  1. Well it says you can count one week of summer camp right? Some campsites have adirondacks only and your troop may have that site assigned- does the boy get ripped off of that week? Also, the summer camps I have seen have ye ol' canvas tents on platforms all set up and you can count that. Out of 20 nights you only need set up a tent once, right? I actually always preferred adirondacks to sleep in.
  2. Why does it have to be a tent? Why not a lean-to or dining fly shelter? Now that's LNT! Scrap the GPS. I don't know how to use one and probably never will since I have made it this far in life without one. And yah, Scout related campouts only- I'll go for that.
  3. I am very happily married with a supportive wife and no children. It's all about giving back and helping to teach tomorrows Scout leaders. My wife is very proud that I want to serve as an ASM. I had 4 SMs growing up-1 married with grown Eagle Scout, 1 single former Scout, 1 married with infants former Scout, and 1 father of Scout. We had a single ASM whose father was SM in the 60's. All good men willing to serve. For my troop's 75th anniversary in 1987 we got to meet the first SM of the troop who was a 18 y/o college student in town in 1912. He was single then. Oops I had his age as 21 but I r
  4. SR540 Beav, come on up to NH. I can take you to my church where the Hym books are as old as the church building. It's a great service too. The truth in the Gospel is spoken. The cushions in the pews are rock hard, the Pastor is looking straight at you all the time (he looks at EVERYONE all through the service- right?). We have no band, no A.V. system. How church was in the day I suppose. KJV Bibles too, none of the "make you feel better about church" versions. Now that might get me some flack, but it IS the original version, isn't it? See Eamonn, we can get way off course VERY easily!!! Oh Bea
  5. Oh no Gonzo, don't tell me you've gone over to change the uniform camp where Brianbuf is the SM! PM sent last week-ain't heard back from ya! Don't need no beads to lead!(This message has been edited by local1400)
  6. Moxieman, the requirements are still the same in the 2006 Boy Scout Requirements Book. They are found on page 220message.((This message has been edited by local1400)
  7. I have a Fifth edition 10th printing from 1968. I too use that and it's in great shape. I love the artwork and the fine pictures of a better, simpler time that I never knew. BTW, the price on the inside cover is $1.25.
  8. Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, " I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not hike in darkness, but shall have the light of life." John 8:12
  9. Newspaper is a great insulator. The homeless have survived many brutal nights because of it. However, the newsprint can stain your tent floor and other gear and when it gets wet, its wet and messy.
  10. YES-you have eight of them! Hang in there because these Webelos who are shopping for a troop may find that in the larger troops they may feel sorta left out maybe, or something, and remember your troop and what you did with them. It's not the quantity but quality of your unit. And invite that woman to join you anyway as an ASM. She may take you up on the offer, then her boy may follow, then others. Never give up gwd, never. Good luck and keep us posted.
  11. Lisabob, Gern and Eamonn are right on. I use a close cell foam pad AND several wool blankets under me. And I have plenty of body fat. The ground draws the heat out of your body so the wool adds another layer plus it makes the pad softer. I prefer the Army surplus ones-they seem to last longer.
  12. Hey Moxie, thanks for the links. Wish I could attend but my days off are Wed & Thu. Plus Hudson is over two hours one way. We are kinda forgotten up here- except when it comes time for $.
  13. I can only imagine the sense of accomplishment that John feels when he has learned a new skill. As you teach him a new skill, you can teach him english. Tent, sqare knot, campfire. He will pick it up. Lisabob has a great thought. Maybe Scouts is the one place he feels accepted right now? I don't think we need to cram advancement down kids throats at the pace we are today. It took me five years to earn Life. What's wrong with that?
  14. Peng1-just jump in anything you feel you want to get into. Everyone has a different opinion, and that's what makes it work. Welcome Scout!
  15. We ate family-style at tables for ten at my camp. Staff members were seated at each table. We could get "bumped" by a Unit leader but they usually ate with other leaders. Staff members set the manners example at the tables and the Scouts really looked up to us. You talked about where they from, how they like camp, etc... Getting to eat with different Scouts each day was very rewarding. It is an experience that you can't get anywhere else. Hey, I'm all for the Patrol Method, but dining wth strangers who all share one common bond is the best! OGE has mentioned some of the other benefits as well
  16. acco40- If you use Nalgene bottles with the wide mouths, turn them upside down to prevent the opening from freezing. As far as 3-5 gal jugs I just dont know. If it is that cold so they freeze solid I dont think you need rehydration. Call the coroner.
  17. Well Gags, she'd been there 3 weeks now, what's one more day? Suppose that one stays/one goes as you suggest, the one who goes runs into trouble, the one who stayed decides three days and no help, I gotta go. So brother two goes, and something happened to him and now you have three lost souls! Unless they call 911 on their cell phones.
  18. Well Gonzo1, you drive on up here next summer and we will drive 4 more hours East to my old camp and I will buy you supper in their new dining hall. Then we can get a slush puppy at the trading post and trade a CSP! Local.
  19. Kudu-don't you know that this is the only form of factory left in America? All other factories closed up and moved over the border leaving millions of Americans under-employed!
  20. Welcome Brandon and WOW I've got to say that I have never heard of this before but I am sure you're not alone. You're absolutely right you do run the meeting and must maintain order. I would suggest a meeting with all your Green Bar Scouts, all leaders, and the Troop Committee. Get it out in the open tactfully. I'd rather see hurt feelings than a dead troop. Use all the reference materials available to you including SPL/PLC handbooks. Always keep the Scout Oath and Law in the forefront and good luck to you.
  21. Kenk-Personal Locator Beacon? She should have invested her money in some training. Her own stupidity for not knowing what she was doing and then just call 911 when you are ready to die? People like her dont belong in the woods UNLESS or UNTIL they are experienced and there are plenty of places to get that. Kill the tv- people are watching and doing too much these days.
  22. That's good Owl. Welcome to the forum. I like my carrots with butter, eggs with real mayo, and cream and sugar in my coffee!
  23. Summer camp was the highlight for eight summers for me growing up. I have made many friendships from boys who are all now men from all over our state. I liked having tents all set up giving you room to stretch out and dining halls serving great food so you spent no time on meal prep/cleanup. That was reserved for our troops monthly campout. We didn't have money growing up (come to think of it, I still dont!) but I worked hard to pay for Scout camp. As a family we could not afford trips so this was my Disney vacation. Camp is what you make it. As a teenaged staffer we worked hard, long days to
  24. Eamonn, Since moxie and I are neighbors sorta, this is definately Patriots country. But if you want to see a big council with sparse units check out the Katahdin Area Council. ( covering 2/3 of the State o'Maine and 1/3 of the population!) It's where I grew up and sad to see so few units left. A prospective scout may have to drive an hour to a Scout meeting in some locations. And UofS could be a three hour or more drive for some!
