  1. In my scout days (80's) all BORs were conducted by adults from the troop committee. We had one gentleman in particular with NO left arm (WW2 vet) and I always didnt know how to give the scout handshake in this situation! However I have a 1972 printing of "Patrol and Troop Leadership" (ah-remember the green covers?) which states the 'The progress review for TF, SC, and FC is handled by the troop leaders council. On pg. 99 titled 'Who Serves?'it says the PL's serve and the SPL, or when assigned the ASPL serves as the chairman of the review. Hey, I know its 34 years old, but that old stuff worked
  2. Good job SPL. SSScouter mentions the shoebox of your treasures. Hopefully, you will continue in scouting and the shoebox turns into a steamer trunk! Just because you have earned your Eagle dont let that be the end of your scouting legacy. Teach and encourage the ones who will follow you.
  3. Welcome Shermy- Lots of good info, advice, and all lifes answers here. Great work for Eagle!! Good to get a younger perspective.
  4. Too much ornamentation? I look at my uniform and think "Wheres the color?" Its like a few years back when Pepsi made clear soda! I have to really look at ranks today-used to be easy to tell star from tenderfoot! Or POR patches with silver and gold bands- now you have to READ them.
  5. What are the ages and ranks? You could sit with them and find out what their main interest is or what they do/do not like about scouting and go from there. Sometimes there is nothing you can do about it. Good luck and try to focus a little energy in their direction regarding some merit badges to earn they may be interested in.
  6. Ed Palmer-thanks for that link to Eagle scouts. I perused over the list and I just knew you couldnt go wrong with an astronaut. However, I was surprised to learn Marion Barry was an Eagle! I enjoy Mike Rowes tv show "Dirty Jobs" and I find him to be a likeable personality.
  7. John-in-KC-----those boots cost you 0.027397 +/- cents per day. Come on, dont be so cheap next time you buy boots!
  8. Although they are not hiking boots, for around the campsite after hiking all day I wear Merrell Jungle Mocs. They have a nice soft interior, great gripping tread, and require NO laces. I actually have 2 pair (rotate for freshness) that I wear daily and have disposed of my sneakers. Sounds like your daughter has the opportunity of a life-time! I wish her safe travels. Oh- I almost forgot--the most important thing to remember with boots is to spare no expense for comfort. Make sure she buys good socks (like Smartwool or Thorlos) and as she hikes her feet muscles will grow so avoid tight boots. A
  9. I wasnt going to jump in this one but... Didnt the now-extinct Quebec Nordiques of the National Hockey League have FdL's on their jerseys?
  10. Gonzo NUMBER 1-- I'm not picking on anyone, just having some fun!!!Scouting is FUN! The original point to this thread (I think) was about us forum members gettin' together and in my head I had visions of a donnybrook, fisticuffs, rumble, etc... All in good fun as I said earlier I am the troop clown. Dont take anything I write seriously you read it twice and you will see the sarcasm there! YIS local(may or may not be crazy)1400!
  11. Ooops! Sorry OGE-- I think I know what you mean. I try not to dally into politics too much. Okay then, Neil Armstrong? Do any 14 year olds even know who Neil Armstrong is?
  12. Thanks Beav. You'll notice I am the troop clown. Always have been and can't help it. I just love to have fun. My wife says I have missed my true calling. ED-- All I want out of Pittsburgh is to try a sandwich from Primanti Bros. Going there next summer for my Union conference and watch me eat a few!!!!!(This message has been edited by local1400)
  13. "Just don't get me riled up Pack, I'll have to dig my brass knuckles back out and take care of you!" Hey Beav, from the Phelps plans protest thread. Insert smily face here please. local. (This message has been edited by local1400)(This message has been edited by local1400)
  14. My father is a vet of the Korean era and heavily involved in his American Legion Post. The Post conducts flag retirements in a cemetary using the strictest guidelines set forth. I am sorry I do not know these guidelines but I think others said it best that campfires on your weekend outing are for fun and fellowship, and I have never seen the ceremony performed. Vets dont LIKE burning flags, even if it is proper.
  15. I've noticed that many people do not list a location in their profiles and myself have only listed a region of my beautiful state( I can see Mt. Washington if I lean way out the porch of my apartment). While meeting some would be interesting for sure, there certainly have been some heated discussions! Leavin' the brass knucks at home SR540 Beav?
  16. Welcome Brian, I am also involved in Boy Scouts without any children at all. The teaching of skills and traditions is most rewarding.
  17. I have an 11 year old tenderfoot I like to work with. He does everything "according to the book". He always shows up in full uniform and he reminds me of me when I was his age. We really have a great bunch of kids. We have a 15 year-old who moved to town and showed up one night having never been to scouts. He is working hard to earn his eagle.
  18. Hey Cave, I thought I recognized some Geddy Lee!
  19. Try to build an inverted tri-pod tower. We built one for scout week when I was a scout. Another year we built a monkey bridge in the Mall over a fountain where daring souls could try it! Of course todays scouts would not be caught dead in a mall with their uniforms on. Dont they know women cant resist a man in uniform?
  20. Welcome Caveman. Feels like Fla. here at 47F on Christmas eve. Some Canadian Geese out in the yard still! There is lots to learn here and everyone will help you out. Good luck with your units.
  21. Gearshocker- you have written a well thought post. However, I am still amazed at the controversy regarding uniforms. Growing up in the 80's I never heard of scouts not wanting to wear the uniform. The other night at our troop meeting I really looked around. 15 boys in attendance (approx. 1/3) and only 1 wore a neckerchief besides me. SPL was not wearing uniform. Most boys wore scout pants, 11 and 12 year olds, and some put uniform on and took off so as not to be seen. Whats the shame? At Scout camp where I staffed class "A" was always worn for dinner. Staff had to be in class A all the time. I
  22. It's a good thing this forum has the "Airing of Grievances" available 24/7 year-round. Merry Christmas to all.
