Guys, I'm gonna lock this one. Feel free to start another thread back on the main topic. This has strayed away... -
Not going to Council Camp = Not Supporting Council?
hops_scout replied to hops_scout's topic in Summer Camp
Little more information for ya... Camp Joy (council camp) -constant staff changes -dining hall food (downright horrible) -waterfront lake is loaded with bacteria, slime, algae, etc -extra costs for shooting sports -COPE Course (a positive) Camp Sunnen (choice camp) -staff seems to change some, but they have some who have been around awhile -staff is excited to be there -more variety of merit badge options -mainly patrol cooking (two meals a day cooked in patrol) -excellent facilities shared with YMCA camp across the lake -huge lake that is clear -Climbing tower From the sounds of it, our SM may have been "drafted" to serve on some sort of committee to try and bring back Camp Joy. The facilities are a big hole for us, but the biggest thing is the patrol cooking. I think he might have also been asked to possibly join a committee in the other council on ways to improve their camp! Time shall tell... -
Leaders were talking about the troop structure and condition last night after the meeting. It was commented that it was about as close to a committee meeting as they normally get;) Anyway, the conversation moved to summer camp and high adventure. Apparently our SM and possibly our CC are recieving a lot of heat about the troop not going to the council camp. We have gone out of council the last two years to a camp in the next-over council that is just 10x better than our council camp. I've heard this summer was very bad for our council camp. The PLC has already decided to return to Camp Sunnen for next year. That will make three years in a row. The adult leadership is getting pressured to returned to the council camp. What can a council do to a troop who does not attend their local camp? Anything? Our SM was having lunch with the DE this afternoon and I look forward to hearing what he has to say about their meeting.

CA, I think you're missing the point of the clays being brought up... No matter where they were found, the clays were the big connection that led to the knife incident.
-
FScouter, that sounds like another violation.. I don't believe that they should be downrange on the shotgun range, right?
-
I think we need to start from the very top... "The incident appears have started over Clay targets. P, WT, S, and couple other boys found Clay targets off a trail earlier in the day. Each boy appears to have known how many clays each had. When clays went missing out of some of the tents Stephan was accused of taking them." So each one of them is guilty of stealing??? CA_Scouter does not mention why the clay targets were there, but it would be my guess, if they found several, that they were placed there for a reason. I highly doubt that reason was for the boys to pick them up and keep them.

Guys, on another message board, I have been asked about BSA Lifeguard. The poster has said that her son earned BSA Lifeguard at camp and she doesn't know what he can use it for.. I'm not sure, but I was thinking that BSA Lifeguard was considered the same as the Red Cross.. correct me if I'm wrong please...

When the "A" word would come out at our council camp, everybody would get up and leave the dining hall;)

Anyone notice SCOUTER.com speed improvements?
hops_scout replied to SCOUTER-Terry's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Yes, Terry, I have noticed a difference the last 24 hours or so. Thanks! -
Give me a few minutes and I will find a video of this.. I have seen it on a baseball website... http://www.veotag.com/player/?tid=47cfb7f4-55c9-41cb-8139-b41710faadab&pid=6c9b4a08-137f-4789-b012-e53f0c211e19(This message has been edited by hops_scout)

We have now gone exclusively to the 4-man Timberline Outfitters. We bought 15 last year alone. We kept a few of the Tentragon dome tents, but those only come out for canoe trips now in order to protect the Timberlines. We get them at a very nice discount!

Eamonn! I ain't leaving. I'm staying with the troop and will register as a ASM here in the near future. I've been requested to work on staff at the council camp as well as at the camp that the troop is going to. I think I'm gonna just go with the troop for a week instead this summer. I definitely want to go back to Jambo in 2010! That was the best time I've ever had. Maybe you should sign up for staff in 2010 and you can help us throw people off the tower. -
I'll agree- it isn't a very smart question. But the response of "I'm an Eagle Scout" woulnd't be a satifactory answer for me. I've seen some Eagle Scouts that weren't Scoutlike. Don't get me wrong, being an Eagle Scout is a great thing as long as you live up to it. But just because you are an Eagle Scout does not mean you are better than someon else who may share similar values but isn't an Eagle Scout.
-
Fox, I'm pretty active in Scouts and I would have asked the same question. That's because I have experiences with Scouts that weren't so honest.

OGE, please don't quit your day job.. your family still needs to b making something;) Beaver, don't forget the WIFI in the new tents and packs so the Scouts can stil access SCOUTER and MB.net! And heck, get rid of the citizenship part.. it's slowing people down and it ain't cool anymore either(j/k) -

Beaver, I'll run with ya! -
I have served as a JASM for almost 18 months. Basically I have played the role of an ASM with the obvious exceptions. Summer Camp was where I was able to best benefit the troop, IMO, because I was playing the role of the 3rd adult almost. I was in charge of making sure the Scouts were getting medicine and proved vital when a couple became homesick during the week. Serving as JASM has been beneficial to me as well for a few reasons. First, it has allowed me to be active in the troop while not having to be there every time. I play 3 varsity sports as well as am active in some school activities. Also, this will allow me to easily transition into serving as ASM and being an adult in the troop.

Once again I am bumping this up. Guys, we've got a group of 4 or 5 that come in nearly every night from across the country. We'd love to have more. Lately we've had people from the following places: -Nevada -Nebraska -Alaska -Pittsburgh, PA -New Jersey -Central Illinois -Southern Illinois -Michigan Please come on by!
-
AK-Eagle and I are in right now. There will probably be a couple more coming in throughout the night. Please feel free to stop by!
-
E, how am I supposed to throw you off the tower if you're not there?!? In all reality, I don't know that I'll be there either. What Eamonn said is right though. The best time is probably Jamboree and it's tough. I met two or three that I previously knew online.
-
Just wanted to give this a bump so more people would see it. I don't have school tomorrow so if anybody's interested, I'll probably be in late.

Those of you who have been here awhile know that we would frequently invite others to a chatroom hosted by MSN Groups. Well, MSN has done away with the chat in the Groups so we haven't done that since early this fall. I am here tonight to offer you a new place to chat! Copy this link into an address bar and go to the site: http://home.comcast.net/~bobwhite90/scouting.htm Next, you'll need to download the software that you'll find at the first link on the page. Then go back to the Scouting page (linked above) and follow the directions on there. If you need help, feel free to PM me. I will be able to help a little bit, and if I can't get it, I'll push the question on up to the top;) We look forward to seeing more of you in chat in the near future. PS--I'm in there right now!!

Barry, I like the idea of the weekly meetings, however, I think the meeting needs to have some structure more than a week in advance. If you're going to bring a guest speaker in, one week may be too short of notice. I think the PLC should meet maybe once every two months to plan the meeting topic and such. Then, each week make sure the meeting a week or two in the future are planned out.

SSSCOUT.. About 4).. It is difficult, but it is doable. I have decided not to finish my Eagle. I think the "busyiness" factor played in a little bit, but not the main reason for me to make that choice now. I'm a 3 sport varsity athlete, Honor Roll student, and a Junior Assistant Scoutmaster. Sure the Eagle Scout being on my resume would be useful, however, I pride myself in not doing things specifically for a reward or an award. At this point, I have come to the conlcusion that finishing the Eagle requirements would go against those values. I know several of you Senior Forum memebers that have been around awhile (has it really been 4 years that I've been here?!?) will be disappointed to hear that decision, but it's one I decided I needed to make for multiple reasons. Anyway, back on topic, I just wanted to make the point that I could tell you what it's like to be a "17 year-old Life Scout" at this point. For another 3 months.
