belief that safety is the most important part of living. Someone has to challenge the idea that feelings trump achievement. Someone has to challenge the idea that “crying closets” on campuses designed to console stressed out students who just can’t handle their finals exams, (or the outcome of a presidential election,) will produce a responsible, productive adult. ... I recommend reading the whole article complete with colorful language. http://mikerowe.com/2018/05/otw-death-of-the-boy-scouts/

  7. The feedback I am getting from our Eagle candidates is the Eagle project is enough...only do not mention your service work on a college application as an Eagle project just let the college assume it was part of service requirement for graduation! We need to get the value of Eagle back and it is not PR stating only 4%,5%,...,%8 earn Eagle, which says what exactly? Make Eagle of unquestioned value again post high school. For example, not E-2 maybe E-3 grade , definite E-3 grade across the service branches. This would mean more physically fit and more real (solo) leadership. Colleges want to see service, let's focus on service and not STEM which schools are better suited. Maybe pre-college Eagle weeks at colleges during summer? But mostly, the BSA should be talking to college admissions and military recruiters regarding what would make Eagles more valuable to them. I remember "back in the day" when Eagle and Girl Scout Gold was a checkbox on many college applications, but today? Recover the value loss, recover the pride. My $0.02,
  8. It will be interesting to see if LDS re-purposes their existing BSA uniforms towards their new youth program. If not, imagine the economic impact to the BSA with all us thrifty scouts buying pre-owned LDS uniforms.

  11. The statue of Chaffee now proudly stands outside of the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum, where his wife hopes children can be inspired to try anything they set their minds to. He died in 1967 during a pre-launch test for the Apollo One Mission. Chaffee’s surviving wife, Martha Horn Chaffee, was brought to tears as a bronze statue of her husband was unveiled in downtown Grand Rapids. ... Chaffee is also remembered for his work with the Boy Scouts of Grand Rapids. He earned an Eagle Scout ranking in Troop No. 215, the same troop of President Gerald R. Ford. How many troops can claim their former members include a President and an astronaut, both Eagle Scouts? Nice video. http://www.woodtv.com/news/grand-rapids/roger-b-chaffee-statue-unveiled-in-gr/1188845011

    Summer Camp Staff

@bob_kins , welcome to scouter.com. Your Camp Director and Shooting Director will be your first choice, though many here will gladly help. As for specific advice for a Rifle Range Instructor, I would bring these personal safety items - shooting glasses, hearing protection (I like the Walker's electronic muffs), and lead cleaning wipes or soap (D-Lead, LeadOff) for your hands. Scouts should wash up after shooting! What kind of shooter are you? Hunter, target,..? You might get a discount from Bass Pro if you can show that your a BSA Rifle instructor. Ditto for membership with Shooting Sports USA . Safety is job one! Keep all hydrated at range. Keep it fun. Note: If you type @ followed by a member name it sends a notice to that member. These members come to mind, lets see what advice they have. @Oldscout448, @Sentinel947, @cyphertext , @ShootingSports @Eagle94-A1 My $0.02,

    Scouting firsts lost in history?

Above sign remembers Burnside, KY Troop 1, but was it the first Boy Scout Troop of Kentucky let alone the USA? Frankfort Troop 1 also formed in 1908. More info from the State Sentinel, Frankfort, KY . The CO of this Frankfort, KY Troop 1 was the YMCA and Mr. Stanley Harris was their first Scoutmaster. Here is a photo of the troop taken behind the YMCA. Scoutmaster Harris is on left in third row. But why the confusion - shoes, the court system,... The same year that Harris started the boy scouts troop, 1908, a doctor told him he had heart trouble and would die within three months. Harris did not die until 68 years later in 1976. He organized the troop to go hiking, so he could regain his strength. It was later discovered that the “heart trouble” was just bad indigestion. The State Journal Article from August 15, 1976, announced Harris’ passing. That article contains a quote where Harris recalled speaking to the doctor who told him he had three months to live. The doctor, Harris recalled, “told me to die peacefully and I told him I never did anything peacefully.” A letter written in 1940 from Harris to Todd Crutcher Jr. states that on Jan. 9, 1909, Harris received a letter from Robert Braden Powell, head of the British Boy Scout Association. The letter, which was written Dec. 29, 1908, authorized the troop. However, the Boy Scouts of America does not recognize the authority of the letter, according to the April 1976 State Journal article. It cannot be proven that the Frankfort troop was the original Boy Scout troop in America because the charter was lost. The charter was used in a civil lawsuit between the federal government and Excelsior Shoe Company, which was selling “scout shoes.” Once the lawsuit ended, the charter was filed in court records in Washington. However attempts to regain the charter were unsuccessful, according to the April 1976 State Journal article. One report said the charter was lost in a fire. ... Mike Rowe: Death of Boy Scouts?

It is not adventure unless there are surprises. In the past, our scouts have taken a game concept from Monopoly and carried a ? box or envelope on hikes. At time or distance intervals, they would take a ? card and complete the task on card - everyone do 10 pushups, form a human pyramid, switch your socks/check your feet, carry patrol leader to nearest shady spot, what do you see at 60deg True, take a pic and send it, EMERGENCY, your PL broke his leg, simple fracture, administer FIRST AID and when done draw next card (scouts busily splint leg and then draw next card... NO! THE OTHER LEG! Creating the cards themselves at PLC is a fun meeting activity. I have been trying to re-introduce this idea, but maybe it needs to be an app these days.

Variations of orienteering - find the clues, the food, canoe orienteering are popular. Our PLC was brainstorming about a night-only orienteering. During the day they would set up solar panels to charge flashlight and phone batteries, "like The Martian". Oh forgot, they would only eat potatoes.

  23. Check out the video. http://adage.com/article/cmo-strategy/girl-scouts-pushes-campaign-weeks-boy-scouts/313508/ The new effort continues a rebranding the organization started two years ago under a GIRL (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader) platform to help move awareness toward an association with leadership rather than just with cookies, explains Lynn Godrey, chief marketing and communications officer. ... Godfrey notes that her brand's campaign has been in the works since last summer and that it was not in any way a result of the Boy Scouts' push.
