I gotta wonder what damage this does to the young men. Tough to peak when your barely 12... So I wonder when he will quit????

The immediate effect was the boys either got more active or dropped out....... We lost one boy out of 18 at the time......Our attendance has been excellent at meetings and activities since the policy was enacted at the time the first GTA was introduced ..... For advancement it has yet to be tested....Honestly I don't expect it ever will. I understand sports and band interfere......We do quarterly cycles like sports......If a lad wants a board of review he needs to meet the attendance policy the three months prior. So a boy can disappear for marching band and return in time a BOR for the winter court of honor.

Please review this document on the BSA National Website http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/18-125.pdf It is a merit badge councilor orientation guide.......As you read thing about the intent of the program....The intent is more than just sampling various topics or hobbys. I suspect that there are problems with your troops program.....You have read other posts and are still digesting them..... So exactly when do they plan the campouts and patrol activities. I am not gonna do a pro or con.... I am a believer in ZERO merit badge universities, clinics or at troop meetings.

Our troop definition of active is 75% of meetings and outings and 85% for youth leadership. We do not automatically recharter everyone.....You must be active to recharter.

A number of lads have brought paperwork to me recently that ask for scoutmaster approval or recommendation....... So what exactly does that mean to you as SM? When would you withhold it?

Now all councils are different.... But you are refering to what is called Fund our Salaries. This is when the Paid council folks snooker our families out of their hard earned money. I too donated a few years, Thinking the money was going to be used to maintain our camps, or buy uniforms, books and programs for those less fortunate. Well not so much. Council books are closed so you will never truly know where all the money goes. You will never know how much they take in or spend..... I have a beef because of the closed books and.............. So explain to me a trap shooting event they bragged raised $!5,000 on a district level......So explain to me why the camporee is $15 a head just to participate So where did all that money that was raised in the name of the boys go????? The folks manning the stations donate the supplies, no patches.......Parents and leaders are asking why $15 and then they have the audacity to complain at roundtable to complain that none of the troops participated. I am frustrated by FOS.....I have no problem donating my money, but for a SE who is making $200k a year....... We told the District NO one year and they came to our Blue and Gold uninvited and struck before the Pack leadership could respond......We were serving food and he came in walked right up on stage and started the presentation. Look at those free rank advancement patches.....Not belt loops, event patches nothing else......So Free rank is like $2 per boy.......Our council includes going to a council owned camp..... Your better off just buying them.

for craftsmen we made a boy sized catapult and angry bird setup......They cut birds out of sponges and we make buildings out of cardboard tubes.......it was a blast.......They would spend entire den meeting making buildings and then knocking them over... We combined it with engineer and scientist if I remember right......I remember doing experiments with release points in the arc and number of bungees.....

The entire reason Trail Life USA was created was because they are sick of liberalism, multicultralism, political correctness and alternative lifestyles "being shoved down their throats." Your Troop seems to be lax on teaching the Scout Oath and Law also. Perhaps you should have them implement a new award where they stop you once a month, and have you prove you know what they are, what they mean, and that you actually do try to live by them. Unfortunately, from your comments here, you seem to be sorely lacking in the Courteous part, along with a few others. Young man, being on an internet board, and feeling that you are "immune" to consequences, does NOT excuse the above behavior. Especially on a Scout forum, from someone claiming to be an under 18, Boy Scout, and a leader in his Troop. BTW - I HAVE read both - the Charter and Bylaws of the Boy Scouts of America (pub 57-191), and the Rules and Regulations of the Boy Scouts of America (pub 57-492). The best way to see how a scout performs is to SEE how they perform and ask them some questions (which you are loathe to do). That process does not require another doodad on the uniform. I bailed the second I found out he was a youth..... I see nothing wrong with a Patrol looking to enhance it's identity. Had a patrol that wore green bandanna's on their wrists when I first joined the troop......Little to gangsta for my taste.....

My son is probably going to be a deathbed eagle.....14 years old Star scout........No leadership position currently....Really excited about the OA the fall fellowship is in about a month and he simply can't wait to attend, and his memory the Jambo is more to the positive side now......He is going to apply to be a CIT next summer at the camp we attend.... He and his patrol have volunteered to work at to local cub spook o ree......should be fun. So will he get eagle???? who knows.....I hope... He is having a bunch of fun currently and that is good enough for dad.

Oh know KDD are you talking about kudu's bain....EDGE. Your friend is correct the best way to learn, and master the skill is to teach it. IOLS staff was a lot of fun, but demanding and a big commitment.

While a SMC is neither pass or fail.....A SM can use scout spirit or performance of the POR to slow a lad down. But if a lad is gung ho then how can you fail him on scout spirit barring any behavior issues, which I bet the lad doesn't have any..... As KDD pointed out.....it should have been done at either star or the Life position.
