  1. Ed, I hope you're not suggesting each individual county is its own council. You know how many councils we'd have? Now how do you plan to do Jamboree allocation? Philmont? I can tell you in the county I live we'd be a real small council. And we're one of the fastest growing in the state and I believe in the country. We'd have: 1 Venturing Crew 1 LDS Boy Scout Troop 4 Boy Scout Troops Probably 7 or 8 Cub Scout packs What about council properties? How do you intend to do that one?
  2. "Obama has promised "change"...if that's what we want?" Isn't that what all the Democrats are promoting? I've already seen signs and billboards with the "Change. Vote Democrat" and such on them. What I can't figure out is what in the world are they going to change? And how do they plan to do it? Are they going to "change" just like this Democratic Congress has done? Because if you'll remember, that was their mantra to get into the majority in Congress. We were going to see "change" and yet Americans as a whole hate this Congress more than they hate the President! It shall be int
  3. Its Me, For a time, the moderators did have that dinstinction under their name. When Terry brought on additional moderators I guess 2 years ago he went away from that. From what I remember, his reasoning was that the moderators are participants FIRST, and moderators second.
  4. Won't play for me.. I just get a black box..
  5. "5. Don't hang stuff from the outside of the pack!! Dont't know why, but lots of Scouts seem to do this. Then gear starts banging around and falling off." Kenk, read your #2 and I think you'll find your answer. Besides, if you hang it off the pack like that, you'll be able to get to it quicker;) I too will agree to check out Alps Mountaineering. I just got one of their internal packs and a backpacking tent. My mom paid a little over 100 bucks for both of them combined! And the items are pretty solid too!
  6. You know Fred, I was thinking just the opposite! I couldn't wait to go back! Here's what I put in the Nationalbsajamboree2010 discussion over on Yahoo... I don't have experience going as a troop participant, but I went in 2005 as a staff member. I worked on the Rappel Tower D with Jerry. I really loved it; definitely worth it! Yes you'll work, but it can really be a lot of fun. And it can be very rewarding. I can remember two specific incidents on the Tower that stick out. The first one was a kid named Paul. Paul was as scared as he possibly could be. He just co
  7. Just think what would have happened had they cancelled early and then nothing happened. I can hear the moaning and b****ing about how they're wasting money and not giving the Scouts the activities they paid for. Yes, safety FIRST. But that's a tough call, IMO. If you ask some people, the heat we had at Jambo 2005 was enough to keep things closed all the time. So what do you expect them to do in that sort of situation?
  8. Well, and we'll see if the Army doesn't run the show from the very beginning this time. I believe Army personnel took over making Health and Safety decisions about half-way through last time. I'd guess they probably had input, but were leaving it up to BSA staff to make final call. But then after bigtime issues, I think the Army took over the final decision..
  9. Goldwinger, I don't know. In our school district, all of the "health techs" are RN's.
  10. Yep Ed, it is sad. Meanwhile, on the medicine storage issue, I'm not sure what the best answer is. I wish I had a good one to give
  11. "Whatever happened to being responsible for yourself?" Sorry Ed, that just cracked me up. What happened to it is that "it's someone else's fault" has come into play. That's why there's massive amounts of lawsuits, etc Goldwinger, one difference between the schools analogy and the scout camp is that while a Scout is at camp, he is there 24 hours a day. Meanwhile, that same person is not at school 24 hours a day. But the schools (most?) have decided to regulate the medicines that are in the building. You send some to school; keep some at home.
  12. I was waiting for somebody to copy the bit about "imitation of military uniforms." Camouflage doesn't equal military. Why people think that I never will fully understand.
  13. Well around here, if you use your real name it's possible you'll get sued.
  14. Yeah packsaddle, it did seem to give choices, didn't it? To go with your "I don't know" I have decided I must go with the shortstop.. "I don't give a da##" :):) Classic
  15. Hearing Tim Allen's voice as he says "Huuuuuuh?"
  16. Sorry guys.. gotta go with Roberto Clemente... a ballplayer and a giving person.
  17. "Actually under the old law 16 year-olds had the 12:01 am curfew and 17 year-olds had no curfew. Under the new law both have an 11 pm curfew. Safe Ride drivers had to be at least 17 with 1 year of driving experience so they wouldn't have been in violation of the old law. However, the old law also limited the number of passengers for 17 year-old drivers to one person under the age of 20. That said, Safe Ride's practice of providing a navigator under 20 years-old for the driver providing the ride home to a client was potentially illegal under the old law (depending on the age of the client)."
  18. John, that's good to know. Thanks for sharing. Now the question is whether that is good or bad for the country? That's a tough call..
  19. Could he be blaming some of those deaths on lack of funding which caused a lack of proper equipment, lack of healthcare ability, lack of support? Because Clinton was real good about that. That's why we're still flying 25 year old fighter jets! Clinton cut the military nearly in half during his time in office. Sure, he balanced the budget, but he also threw us in far into debt when the next president decided we needed to defend our country. For this, money had to be spent on research and development as well as expanding the size of the armed forces.
  20. John, here is an article talking about the Marines allowing it on certain bases for special events such as the Marine Corps' Birthday. http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2007/05/18/news/top_stories/1_04_525_17_07.txt This appears to probably fall under what you stated. With a quick search, that was all I could find. Like I said, I had heard about it but didn't know details. Here is an article about a Wisconsin bill that would allow for it. This article does not have much information. http://www.wisopinion.com/blogs/2005/11/drink-up-soldier-under-age-no-problem.html
  21. Statistics avoided by mainstream media By Kevin Hardin Tuesday, January 8, 2008 1:37 PM CST Statistics can be sliced and diced to validate many points of view. I was given some recent information I thought I would share. Anyone familiar with my point of view know I've been a supporter of the war on terror and our presence in Iraq. I understand loss of life on both sides of a war is inevitable and appreciate those who have made the ultimate sacrifice defending our country. But I also understand you cannot have the top military in the world without the sacrifice of many ta
  22. Our troop is sponsored by the VFW. We have a meeting place, a storage room, a storage shed that a couple leaders put a new roof on a few years ago, and allows our trailers to sit on the property. I think we pay for the majority of the stuff we do. They help us out on occasion I believe. We do flag ceremonies for Veterans' Day, Memorial Day, and maybe a couple other times a year. They like for us to be there at these types of things with them.
  23. Beavah, your example of the co-worker having one too many and getting a ride is different than these teens providing a ride for other teens who consumed alcohol. Your co-worker (I'm assuming of course) is allowed to have alcohol. The teen, by law, is not. As for your 19 year old soldier example-- in several states (not sure which) I have been told it is legal for that 19 year old soldier to drink alcohol with his fellow soldiers ON BASE. Like I said, I don't know particulars for this, but I have heard of it.
  24. Sure was, and unlike OJ, I was WAAAAAAAAAAAY out of my council area! Like I said, I knew only the director and that was only on meritbadge.net! But I loved it, and hopefully I get to return in 2010 to hang around with Action Center D Rappelling once again!
  25. I worked Youth Staff in 2005. Greatest thing I've ever done! I was there and I only sort of knew one person when I arrived. Here we are two and a half years later and I still keep in contact with a few of them. If you or your son wants to ask anyting specific captainron, shoot me a PM and I'll send you my email..
