Brandon, Welcome to the camp fire. I feel your pain as I have seen this kind of thing bring down a great program... One reminder, what you post here will still be on line long after the problem is solved.

Again, there is no "unless" clause in youth protection. At the end of our meetings two adults leave togeather after all youth members are gone. Your logic is like saying that if you only had a two seat truck it would be ok to let the boy ride in the bed. It is not. If you train a boy to think exceptions can be made how will he know that it is wrong when Mr. X offers him a ride home? If it's ok to be alone with youfor a " counseling session", maybe it's ok to stop by Mr. X's house when you've had a bad day. After all, he did offer last week when he drove me home. Abuse does happen! Give the boys the tools they need to protect themselves.

"If a Catholic troop takes their boys to Confession with the IH, it is almost by definition one-on-one behind closed doors. A scouter may take a tearful boy into a room so as to allow him to regain his composure out of the sight of the boy's peers; another may opt to drive home the lone scout left at the meeting because his parent's car broke down. Should these all be immediately smacked with da YPT brickbat? I'd say followin' regulations isn't always the right thing to do. " Beav, I'm a live and let live kind of guy. If you wanted to pass out eagle badges to first year scouts I could care less. BUT YOUTH PROTECTION IS NOT AN OPTION! Every time a SM tells a youth that it is ok to make an exception he is putting that scout at risk. Socouts in my troop are taught that all exceptions are to be reported to me and their parents.

my error. Should have read the questions myself before replying.

Fine point on Catholic terms: "the Resurection, the Last Supper & the Immaculate Conception" I'm not familiar with the patches and questions, but I expect this should read "the Resurection, the Last Supper & the Nativity" The Immaculate Conception refers to the event that precedes the birth of Saint Mary who was "conceived with out sin". The Catholic church teaches that Saint Mary did not carry the stain of original sin like the rest of us.

Quoting from 11/09/2006 " I have just created a web site where scouts can create treasure maps" Were you full of bull then or now?
-
"People apparently buy and sell treasure maps that take you on 2 to 3 hour adventures" apparently??? Isn't this your website in the first place?

You'd be doing yourself, your son and the troop a favor if you left. As long as you stay no one will step up to be the second. Maybe your leaving will wake them up. If not, maybe it will kill the troop so the boys can go out and find a real troop.

oops, I had cut a few lines from my original post and then didn't re read it.... I was sugesting that a spotter could/should be required in the truck pulling the float. A timely shout of "STOP" could make all the diferance in a case like this.

Accepting Tips on How to pick a Charter Organization.....

A busiiness can be a CO and many are. Problem is that unless they form a tax exempt foundation your troop is just an other business unit. Donations to the troop are income to the CO. Purchases by the troop are business expences. Talk to a CPA (or such). -
In no way judging the actions of any one involved.... In waterskiing we are required to have a spotter in the boat watching the skier(s) while the driver handles the boat. and atleast in my boat the spotter does not take his/her eyes off the skier... Maybe we need that kind of rule added to GTSS? Prayers and thoughts go out to all involved.

Dear Slightly Cluttered: Invest in your future. Hire a maid for six months until you can marry this woman. Then she can keep the house any way she wants while you camp. (sure hope my wife never sees this)

Does anyone have a nice simple survey?
frank10 replied to cmckean's topic in Open Discussion - Program
We keep track of who's what in our troop to be sure to support the families by getting each scout to the right service at the right time. )or back home in time to atend their own church, temple or what ever). Also want to know for special food requirements -
"And sure as shootin' some overly officious snot will tell him he can't share a tent with his best friend who's 3 months younger." Ok, now I have a new title to add to my profile. Am I the only one who belives that YP is not optional.

Funny, 30 pounds ago I'd get the meat loaf bit too. I'd be sitting some where minding my own when I'd hear some one humming a few bars from "anything for love", I'd just grin back. Now that Ive lost the weight I don't get it any more. 15 years ago my first date with my wife was to see Meatloaf at the New Haven Place. Next month we will be at his show in Foxwoods... can't wait!

FYI: -35 degree Celsius = -31 degree Fahrenheit so it's all about the same.

How often to "renew" youth protection?
frank10 replied to queenj's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Memory say's it's 3 years but since we host one at my house every two years I've never had to be sure. And since my wife cooks up a storm of food and snacks for it EVERYONE attends with out nagging them. Best way is to check the date on your card. If you can't find your card, It won't hurt to take it over any how and then you'll be all set for the next 3 (or is it 2) years. -
" 7 - 10 year olds may not understand why their 40+ year old leaders are crying like little girls seeing Old Glory go up in flames." That alone is reason enough to do it. What better way to teach them than by showing how important it is to you. (BYW: my three year old knows enough to stand when the flag comes down the road. May not know exactly why but she stands up right next her daddy same as I did next to mine) On the other hand if it is turning into a game and play time then it's not working, move on for a while and come back to it next year.
