  1. Works for me, thanks, will print it out and post it at next meeting. yis
  2. Try a search for the Ol Geezers Cookbook (sp) lots of great ideas there. yis
  3. on the bright side he is providing quotes from the 20th century..... meow yis
  4. Some flak may come from this.... but scouting is for the boy. Easy scouts are easy to bring along and teach the things that scouting can bring to them. But, it is the others that scouting can have a great or even the most benefit. While scouting is 'boy led' sometimes adult participation or interest in an individual scout is needed. (besides SM) I have supported and mentored scouts in the troop and have some success. Not all have been success stories but the effort must be made. Many of these scouts had no adult scout expectations and once that expectation was known the scout re
  5. Picture me facing Pennsylvania and removing my hat in gratitude and awe. Thank you, stay on that horse it fits. yis
  6. Wheeler, I thank you for raising your true 'flag'. Puts your posts into proper context. May be my parents training, military experiences or life training (read as school of hard knocks), but I do not care if a person is male, female, brown, red, black, white, green or polkadot(sp?), as long as they are good at what they do or have knowledge that is beneficial to the scouts that I am lucky to be working with. Personal opinion, Wheeler try a shorter horse. yis
  7. Happy Birthday Hops. May, 1954. Kansas City Mo yis
  8. Wheeler, welcome to the campfire. As a simple scouting volunteer I have detected, I think, a little of the apple and oranges approach in your post. Scouting does not make men out of boys, it provides tools that the scouts can use on their trail to men. In the Zulu context you put forward, the trial of white paint was the test, not the whole process. Years of training and discipline went into the young man prior to his test. Same, same with scouting. We only provide training, exposure, and experience for the scouts. Not the final test. That is up to each scout to experience in t
  9. Least favorite camping foods fall into this thread as well. I really dislike d cell flashlights for camping unless you plan to hit someone with them. Bandanas are good things, a red one for hot stuff and a blue one for your nose. Large traingular bandage size bandanas are good for head coverings and cool down wraps. yis
  10. For poles you might consider using fairly heavy gauge PVC with a 3 in bolt placed in the top end cap and a 5 in bolt placed in the bottom end cap. These proved hardy and easy to replace/ repair. yis
  11. There is a wealth of camping experience on this forum and I hope that all will post something that lets us know what has worked, what has not, and tips on how to make some items work better. Also if any have questions please ask them. Come on folks give. I like the small 2 to 5 cup aluminum percs, easy to use, clean and carry. Wide mouth lexan bottles are handier for backpacking since the wide mouth lets them be used for soup, sun tea, etc. A one and a half thick, 6 foot long walking stick made from hickory has proved usedful for years and is sturdy enough for lashing or a cross
  12. Peace, forgiveness and hopefully understanding to the family and all touched by this tragic occurance. yis
  13. MOS tribal name is Tall White Buffalo Guard. Paint station is Adult Runner. The name comes from one my height, 6'6", troops totem (white buffalo) and Guard to honor my dad. (retired 30 plus years Missouri Natl Guard). Dads tribal name Great White Buffalo Guard Brothers: White Buffalo Guard and Little White Buffalo Guard. All Bartle tribesmen and all Tribal Council. Sons Tribal names: White Buffalo Guard and Tall Buffalo Guard. Both are Runners in the tribe. Both are Geiger tribesmen.
  14. For several years the scouts have addressed me as Mr. (insert last name). In response I address them as Sir and as a group they are gentlemen or scouts, not boys or guys. Recently one of our older scouts (18 and new Eagle) came up to me and asked permission to address me by my first name. I was honored and pleased to agree. True Returns. That may sound self important but it was a turning point in how this young man and I interacted and worked with each other. Respect is a two way street.
  15. Thanks Hops for showing all of us lessons that we need to keep in mind. yis
  16. Membership in MOS is mostly dependant on age, scout rank, scouting participation and years summer camping. This ensures that the youth or adult has been exposed to MOS during the previous years as a camper and ensures that the scout has enough maturity to understand and appreciate memberships significance. MOS does not collect dues from its members. One can make "self-denial" donations or become a member of the Dog Soldier Society by making a larger one time or more than one time donation. Advancement through the paint stations after becoming warrior is a major draw for the older s
  17. Volunteer: when I did not go to the meeting. yis
  18. Congrats on the posting to SPL. Suggestions? Well.... follow the Law and support the training, teaching of the younger scouts. Work to retain the older scouts with interesting programs and information. Show pride in the wearing of the uniform, what you do will have an impact on scouts for years to come. Several of our SPLs have done yeoman work and when the younger scouts of their time come up for BOR they mention the input of the SPL of their youth. Basic scout skills is always good, camping, cooking, high adventure, knots, (sorry had to put that in), survival skills, etc. You
  19. You hear about a pond full of geese that take off suddenly and wonder if they left feathers behind that you can use for costuming. You haunt antique stores for small coffee percolators that would be just perfect for backpacking. You go to an auction looking for camping gear and good deals on cast iron skillets and dutch ovens. You collect books on knots so you learn and teach more knots to scouts. You go outside and decide that this is perfect weather for an overnight, and it's Tuesday. yis
  20. Picture me waving through the smoke and ashes and wishing that the Beatles albums that I have were still in celephane. Oh well. I think, as most of us do, when I say 'my troop', I do not mean ownership of the troop. "My troop" indicates the troop that I take responsibility for the scouts, the program and the skills that I can pass on to the scouts. Key word to me is responsibiity. In my job I have several accounts that I am responsible for the instrumentation to run properly and the operators know how to use it. They are MY accounts. I am responsible for them, I do not take own
  21. Sorry, we use the nested aluminum kits. Without the plates and cups. The skilet top is used more for food prep as we use cast iron skillets and 3 legged 8 or 10 quart duch ovens. 2 skillts per patrol and one dutch oven. The scouts are expected to provide their own plates, cups and eating utensils. We have found that the cast iron is easier to clean, harder to lose, and fairly easy to replace via auctions or garage sales. I think we currently have 10 to 12 spare skillets and 3 or 4 spare dutch ovens. All donated to the troop by members. yis
  22. ps. when fresh out of Basic Training and visiting my old troop at camp I used the d word during a vicious game of spades. The instant the word left my mouth I felt bad since I had failed the expectations of the troop. A lesson that has stayed with me for over 30 yrs. yis
  23. Fuzzy, one word stuck out in your post to me, and that was expect. If we hold our scouts to high expectations they will strive to reach that level. For years I have been the "Enforcer" in the troop that I am with and the scouts have responded to high expectations. Their scout salute is sharp and they have learned pride to be in scout uniform. Not overnight but it will happen. Simple things like seeing a scout sitting on a table during a meeting I will go to the scout and tap the table saying "table" and then tapping a chair say "chair". Somehow they all get the message and I carry
