I would say you should have some kind of plan even if its just an outline of things to do but are not set for specific times. Remember control through activity if you give them enough time to tie there shoe you are giving them enough time to get into mischief. Anyway just my wacky 2 cents... I was wondering if anyone out there knows of companies... any companies that offer a discount or something free to Scouters ... I am asking as I want to compile a list of these companies... For example Bass Pro Shop gives Scouters a 10% discount Sports Chalet use to offer a discount, not sure if they still do but I know they offer discounts of things like there snorkel class I have heard Macdonald's will give leaders on long drives such as summer camp free coffee Thanks for anything you can send my way... What made your course special?
insanescouter replied to BeaverIII's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
I went through one of the last of the old courses so, keep that in mind with my responses.... I would say the people, working together as a patrol to over come a variety of planned and unplanned challenges Keep in mind by the time I went to woodbadge I had been scouting for over 20 years and had served on district training team for several years... so a lot of the sit there and listen to a lecture was heard, done ... but the action parts were all awesome... In the end I really lied the ticket and working it as well as the mental boost it gave me... Anyway just my wacky 2 cents... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org -

All of us at InsaneScouter have been hard at work rebuilding InsaneScouter from the ground up. We are proud to announce that the new site is in Beta 1. The new site is easier to use, find content on, to maintain and add resources too. Additionally, it has new features like the ability to rate the content 1 to 5 stars, post comments about the content, and much more. In the coming months you will also be able to search for resources. We would like to encourage you to check it out at http://beta.insanescouter.org and let us know what you like and don't like. We know there are a number of problems of content displaying in the wrong categories, this is being worked on. Also only about 60% of the content from the old site has been moved over. What you tell us now will make InsaneScouter better for all, tomorrow. Thank You and please feel free to pass this along... Scott Robertson scott@insanescouter.org

question about camping merit badge

We take it to mean 1 week long camp out counts, too... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org -
I can tell you that being a BSA volunteer is fun, rewarding and always a learning experience. BSA offers more trainings then you could ever take and with all of us human resources available online and offline such as through your local roundtable you will never have a hard time finding someone to talk to, bounce and idea off of, or ask for advice. I also suggest if you do decided to help, don't jump in. Help one step at a time, take on one thing, and slowly expand. Trust me if you said yes to every request that will be made of you - well the "1 hour a week" will become your free time if you are lucky. So my second suggestion is to be ok with saying no - you dont have to like saying no, but understand that you have to now and then for the sanity yourself and your family. Like many have suggested start with the online training, and find out when your local boy scout leader essentials is - take that. Also no matter how small the Troop is make sure it is youth ran! Anyway thats my wacky input... hope it helps... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org

I consider myself an environmentalist of sorts ... yet it surprises me how people buy something because its supposable good for the environment - which may be true they could pour that cleaner into a lake and hurt nothing ... but is the way that product produced worse for the mother nature ... a hybrid car may use less gas and put out less exhaust but what about the lead batteries, all the extra components that make it work - what is the trade off ... I am not saying in either of these examples that the trade off is good or bad .. they are just 2 examples I pulled from my head with no evidence - just take it as something to think about ... We do not have dues. After having so many problems and complaints - it just wasnt worth it ... We got the Johnny didn't pay so why should we, the tracking headaches, etc ... What we did is hold many fundraisers and the parents fill in the rest ... it works for us ... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org

I am with a Troop and we do have formal ByLaws, we even have the parent and scout sign an agreement form - saying the agree to follow the bylaws ... now the reality is we have never enforced them and just use them as guidelines. The bylaws and some other info make up our parents guide. Over the last year we have deleted some 6-10 pages out of our parent guide. Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
