"Roberts Rules are not taught in High School much anymore I gather." They weren't in my day. " could identify when to use or what "Call the Question" means." Even in my geekiest days, I wasn't geeky enough to care and . . . I'm still not.(This message has been edited by Gold Winger)

"Sigh. What a poor understanding of parliamentary procedure." Sigh. I'm quoting from Roberts Rules of Order. Lah me, another Scouter who can't read.

I don't buy the "once it is signed" bit. If you know that the either the counselor or the Scout committed a deceittful act then the card is invalid. What if there was a counselor who, if you gave him $50, would sign off on a merit badge with no work being done? Would you accept those cards once the fraud came to light? Not I. The same is true for rank advancement. Mr. Smit signed off of Johnny's tent building requirement even though Johnny wasn't there. Do we accept that? Nope.

" I always thought they were pretty goofy looking, and it was easier to just wear a troop-colors sweatshirt underneath the short-sleeved uniform." I always thought that it was easier to buy two shirts.

". Well, as my Scouting days come to a close, I won't be investing in one. " Why are your Scouting days coming to a close? -
Wyoming ArrowCorp5 cancelled because of Rainbow Family
Gold Winger replied to ScouterJoe's topic in Order of the Arrow
"The Rainbow Family of Living Light, sometimes known as the "Rainbow Tribe", is an international loose affiliation of individuals who have a common goal of trying to achieve peace and love on Earth." I guess that explains why they attacked a bunch of Rangers. -
A Caution about Wallyworld Compasses

Interesting. I've seen "military style" gear that I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole or even a 6 foot Slovak. However, I always assumed that "mil spec" stuff that I saw in catalogs was produced to "MIL STD XXX-YYY" just like issue stuff. Live and learn. -
"You have the right to be served in a restaurant, sit where you want on the bus, go to school, attend a place of worship of your choice." Hmmmmmm . . . not always.

"The old shirts and bottoms are made of outdated polyester, not today's efficient synthetics." Outdated? My "wicking" t-shirts are all polyester. And who can't forget Qiana nylon from the disco era. What's old is new. As for the socks, mine never bothered my toes. I guess they are making seamless socks. -

So "mil-spec" isn't really "mil-spec" as I'm used to using the term. -

A Caution about Wallyworld Compasses
Gold Winger replied to GaHillBilly's topic in Equipment Reviews & Discussions
In my experience, all mil-issue stuff is made to "military specifications" or milspec. I used to have a copy of the milspec for a pencil, it was nine pages long. I used to work for a company that made special electronic gadgets for the Navy. We had a closet of milspec parts that we used for prototypes, For lab work we used regular parts from Digikey or Radio Shack because a regular resistor would cost a quarter and a mil-spec one would be $3 but when we made one to send to the swabbies to play with, we had to certify that all part were mil-spec so thats when the closet opened up. -
Sheesh! I guess you do need an EASL class.

I find it amazing that the Chinese cannot make a decent compass. " military issue lensatic, not milspec." I'm confused. Wouldn't a military issue compass be milspec? -
" Most leading psychologists and psychiatrists believe that we are all on a continuum of sort wrt to sexuality. Nobody is 100% straight or 100% gay. I know most don't like to think of it in that way but who am I to argue with the experts." I think that the psych community is still trying to convince us that being homosexual is "normal." That process started when they "decided" that homosexuality was not a mental illness. If I'm not 100% heterosexual, I must be 99.999999% heterosexual because the idea of having sex with another guy just gives me the creeps. Maybe the .00000001% comes into play because I don't mind shaking hands.

"4. Make sure all of the COR's are there. They are the only ones who represent the Units to the District and Council." In six years of serving on District Committees, I have never seen a COR at a meeting. Never. Oh wait, I'm wrong. There was a COR who was also a SM who came with his son who was giving a pitch about something. Yeah, that's the one.

"I think most families are like Gonzo, there is no way that he would let his son go camping with gay adults. I think most of the country would agree. I don't think there is a market for Gay lead troops, it would be interesting to try." Why? We let boys go camping with just women as leaders. Doesn't it bother parents that they're sending their fine young men off into the woods with middle aged women and we all KNOW what they say about middle aged women. As much as I disapprove of the homosexual lifestyle, I don't think that the world would come to an end if homosexual leaders were allowed. Which homosexuals would be applying for membership? The guys with no attachments that cruise the strip at night looking for "love" or the fellows who have kids and came out of the closet? In the end, it would always be up to the CO. Sorry, you're a drunkard, we don't want you. Sorry, you're a suspected drug dealer, we don't want you. Or, sorry, you're a homosexual try Troop 1234, they're more liberal.

I don't know if you need to go with "Roberts Rules of Order" (Who was Robert anyway?) Actually, according to my summary of RROO, they have no place in a Scouting meeting since they say "The conduct of ALL business is controlled by the general will of the whole membership - the right of the deliberate majority to decide." which isn't the way that Scouting works. Agenda. Gotta have that. With short times for each sub-committee head to report. Avoid discussion of minutia. Let the sub-committee decide details like color of napkins or if the camporee patches will have a frog or bat on them. Have the sub-committees break out for discussion of their particular projects. Heck, they can even have their meetings at another time and place.

I got to wondering . . . where the heck do you plug in all of these extension cords? Every camp that I've been to has limited electricity. Usually only in the office and dining hall. Has anyone looked at all of these extension cords with an eye to fire hazard? If your line gets too long, the line itself starts drawing a considerable amount of current and will overheat which can cause problems. BTW, when I was young we used to camp out in an active volcano. Now you want to talk about hot! Of course, at that time most of the surface of the planet was still molten.

"They're only trying to help you. You really don't need them, which you will discover when you actually get a copy." Hmmmm . . . it always worries me when someone says that I don't "need" to know something. Strange things grow in the dark. " how many of us know about scouters who had their BSA membership revoked because he/she did not follow the BSA Rules and Regulations?" Just like "1984," when that happens, all records are obliterated and no one mentions that person again.

"Hey I've been here for 25 years and I'm still speaking English." At least you and your kind are expecting stores to put up special signs for you.

When they started making the shirts overseas, I didn't see a dramatic drop in price.
