I showed this thread to a friend who served in the National Guard for 4 years. He said it sounds like a good idea. He went on to say there seems to be a lack of appreciation of what these people do for us and a lack of understanding of what many of them go through. I thought others might like to see his comments... anyway just some wacky 2 cents... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org Helping leaders one resource at a time....

Wood Badge Reunions
insanescouter replied to SilverFoxNEIV95's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Woodbadge Reunions seems like a brilliant idea to me, which I have never heard of before... I am a good old bobwhite and been on the Scouting express for over 20 years... Maybe you could share with us some of the things you do. Of course maybe that should be in a different thread. Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org Helping leaders one resource at a time.... -
New Leader Essentials & Webelos Leader Specific is all you need to be considered a trained Webelos Den Leader. However I do agree you should take - Outdoor Leadership Skills for Webelos Leaders - Youth Protection (a most for anyone working with the boys) Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org Helping leaders one resource at a time....

I would like to see NYLT being able to extend its name... for example we wanted to do that here and the council flat out refuses to let use, so we just do it unofficially. The name the first youth staffed picked 4 courses ago was "Golden Tomahawk" and we are still using that name unofficially. It helps build a certain excitement and drive for the young staff members and helps build a tradition to bring in more participants and staff year after year. I know its just a name, but it does work. At the end of the course the youth staff presents a "Golden Tomahawk" (made of wood). The next year we re-use the same "golden tomahawk", but after each year something has been added to it by the patrol that got it the year before. I should also state I don't think our NYLT should just be called "Golden Tomahawk" what we do is "NYLT - Golden Tomahawk" that way every one knows what it is. Just my wacky 2 cents.... Bob white good point that I didn't mention in my list ... there should be information and maybe even a packet going out to units 3-4 months in advance. Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org Helping leaders one resource at a time....

I am for co-ed Scouting to and have served on camp staff many times. The last time I was the adult male over the male youth staff camp. Yes we had problems of them trying to sneak off to the girls camp, etc.. but it was never that big of a deal. Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org Helping leaders one resource at a time....

I have also heard that you are not suppose to wear patches and other parts of a older or newer uniform... so if you are wearing the standard uniform that we wear now the so called 1981 unifrom then you have to wear the patches that were meant for that shirt. If you want to wear the new colors and patches meant for the new shirt then you have to go to the new shirt. Anyone know if this is true... don't remember where I heard it and have no info to back it up, but it seems to make sense to me. As a general rule I won't chair a camp-o-ree without at least 6 months notice. It really does take time to build a staff, find and secure a location, many locations require proof of at least a 1 million dollar bond, fight council to get the info the location wants on the bond, fight council for funding, provide council with a budget, revise the budget, fight with council so more, get the patch designed and ordered, figure out the events, get the supplies needed for the events, figure out who is running the event, coordinate with the order of the arrow to get there help, we often arrange to have one of the local fire departments to provide a medic .... anyway you get the idea ... maybe it is worse where I am as far as getting council help and support as well as some of the other hoops we may have to go through ... also could be a difference in the size and complexity of the events we do who knows ... anyway just my wacky 2 cents --- and hoping they help ... Innovative, lasting service projects
insanescouter replied to shortridge's topic in Order of the Arrow
My project was repairing a 1/2 mile nature trail for a county park. The project involved relining the trail with rock, replacing trail marker signs that corresponds to the info flyer for the self guided tour, creating several of the exhibits on the trail, etc. The project took almost 200 man hours and involved two troops and two packs of helping hands. A friends eagle project was installing outhouses in a city park. Just two more ideas for the list... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org Helping leaders one resource at a time.... -

I have actually not done water rocket event but I as a youth I was a young astronaut and as a boy scout leader have helped with model rocket events. Here is my 2 cents - always make sure safety comes first regardless if from a miss fire or the rocket falling back the ground - keep it simple and make it fun - prizes most creative, highest flyer, best design, weirdest pain job, best explosion, etc - I would say have the Scouts premake the rockets themselves or with in the den/patrol level then on launch day make it into some kind of special mission - I am not a big fan of popcorn (not a discussion for this thread) and would never put it over a fun event like rockets ... however if for your unit doing so may help get families involved in the fundraisier then it may work for you... Hope this helps... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org

I was called out the year after the tap outs were done away with. I was and am still very disappointed. I personally as a Scout and even now having seen both prefer the tap out ceremony. However because Scouts, etc were getting to rough (ie what they called hazing or so I am told) they had to change it. Yes I have seen some that were way to rough and something needed to be done, and yes some Scouts did get hurt even broken bones. At least that is what I have heard. So I do understand why the changed but still .... if you know what I mean... Anyway back to my original thread - I am still looking for resources to help teach our Scouts about hazing what it is, and what it can do. For example I recently heard a story about a girl that was hazed so bad she committed suicided, supposedly it was in all the papers at the time. Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org

When I was a Webelos den leader I generally had them become a Patrol in the 2nd year, however it doesn't really matter if you do it in the 1st or 2nd year. You should also be thinking when and how this can be used to encourage them to move into boy scouts. It is something like less then half of all cubs cross up. Off top of my head I don't know the real numbers but I am sure some one here does... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org Helping leaders one resource at a time...

We got back a week ago from summer camp, at which we had a bad problem with hazing. I was wondering if anyone knew of a video similar to a time to tell or drugs a deadly game that we could show them. The problems were both with in the Troop and involved another Troop too. Also if anyone has any ideas on how we can farther deal with this issue, I would be interested in your ideas too. Thanks... Our council buys all the units the secondary insurance too. I have heard horror stories as well as good stories about it. My understanding it is only secondary and is suppose to cover what your own insurance doesn't. Kind of dumb in my humble option do the number of individuals in our group that do not have any insurance. Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org

Scout gains new insight from NYLT
insanescouter replied to gwd-scouter's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Radical so glad the course is helping so many Scouts ... We had 3 Scouts at our local NYLT and 4 more on staff. The course ended Saturday, Friday night 2 of our scouts were picked up taken to the airport and sent to the NYLE at Philmont. I pray that it makes a differences in our Troops program and orgnization - it is lacking the excitement and spirit it needs to be great... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org -
