There are 3 young men in our troop who play varsity football at the H.S. I am a pretty big guy and I wouldn't call these kids nerds! If the kids aren't crying to Texas about uniforms then let it go. I've got to be frank here and say I have never heard ONE complaint about the Scout uniform amongst the 30 boys in our troop or 7 leaders. The only complaints I hear are here, from adults! So if the reasons we are Scouting don't mind then we shouldn't. Yes, I like the colored backing rank and POR patches better but it is what it is and I am going to wear it proudly. We have troop t-shirts for camping and such but I am real proud of the uniforming in our troop for parades, meetings, and service projects, and wherever uniforms are necessary. Now, if I could only sell them on neckerchiefs......

OK Gern, I see your point. You and I are both in the hills and like here I'm sure you have plenty of rescues there of people who don't have the skills to be doing what they are trying to do. Even some rescuers have died here when the rescuee was found safe. The mountains are unforgiving. Sometimes you gotta know your limits and when to turn around instead of forging ahead. And your mountains are twice as big as mine!

I would tell any parent that a Scout who is trained and follws the rules would have no use for one (Stay in one place, use buddy system, etc...). But would not push the issue but remind the parent the consequences of a false alarm. I read a story about a canoeist in NY who got into trouble and used one. Fine. He went back to retrieve his gear, couldn't find it and pulled the hook again! He was fined and billed for the second "rescue". I'm glad you don't use that useless GPS thing anymore. Although excellent, rugged tents, the Eureka Timberline tents run kinda small so we only had two per. Sometimes an odd man would sleep alone. I still use a 2 man dome I bought in 1989 for my H.S. graduation gift to myself- A Eureka WindRiver 2. Beaver, thanks for the link about the girls. They were only a year or two older than me. Sad. Gern, I respect your sound advice in your posts. But I am dismayed at the surge to buy GPS and PLB's for wilderness play. I like to hike and camp the old fashioned way-with knowledge and experience. I think if one plans a trip with a possible rescue in mind, that person doesn't belong in the woods in the first place!

OGE, I remember the Camp Director smoking in the kitchen and in the Dining Hall during SM and Staff meetings in the mid 80's! There have been many highs in Scouting to narrow it down to just one. International Jambo in Canada in 84? Four summers working at Scout Camp? OA Conclave? Or maybe the fellowship of council campfire on friday nights, hundreds of youth served, patches earned or traded, meals shared with strangers who became friends? Every second was worth the price of admission-which was a bargain.

C-Bolt, my hats off to you. You are that rare Scout who is not "too cool" for Scouts and play sports too. There is also a football player in my troop. I love it when he addresses the troop. My favorite is "When you wear that Scout uniform, you REPRESENT this Troop, this community....". You know, you've heard it. Keep up the good work.

I work outdoors 10 hours a day switchin' out boxcars. We have no facilities sometimes and you gotta do what you gotta do when you gotta do it. Hence, local ALWAYS has a roll of the good stuff in his coat pocket. And since local is roving around on his feet all day, you remember where you did your business last. Well, daily. milwscout580, When I worked on Staff we wore standard Scout uniforms. We also had t-shirts and one year had polo shirts with staff embroidery. We also had hats and neckerchiefs like most camps that said staff on them. We had to wear our camp staff name badges at all times. I had a couple of the dark green Exploring uniforms I got used for cheap-they said Boy Scouts of America over the right pocket so I put on CSP, numerals, and lodge flap. No one ever said anything about it.

Well Gonzo and I have danced around this subject before, we'll dance again. The Easternmost Scout camp in the U.S., Katahdin Area Council's Camp Roosevelt in East Eddington, Maine gets my vote. 1800 acres with a clean lake that is undeveloped, great DINING HALL, lots of history and tradition. Always attracted troops from out of state and from Canada too. Home to the second largest log dining hall East of the Mississippi River, built in 1929.

eghiglie, I'm just curious, do you measure a unit by the amount of WB trained leaders? If you have a strong PLC who are all JLT trained, or whatever they call it these days, Larry, Curly, and Moe can be SM and ASM's. Don't need no beads to lead!
