Larger groups in the wilderness
Basementdweller replied to Brewmeister's topic in Camping & High Adventure
Make it a patrol outing instead of a troop outing......same itereary different weekends... I have had a number of bad experiences on the AT with scout troops......including being thrown out of a public shelter which I was at first. So I discourage taking troop sized groups into the back country -

Simple genius....we have a huge travel center/ gas station not too far away on the correct side of the highway. It is about volume...8 out of 10 people will tell you no. But the other two are yes. So a gas station with 300 people thru the door an hour makes 6-10 sales an hour. Thx -
A number of my post regarding required uniforming all of a sudden say awaiting moderation and not visible to the public.

Keeping Track of Merit Badges

The lesson is responsibility. Honestly I could careless where my scout stores his partials. He is the one going to have to pay the price if he loses them. I will not micromanage my sons scout career lime the OP. Seriously scanning your sons advancement for him.....what lesson is in that....mom. and dad will make sure I am covered. So when I screw up even a little bit there in no consequences -

Is he still Involved in Scouting or did Baseball take over in his life?.. Wonder what Happened to him afterwards. Apparently not. He is listed as SPL here http://troop874.org/pos.htm'>http://troop874.org/pos.htm It is in a troop in the general area of where he lives and his name is unique enough that I am fairly certain it is him. look at this.... http://troop874.org/ Boy I don't like that home page.

I am wondering if we are speaking to a home schooler here. We had a home schooler in our pack when I was CM. Bright boy, But he was EXTREMELY socially delayed. While mom claimed he was in 4th grade education wise he enjoyed playing with the Tigers more than his peers. He could sit down and do book work or a craft. But a game of tag or crab fights no interest.

I read on bryan on scouting about units selling $35k in popcorn, several here have said $20k is easy. Really? We had a cub leader who is a city council women in the burb a crossed the beltway that introduced and got passed a city ordinance that blocks us from selling door to door or at store fronts without a city issued permit. Since our sponsoring organization is not within the city we will not be issued a permit. This has always been a problem with their unit adults yelling at us and telling us to get out of their neighborhoods and from in front of their stores. They have called council who has asked us to stay in our turf. That unit posted on their website that they have sold $23k in popcorn this year so far. Well going with the hand we were dealt, we sold door to door, 3 weekends, 6 days and 6 hours each day. We sold $1300. for the hours and time spent the boys will get about $10 each toward recharter. yes I know it is $300 more than we had. The boys will earn less than a $1 an hour for our effort. I have spent more on gas and lunches than we made. I am going to write this up and present it at roundtable and even to the city council. I know the units in the burb will never budge and share. But I would like to at least get some of them thinking and maybe the District volunteers might intervene or speak to them about it. Yes I am complaining, I know that most of you have zero empathy for me. But the looks on the guys faces when I told them how much we sold and they earned....didn't leave me with a good feeling. I just isn't right. We are not asking for a hand out. Simply some time in front of the stores and the ability to knock on some of doors.

Should We or They Be Embarrassed; or Both?
Basementdweller replied to skeptic's topic in Open Discussion - Program
You keep linking to your grand presentation.. I have got to ask, have you actually ever done it, in an actual school during school hours with permission of the school administrator. I am luck to get a spot on the front yard or a table at open house night. -

Probably because it is either a unit program or maybe a district. Something they will try to pitch to national..... -
Interestimg.......then when something happens we will will talk about the leader who allowed his group to become seperated in a bad manner.

Keeping Track of Merit Badges

YOu are missing the entire point of scouting. Your post has too many I's in it. The boys are supposed to do it for themselves...The simplest solution for a lad of 11 to master is a zip loc bag or a shoe box. He puts all of his advancement cards in the box for the future. This isn't cub scouts, so step back take a nice deep breath. -
I know that guy, He is the Metro sexual scouter who was going to join Trail Life because he isn't going to camp with gays.......Well he showed back up at round table.

It should be about fun. Wheres the fire???? I didn't think so. There is the belt loop and pin program, lots of fun to be had there. how about the Gold and silver arrow points???? has he attended any of the council or district cub events??? So is the boy that interested in advance or is Mom and/or Dad pushing him? Your article is dated, I believe there is a boy who has finished it younger than that. I will say rare is the lad who Eagles that early and It certainly won't happen in my Troop because we are too busy doing other things to focus completely on advancement. The important thing to remember that Advancement is only one aspect or method of scouting. http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/cubscouts/parents/about/pandm.aspx

Scouting for Food - When?
Basementdweller replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Pretty common round here for them to close the camps completely during deer gun season. The deer will migrate on to the scout camp during fall bow hunting season. They know it is safe.... It isn't uncommon to see herds of 15 or more during the day at fall scout events. Our gun season is the weeks around thanksgiving. The Council leases the property for hunting to a group of guys, They pay some pretty big bucks as the story goes. There is a rumor that a select group of Scouters get to hunt as well, no idea if it is true or not.....
