  2. Hah, got here first OGE (This message has been edited by a staff member.)
  3. Not buying any uniform would have even less impact on the pocketbook. If you buy a second shirt for $35 and the Scout gets two years out of it, that's about $1.50 a month. If you're paying for unlimited text messaging on your kid's cell phone, that's about $10 a month.
  4. " I finally put the seed into their head that something as simple as don't break the law is part of their "duty to country."" Considering that this country was founded by law breakers isn't that an unreasonable expectation?
  5. "Much as I might take issue with how others spend their money, it's not my call to tell a parent that" That may be true but I really get tired of the whining about "we can't afford this."
  6. [deleted] FScouter (This message has been edited by a staff member.) Hah, he beat me to it OGE (This message has been edited by a staff member.)

  8. Your Scout Shop people really need to read what BSA publishes. I quote from the BSA release about the new uniform "The high-performance, multifunctional new shirts and pants run the gamut from looking good at ceremonies to getting out therehiking, camping, and getting involved. Loaded with pockets (some big enough to hold your Fieldbook), zippers (converting pants to shorts), gadget loops, and more, youll want it all! However, each piece transitions to mix and match with your current uniform."
  9. If you want the truth it's time for the bright lights and rubber hoses.
  10. "Easier maybe, but less of an impact on the pocketbook to buy one short-sleeved shirt and wear it over a long-sleeved undershirt in the winter" We've been over this before. I knew a woman who frequently complained about the cost of Scouting, later she told me that she had spent over $400 for her son's high school ring. Talk about sill expense. I know no one who wore their high school ring for more than a couple years after graduation. $100 a pair for sneakers, not to play basketball but to walk around the street. $35 for a Scout shirt, that's too much. $400 for the new game console but $120 for a decent pack is too much. $50 is okay for a new video game but for boots they go to Wal-Mart and get the $40 pair.
  11. "The second harm is one that Merlyn may not be concerned with but I am. The second harm is the one that my son suffered when he was a member of an organization that excluded some of his buddies, not to mention some really great potential leaders, on the basis of a belief system." To you I say, "Go and form a club for your son and his buddies and protect them from harm."

  13. Only 76% of the day is, from right before 6 AM to midnight. Why 6 AM? Because that's when the kids start waking their parents up.
  14. Actually, there is no reason that it can't because there exists at least one system in which it does.
  15. Well, it should be the concern of the CC :-) but that moment has passed. Talk to the District Commissioner.
  16. Do it that way if you want but the guys in the ninja suits will descend on your house from their black helicopters and you'll vanish, never to be heard from again.

  18. Ah ah, now moderators function as a thread police to prevent thread drift.
  19. Only 9,992 the other seven have already PM'd me to find out what I wanted to say.
  20. ""parliamentary procedure" is just too much of a mouthful, and many of us say or type 'parlypro' to short things." Those who use jargon when outside of the official jargonized group are . . . well, I won't go on to save FScouter the trouble of moderating me. (This message has been edited by Gold Winger)

  23. Och, everyone knows that haggis is eaten with Scotch!
  24. It isn't cool to be nice so BSA is trying to shed their nice guy image. No more helping old ladies across the street, now they'll push them into traffic. No more looking for lost kids or cats, now they'll kidnap them and hold them for ransom. New advertising slogan, "Wanna be a thug? Join the Boy Scouts!" I find it comical that they keep harping on the shorts. In 1980, that's what we wore, shorts. I wore rugby shorts until I got too chubby to be seen in them. In 20 years, the boys will be looking back and saying, "I can't believe we wore those goofy long shorts and pants with our underwear showing." (we can only hope). 25. "EMB knows what he's talking about and I seem to recall he's a member of the National Association of Parlimentarians." Wow! That's something that I want to aspire to! Then I could say "parlypro" too!
