I am not a redneck and I am mystified by those who think it is something to be proud of.

We all know a Scouter who has Life for life syndrome. The guy who missed Eagle for whatever reason and spends his Scouter career trying to make up for it.

That is exactly what we did....Made a boy sized catapult Made angry birds out of paper machet.......painted it up.......Bang, enginneer craftsman, art in one project.

YEP I heard of such a beast.......One of the local SM's was famous for 100% Eagles. he would sign every merit badge for every boy. The district advancement chair at the time said that he would cancel EBOR till he could get "a scouter friendly to the boy" to participate. Had another unit run like you describe. Husband wife team..... So Question to you JP, are the ASM and SM married???

I will never a bear scout telling me that you had to buy your way into heaven....That is what his minister said. Also same bear scout was telling our muslim scout he was going to hell because he didn't believe in God.

I try to feed the SPL new program and outing ideas....I think it goes in one ear and out the other. I try to sit quietly in the corner of the PLC planning session. Then a backpacking trip worthy a week. Benton Mackaye trail or Chellowee trace isn't too far. My guys don't have that sort of vision yet either.

Footwear???? All but gone are the days of wearing hiking boots while mowing the lawn or to school to break them in. A few short walks will let you know if they are going to rub or not. My son and I hike in trail runners when it is dry or on single day outings. Gore tex soft sided boots when it is wet.....I have a pair of Asolo G420's all leather gore tex nice boots but they are obsolete. To heavy for the type of hiking we do. Great winter boot but that is all.

That is a valid point about age.....He can't attend NYLT locally because he isn't old enough. He could have attended the Jamboree or Philmont yet. Camp staff must be 14 or a 13 year old CIT for a single week.

There are several other posters that have reported the same thing regarding the ECOH. Some were boys who enlisted and off to boot camp others to college and others just not interested. They earned it but simply didn't care about it.

What I am seeing is the Adults are over thinking it.... What do the boys want???? Why is this a troop and not a Patrol activity? Young scouts aren't going to plan a 30 mile weekend trip..... Fluffy body type scouts aren't going to go backpacking at all if they have a choice. I attended a Backpacking district camporee in a neighboring council....The camporee was in April so you had lots of new crossovers along. Hitting the wall is not the end of the world....Sit them down feed them, hydrate them....Call a half an hour break, get their shoes off...... They will make the last mile.

So Kristian how do you measure success on a Back pack trip??? Distance??? Why do you say 5-8 miles isn't enough???? Success from my perspective.....The patrols heading out a head of the of the Adults. When we arrive at the campsite everyone is there in one piece and their camp site is set up. We head home and everyone is present with minimal blisters and no permanent visible scares. Hopefully they learned a thing or two and had some fun.

c) but Q we are talking about cub camping here or they could be parents sharing a tent as boy scout parent tag alongs. So membership issue issue is no issue. They are men so it is ok........Scout son will be tenting with his patrol so it is irrelevant.

My son, Son of an SM, Is held to a much higher standard than the rest of the troop. The CC held his last BOR and it last an hour. One of the Committee members said it was excessive, But he said that he was an impressed by the young man. Made dad smile and yes I am bragging....this coming from a life long scouter whom I hold in high esteem. So SM or CC sons in my troop get special treatment......The higher standard special treatment.

Sure he has power...... How many campfires did he share with the SM and CC? He should have spoke up. I now have two ASM's and I listen to what they say. I am not talking about tearing the youth to shreds in a conversation..... Just mention your concern. Boy rotten scout jimmy said that his dad will get him a new playstation if he earns Star. or Dad said jimmy rotten scout will get a car if he earns Eagle. So explain to me again, why these unscout like boys get to the EBOR and their crappy attitudes, thieving, fighting, drug abusing, porno watchin, and general bad influences are all of a sudden a problem. No sympathy here.... You should have spoke up at second class, first class, star or life.......You missed your chance for quality control. The SM has failed as well. He needs to grow a pair and learn to say no..... Of course the SM might think the lad is fine.

Ok why????? We backpack 2 or 3 times a year, Typical trip is 3 day 20 mile weekend in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains. So as SM you know your boys....You know the trip they are planning..... Someplace new, scout son and I will go investigate and do a weekend trip on our own. Once a week shake down hikes are completely worthless as a conditioning tool.....They are fine for gear testing.... Do you have a bunch of fluffy couch potato types???? If we were going somewhere significantly higher in elevation, or mountains that have very long steep climbs.

If everyone in your little mayberry knew what was going on...... Why would a Eagle Candidate chose to violate the cities wishes......Because you said everyone knew. The boy, his parents, SM and YOU are to blame for this failure. You all knew and still the Eagle project went forward.....You should all be a shamed of yourselves and you should really be a shamed......whining about it on the internet.
