  1. I know of a few Venture Crews in my area and plan to join one in June or soon after. It sounds like a lot of fun.
  2. How could you use den chiefs regularly?? If they are there, they are ready to help in ANY way needed. I, sometimes, do nothing at all at meetings and other times I am running around wild.
  3. I will make it real simple, Sparkie. There was a thread in another category talking about that. I think it was condsidered if it is a tool, then it would be allowed, but if it was a toy then it wouldnt be allowed.
  4. I dont know where you are located or where this camp is at, but my sister did some canoeing at a Boy Scout Camp in Georgia somewhere when she went down there for a Girl Scout thing a couple of years ago.
  5. I dont know how many nights of camping I have at this time and I have been in for three years. I think that troops should try to do camping as many times a year as possible. I know in November we dont camp because we do Scouting For Food two Saturdays in a row and then you have Thanksgiving too, so that is the only month we dont camp. I think if we camp outside in the winter, we usually camp only one night. Otherwise, we will usuallly camp two nights.
  6. Last year about this time we were going to do this as a troop activity and was denied the opportunity. Somebody mentioned no "War Games". Does that eliminate capture the flag?? Also, can troops do go carting? That was another thing we werent allowed to do.
  7. Dan, that is very true. You need to store the bottles in a good storage area. It can't have acces to the sun either.
  8. LauraT, what is the URL of your website?
  9. We did water rocket in Science earlier in the school year. I will see if I can get this information from my teacher at school tomorrow.
  10. Be Prepared for what? ANYTHING!! Are you prepared for what may be another attack on the US?? Do scouters really need to take the advice of the govenment to prepare? I think they should already be ready for just about anything.
  11. I think that if we go to war with Iraq, it will be for the best. I think Bush has enough sense (and then some) to wait until he knows it is time. He also wont pull out like Clinton did from Somalia. Clinton could risk almost two hundred lives one day, but the very next pull them out of there. 18 American Rangers were killed in the city, with another 70 some wounded. I think Bush will not allow it to happen that so many people are killed or wounded and then just pull them right out.
  12. One quick thing, fancyfelines I really dont see the need to sleep in a cabin during summer camp unless you live in the artic or something, but there may be other reasons you didnt say.
  13. I got a blue backpack last night. It was 85 dollars at Sports Authority. The top of it comes off to form a waist pack for side trips. Thank you for your help.
  14. The Current River is not really that much of whitewater, but it is fun. Our troop does it each year twice. We do it once in the summer as a family thing and in October as a fall float. It is a lot of fun. I can get you more information if needed.
  15. There is an easy way of fixing that. Get a warm sleeping bag. I bought a bag rated to 5 degrees right after Christmas for 40 dollars. We did have the heat going at our cabin, and I was on the top bunk( where the heater was:() so the bag was way too much for me that day. It should be just right this weekend though due to us having snow on the ground.
  16. Our troop went camping last month at Camp Sunnen near Potosi, MO in cabins. I dont think we had any kind of barriers between the adults and kids, except one mom who was there. She had her own room. This coming weekend we are going camping in tents. This will be in the snow. We got about 4-5 inches yesterday snowing nonstop almost all day.
  17. Ooops.... I meant my multitool is an offbrand name.
  18. KS, Where could I get a copy of the Backpacker magazine? It sounds like interesting reading.
  19. I carry an brand name multitool similar to a leatherman, but much cheaper. It has been fine for what I use it for. I also have a small knife with a bunch of gadgets on it that I carry near my multitool. I have a pouch in which I can carry a mini Maglite, head band for it, sharpening stone, flashlight, compass, multitool, small knife and sometimes other things. I will carry that with me on most things I go on. I also have another, slightly bigger, pocket knife with about four gadgets I think that I carry when I dont have my multitool.
  20. Actually that website is completely done by two scouts. No help at this time came from any adults.
  21. Check out our new troop site http://www.boyscouttroop323.bravepages.com
  22. I found the one I am getting as long as it is still there next weekend. I went to The Sports' Authority across the river this afternoon on the way to a swimming event with the troop. We found the one I plan to get. It is an internal frame pack. I just wish it didnt cost as much!
  23. Last three years we have gone to Camp Joy near Carlyle, IL. It was one where you went to the dining hall to eat all meals. It is in the Okaw Valley Council (okawbsa.org). This year we are going to Camp Sunnen near Potosi, MO. We will cook in patrols for breakfast and dinner, but go to the pavillion for lunch each day. I cant wait.
  24. Thanks. I am not sure what I am going to get yet. I saw an internal frame for about 70 bucks on the sports authority website. It had about 4092 cubic inches i think.
  25. It sounds like a great idea to me. Our troop doesnt do things like that, but I wish we would. I think a lot of things we do get pretty boring, but your ideas sound like fun. Good Luck with your troop.
