  1. Since it is a "Venturing Scout Crew" it might just be an ad hoc group of people who want to keep active and are using the Venturing model but have not real affiliation with BSA.
  2. Hey, I'm serious. The only reason that I want to someday attend Wood Badge is so that I can join the MacLaren society and "legally" wear the MacLaren tartan as my kilt.
  3. "I wonder what was the law he violated? I actually have a CWP for Pennsylvania and the ease with which I acquired it led me to believe that PA was friendlier than that for firearms. Maybe it had something to do with his previous convictions (convicted felons possessing firearms?)" Federal law prohibits most felons from simply possessing, let alone carrying firearms. Even if his previous charges weren't felonies, drug issues would preclude him from getting a "permit to carrry a firearm" in Pennsylvania.
  4. "I'm always a little wary when I hear that it's "State Law" that requires people not do give any care." You may be right but I'm not going to call the guy a liar and I'm not going to look into it. Many state laws make no sense. Many local laws make no sense. Heck, there are even federal laws that make no sense. In my kids' school system, the schools have an exemption from the requirement to have fire extinguishers available. That's according to both my lawyer and the local fire chief. Only the janitor has access to them.(This message has been edited by Gold Winger)
  5. " As if the price wasn't bad enough, the "Made in China", added insult to injury. American patriotism has gone the way of new world economics, even in BSA." Woolrich Jac-Shirts are being made in China!
  6. A MacLaren kilt with a sporran made from the fur of his woodbadge critter.
  7. I still have my Wolf card from 1967.
  8. " and even fly in the airplane that takes skydivers up, eh?" Only if you have an approved BSA Flying Permit. "All motorized speed events, including motorcycles, boats, drag racing, demolition derbies, and related events, are not authorized activities for any program level" So they could drive during practice laps.
  9. Ah OGE, that goes beyond well beyond science. Ever go sailing? Flying? Shooting? Work in a foundry? Serve in the military? Outsiders decry jargon because they don't understand it but a specialized jargon allows people in an activity to communicate clearly and concisely. Overuse of acronyms just makes things quicker and serves to confuse outsiders even more. A mixture of terms from a variety of sources that mean something to some people and some mean something else to other people. cold shot bolter squib luff jibe ADF VOR threshold low side flyer bolus pit clean rope
  10. There was a recent discussion about WFA because BSA is requiring it for Philmont. The basics of first aid are always the same (clear the airway, stop the bleeding and treat for shock) but WFA covers how to deal with situations when you're miles from anywhere and you might have to improvise stuff. I don't believe that it covers stuff like what usually runs through you imagination when you hear about the course like "Emergency amputation after bear attack." A week ago, I would have been astonished that you wouldn't have been allowed to use any first aid if the opportunity presented itself at camp. After all, if there is an injury, applying first aid while sending for help can save a life. However, last week at my gym, for some reason a group of us were chatting about CPR and helping injured people. One member is a retired school bus driver who said that under stat law, he was not allowed to do ANYTHING. All he could do if a student was injured was move the other students to one end of the bus, call it in and watch the child bleed out.

  13. Since most of the girl scouts in my experience don't bother with anything other than the vest or sash, this really isn't a big change. GSUSA keeps trying to change based on what the girls who aren't members say. Then those same girls say, "Well, duh! I'm not going to join anyway."
  14. I believe that all states recognize osteopathic physicians (differentiated from allopatic physicians) and license them as "physicians and surgeons." My doctor is a DO and an Eagle Scout.
  15. Remember, the local Scout shop staff are just that. Scout Shop Staff, not that there is anything wrong with that but they don't always have all of the knowledge.
  16. Actually, lightning has been known to strike as far as 20 miles away from the point of origin. If you can see it, it can hit you.
  17. "Scouts aren't allowed to drive NASCAR either," Citation please? I spent my time in a dojo and I've never seen a "demonstration" which didn't include getting the "audience" involved. It is highly unlikely that the instructor won't say, "Okay boys! Stand up and do . . ." Of course, Beaver, you've already shown that you believe that the G2SS is only suggestions and contains no real rules.
  18. No, that was Ed. I'm not edjumaketed enuf to use werds like "context."
  19. I think that just about any question is fair game at a BOR for any rank. It gives you an opportunity to see how the boy reacts to unusual situations. "Do you prefer rock to Bach?" is okay by me. "Did God make the West Nile Virus?" is also fair game.
  20. Too many in Scouting say, "Hey, it's for the boys and it about having fun. Why worry about the rules?" Oddly, they never say that about soccer or basketball or football (although they rarely know the real rules of those activities). The parents that don't understand why the boys need to tuck their shirts in are the same ones that want their boys to look like MLB players in the 3rd grade. With regards to appearance, if you don't take pride in your appearance as a Scout can you really be taking pride in your activities as a Scout? Other rules? Most have a reason. We may not know the reason but usually someone thought it out. Now, I'll admit that I've broken a few rules in my day. For example, my campaign hat is currently sporting a Scout badge from Thailand. Otherwise, I'm for following the rules and the program. To go back to the sports analogy . . . if it is about having fun, then we ought to let kids pick up the basketball and run with it. Hey! It's fun and it's about the kids, right? Sure, it might be having fun but is it basketball? The same is true of Scouting. You might be wearing a Cub Scout uniform but if you aren't doing Cub Scout activities then it isn't Cub Scouting. You've run into a common problem in the Scouting universe. Parents who feel compelled to "help" but don't see the need to play the game by the rules. As far as awards, Scouting says that when you earn it, you get it. However, you're right about the generational thing. Too many of today's parents don't understand why Johnny shouldn't get the same badge as everyone else even though he didn't do the work. Or they think that if your son did the extra work, he shouldn't get the extra badge because it will make their boy feel "bad." I could continue to rant but I have to go to bed.
  21. Never forget that the streets are uneven when you're down or that when you're strange, faces come out of the rain and when you're strange, no one remembers your name.
  22. I have to put on my G2SS hat and point out that Karate is not an approved activity for Scouting. Judo is but not karate.
  23. That's what I did. Actually, I had to burn them onto a DVD because there were so many.
  24. Why I don't like nylon. It isn't "green." Cotton, wool, or rayon come from renewable resources. Nylon doesn't. It melts. If it is light enough to be "breathable" it isn't durable. It is useless as a bandage. For the record, I don't think that the little surface area covered by patches on a Scout shirt will affect the "breathability" too much. I have a feeling that the new uniform, despite the hype, will be as a big of a failure as the current one and some will like it and others will hate it.
  25. Elvis collar? It's a pretty standard open collar, much like the Marine Corps wears with the short sleeved khaki shirt. So now you're saying that Marines look like Elvis? Sheesh! Clown colors? Other than the fact that they messed up the colors of the loops (should have matched the service stars), what's the big deal about red? We're not Rangers or SEALS. Deer are color blind so they can't see them. Stalking and hiding have been taken out of the program so hiding isn't important. Thanks for the secret DSL number. BTW, as long as I buy a shirt that fits, I never have a problem breathing no matter what I'm wearing.
