  1. My interpretation of the 1Horn/1Blower rule is to eliminate any possible unwanted lip-touching among Scouters.
  2. Hunt, we tell all-boys and adults, that FULL uniform is expected. And I will come out and say that I am PRO-UNIFORM 100% including Scout outerwear (jackets!). If it is not official BSA uniform or insignia, you will not find it on me. The only exception of course is underdraws and footwear, and the footwear is tasteful.
  3. The Boy Scout Fieldbook has much to offer for all kinds of different levels of experience plus so much more!
  4. No Pack, I haven''t been to Brevard since 2000 when I moved back home. I used to work for an overnight courier and Brevard and Pisgah Forest were my areas. I always thought the only thing missing from that lovely town was a drive-in theatre to make you think you went back in time. I do crave those chocolate cokes though! Very nice people there, and as for the theatre, I had a key to the door to deliver the movie cans and scan the bar code on the wall-no one home at 11 a.m!
  5. Yes. You can read the story and see photos on The Asheville Citizen Times website.
  6. While we''re on the subject, it appears that I am the only adult in my unit that is not Woodbadge trained, or signed up to be. I often wonder, why, in a boy-led organization, do adult leaders need to be trained to be great leaders? I feel the training emphasis should be focused on the BOYS (JLT/NYLT????). Why the push for WB? Isn''t it enough for me to take all my Scouting experience and just supervise and let the PLC do what the PLC is supposed to do?
  7. They probably just wanted to stay another night so they could get chocolate Cokes from Rocky''s in Brevard.
  8. Ah John, I knew I could depend on you for this info. (Did you get my PM reply?) Taking the train is an economical way for Scouts to transport long distances. I once had a lovely breakfast on VIA Rail Canada. Only fill your beverage half way!
  9. Probably not, although my tv is only 13 inches. I spend about 40 to 50 hours a week wasting away in a hotel, so tv is somewhat of an outlet to utter boredom while there (until I buy a laptop). Pack, I can watch the Weather Channel for hours, despite it being the same every 15 minutes. But I do enjoy PBS, the History channel, and of course, Patriots and Red Sox. No sitcoms since Seinfeld folded.
  10. We do popcorn, as well as other fundraisers too. I am not aware of any quotas. Hersheygirl has made it clear that her sons enjoy this unit so seeking out another one is not an option here. Sorry Hershey, I do not have any solution to offer, just a welcome to the forum and hope you stick around.
  11. I can''t figure it out. Having a hard time carrying the 2.
  12. Link worked ok. Not sure what it is. Could even be a camp patch. Could be non-Scout related. There are several different websites that deal directly with Scout patches and etc.
  13. I have often wondered what to do with my old MB sash from my youth. I can''t wear it, although I think boys should wear theirs for BOR and COH. Not to hijack the thread, but what have you other adults done with your old sash?
  14. This forum for the most part is exactly what Scouting has to offer. I have learned many things, we have all helped each other on some subject, made friends with a few, shared experiences, and even had some laughs. Impersonal? Yeah, but without this forum, how really would you meet some great people who all have a passion for Scouting?
  15. Gonz, which section? How was it overall? I have always wanted to thru-hike, but time and money are on backorder. I have only day hiked some Maine pieces. 100 mile wilderness is on my must do list within 5 years.
  16. Yah, Gern send me an application from your employer. My vacation, two weeks from now, will include moving a storage unit to my house, a lawn mowing, a dinner with friends, a Scout meeting, and a council camping event. And hopefully, Red Sox playoff wins!
  17. Spam when sliced and fried is a pretty good breakfast meat without refrigeration concerns. Also canned ham patties. In the 80s when I was a Scout I had a local store that sold canned bacon. I wish I could find some again. It had a key to cut that big soup can in half, pull out the parchment paper, unfold and unroll and you got yerself some fine, fresh bacon there. Does anybody remember this stuff or has anybody seen this anywhere? And also, those shake and pour pancakes are easy but I find the "makes x cakes" means silver dollar sized. I also like english muffins grilled in butter with some jam/jelly/PB or what like you?
  18. Next time you browse, check out Camp Bell at the Daniel Webster Council website.
  19. Interesting. Will the adult leaders sample and judge the meals? Could be a good competition for the patrols and to see who can really serve it up good.
  20. Are the kids today still listening to Metallica? I saw them live in 1989, at an age when I knew everything. Still can''t get that ringing out of my head. Or maybe it is the thought reader the aliens installed humming away.
  21. Saw some Scouts use the ol'' half an orange to cook cake batter in. Wasn''t too bad. Play around with this one to bake it through.
  22. Scoutnut has the right one. Our camp staff sung this song at each closing campfire. Try 40 guys hitting the high note and holding it on "righteousness".Edited Part: I listened to the Burl Ives version and can only say that we held (?) out the notes a little longer. During the chorus, done softly, one Scout would repeat the Oath.(This message has been edited by local1400)
  23. If you are truly worried how the troop will carry on without you Chef, are you ready to pull the pin? And since your son has earned Eagle and the other will soon, does that mean their affiliation (and yours too) with the troop must end? I had a SM whose son had earned Eagle 15 years prior to my TF days, and was a wonderful leader.
  24. CalicoPenn, So, you know Seboomook? I think the Ellsworth McD's and a few more still sell McLobsters seasonaly. New Hampshire is not known for anything. But as a Mainer-in-Exile, Lobster and Steamed Clams. Theres also Pats Pizza. Or a W.A. Bean and Sons red snappy hot dog, with ketchup and diced onions on a grilled hot dog roll. Or Fresh fried Scallops with tarter sauce, and for DanKroh, in Mass, it's got to be Kellys Roast Beef.
  25. Axes and hatchets should be troop equipment. Each has a specific job so both should be used and taught how to be used properly. I prefer Snow and Nealley brand tools. Their website claims they no longer accept orders online but can give you info on how and where to purchase them. Expensive, but a lifetime investment. Handmade in Bangor, Maine (USA!) since the late 1800's. I love my kindling axe. You get what you pay for. I once received one of those Wal-Mart type all metal hatchets. I think it lasted me two months.Edited Part: Just checked the website and found retailers located in many locations of several different states I clicked on. Also available through L.L. Bean. Happy Chopping!(This message has been edited by local1400)
