This thread got thrown off-place with the very first line of the second post: "Ahh, PR -- the magic bullet." If you'll reread the opening post, it mentions nothing about PR, but about ways of getting publicity and putting Scouting into the public eye. I do not believe that qualifies as PR.

"new" is a person with less than like 20 posts. "Junior" is a person under like 80 posts. "Senior" is everyone over 80 or whatever. I'm not positive on the numbers, but they sound about right. Also, I do believe they are probably going to be gone.

I thought I'd open this up to you guys because we need ideas. In the Sports over Camping thread, we've found that Scouts dont get much publicity. Let me know what you guys think and then I'll chime in later.

Alright, so as I started earlier... Somebody had mentioned that we, as Scouts, dont get the publicity that sports do. That is totally true. Last night my sisters were watching some show where a girl's mom goes through like 3 guys' bedrooms looking for a "good" guy for the girl to date. Whatever... One boy's room was completely spotless. It looked as if the room was cleaned every 15 minutes. She opens up his closet (very little privacy on the show) and what's she find? A Boy Scout uniform; recognized instantly. Turns out, he's an Eagle Scout. He's got this medal and a bolo tie hanging in his room, etc. She finds his laptop and starts looking at the history of where he's been, etc. What's she find? Apparently hard-core porn. That is the publicity that I've seen for Boy Scouts of TV for as long as I can remember. He looks great, sounds like a great person. He's still a boy! I can honestly tell you I have looked at it.. I wont lie, but I sure didnt stay on that site long. How can we get the word out more? Tell ya what, I'll start a new thread spun-off of this one so we can post our ideas.

No acco, you're not wrong. I agree with what your saying for the most part. Go to www.cornbreadshow.com He is on WIL 92 in St Louis. He's doing a "Adopt a soldier" thing right now where you can send stuff to the troops. I'll direct you to this link (hopefully it works) http://www.rpages.net/hops19/man.htm I believe You look around that site, and you'll find that I support the current soldiers as well. I'll come right out and say it for those who dont already know it-- I play 3 sports at the high school level. I'm a Star Scout. Several of my friends are getting their Eagle Projects completed. I have found that most who end up quitting Boy Scouts will quit sports as will. And vice versa. My brother is guilty of that. We cant catch them all. Right now, our SM is afraid our troop is dwindling. We're working to find out why. I dont think it is sports. We are working to get out of this "Mr. Jones Show" and get it run by the boys. I am going to turn it around. I've been elected ASPL so I will be SPL in 6 months. I'll add more when I've got the time, but I've gotta run for now.

What is the most important thing you have learned so far?
hops_scout replied to Eamonn's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I think that probably one of the most important things I've learned through Scouting is Service to others. Whether it is helping to rake leaves or laying your life down for your country and its freedom. Another thing which I rank up there with the other is patriotism and what "Old Glory" really stands for. -
.... and some gave all. Thursday is Veterans' Day 2004. This country is at war, but not a normal war. I realize I've asked this before, but I shall ask again: Please pray the men and women who have, are, or will be in the Armed Forces of these United States "I'm just trying to be a father, raise a daughter and a son, be a lover to their, everything to everyone." "I dont do it for the money, there's bills I cant pay. I dont do it for the glory, I just do it anyway." "I just work straight through the holidays" Our troop recently lost a Veteran to cancer. I do not know for sure, but I would say that he probably got the cancer from the fact that he served in Vietnam. Many soldiers in that time, it appears, were smokers. He was one of them. Sergeant Allen Braswell was a leader in Troop 323. He served in Vietnam in the US Army. After serving his term overseas, Mr. Braswell came home and worked for the US Postal Service up until the day he died. He was laid to rest in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetary in October. Please share your stories as well. If you have pictures, I would love to receive them to place on my website in tribute to the Bravest. Duty-Honor-Country

Bob, what you said about not cutting up the union is not entirely true... It is only to be cut IF you cut each star out. Chances are , that wont be done very often.
-
Showme, I've just skimmed your post but from what I saw, they cant do that!! Your SM cannot delay advancement b/c they are not wearing the uniform all the time. You cant add or delete requirements.
-
Alright, let's stick to the sports uniform.. For starters, they are not "universal" otherwise they wouldnt be a team uniform. Next, I believe you missed my point. What I was trying to say is that if the catcher decides he wants to wear a white shirt instead of black because it will be cooler in the hot weather, that would make their uniform incomplete. It would look sloppy. While I agree that we should have a uniform built around our activities, that just isnt possible w/o going to several different uniforms. Hey, guess what,$50 a pop already is almost too much. Having 3 or 4 or more of those that you need to have is going to send a lot of people away from the program. A Boy Scout uniform is meant to be extremely SIMILAR around the country and other areas where the Boy Scouts of America have programs. If other Scouting organizations want different uniforms, thats their choice. Call me weird, whatever, I just dont see the need for multiple types of uniforms. I also dont really see many things wrong with our current uniform. Until you can get 100% of the group to like one specific thing, you are going to have people complain.
-
But if you vary the uniform, then it is no longer a uniform. Ex. and I'll use sports for once;) --Everybody wears pinstripe pants, black socks, black belt, black t-shirt or long sleeve shirt (player preference), and sleeveless jersey. Now, because it's hot, the coach makes the jersey or the black undershirt optional. Is it still a uniform? Can the catcher rightly not wear one of those shirts while everybody else does?
-
I can only think of one thing I would change to the "Field Uniform" that is currently worn. I'd change the pants from what we have to Olive Drab BDU pants. I think they would be better because they have cargo pockets and it would be a very slight change so they wouldnt have to go totally redo everything. I personally like our uniform for the most part.

I, too, have a million email accounts E. I've got 2 gmail accounts (can give away some if anybody's looking for one), Yahoo, Hotmail (trying to get away from it), and a couple more that are unknown to most. I'd say that other than Yahoo, I check my email accounts 3/4 times a day if possible.

National supposedly does sent out a postcard to any application that they receive. -

We called the Scout office. The guy in charge of it wasnt there, but the secretary gave us his number. When we did get ahold of him, he said that we should have received something from National already. He said he would call down to Texas the next time he was at the office. He called today and said that apparently National didnt get it or something so he faxed them another copy. Hopefully, we hear something soon -
Yes, I'm around;) Its great to know that people actually ask for my advice for web development though I'm just an amatour;) I do not know how to set up a passworded section, but I will tell you this: There's always MSN and Yahoo groups you could use.

I dont know what he's actually thinking, but I understand what he wants done:)
-
I havent read any of that thread. But, yes I know what you mean. I'll check that thread out too.
-
He had a Ranger/Venture Handbook, Venture program binder with at least a hundred papers, and one other book just sitting out on our patrol's table.
-
The "program materials" he was referring to was actually just Venture stuff. Little update-- We are working to reserve a spot at Blue Ridge Scout Reservation for next summer. 5 days of White Water rafting. He has found a ASM that is willing to advise the patrol. Our SM said that he would love to advise the patrol, but he of course has other things to worry about. He, the SPL, and I talked last night for a few minutes about what he wanted to see, etc I've been elected as the new ASPL. In 6 months, I'll be the youth leader in charge of running our troop.

How long to process staff application?

I'm starting to get worried about my application too. I sent mine to my council in late August/ early September and I still have not heard anything. I hope to hear something soon. -
Save me a couple spots. May find a couple:) And I'm possibly interested depending on other commitments.

I wish;)
