"Was Juris right?" That's like asking if the voice you hear at the drive-thru at the local taco shack is right. You can't understand a word of it, you just wait until it stops talking at you and then drive on to the window. You take what ever is in the bag and smile nice.

With the way they have lowered the standards for this badge the only way they could make it easier would be to let you to use a pencil to poke the holes in the target.

Best thing we ever did was assign some one other than the SM to deal with all discipline issues. Any time there is a problem the boy was sent to the that SM who was away from the group to hash it out. Took all the fun right out of acting up. Hard to disrupt the group when all the SM has to say to you is "go see Mr. B." Only other "rule" we have is that getting hit first is no defence for hitting some one. Too many scouts thought it was "self-defence" to hit some back after the fact. the two items above broke the cycle a few years ago and now we don't even think about it any more. Can't remember the last time a boy took a shot at some one.

Is 'Outdoor Method' the ONLY way Scouting works?
frank10 replied to madkins007's topic in Open Discussion - Program
You could base it on all sorts of things, but you would still need a place to do it. That's where the camping comes in. And if your going to camp, you will have to learn to be comfortable doing it. And then, well, your back to the outdoor program. Unless your going to rent out a hotel and confrence rooms camping is the only game in town (well, out of town, but you know what I mean.) -
In the camps I have attended, coffee is't banned for youth, it just isn't provided. If you'll forgive me.... It's an adults only perk. It's no diferent that the snack we get at the daily SM's meeting. It's what we get for giving up a weeks vacation (along with the mug). If a troop/patrol/scout wants to provide it in site, that's up to the troop/patrol/scout

Most of this info is for the background check. I understand you concern but this information is not optional. Time to pick, in or out, it's not going to go away.

How long before some one notices that we have a whole lot of tax free churches right down town and ask the question "couldn't we close just one"...(This message has been edited by wingnut)

Hi all, thought this might be a good time to share tips for staying safe at camp... One idea I like is to wrap your water bottle with ten (or 20) feet of orange surveyers ribbon. It is to be used in case you are lost... hang it in the tree you are hugging so you can be found even whiler you are sleeping.

My own personal rule is that no one rides in my car with out their uniform. I may not be able to tell them they can't go, but If they are not in uniform I'm not obligated to drive them.

Yes, IF it was truely " unscheduled/free time " However, just because the scout has free time does not mean I do and he may not have any idea why I can't/won't work on it at that point. Also, I need time off too.

Who would clean up behind them? I think I'd rather step in what the horses leave than their mess.

Think before you act. There is a good chance you won't like the outcome of any action you take. The COR has the option of sending you packing... he doesn't even have to say why. He could fold the entire unit. He could simply quit leaving it up to the IH to replace him or fold the unit. Not much chance of a good outcome unless the IH agrees with you and even then it could be messy. Keep in mind he is a member of the CO... are you? No matter how many times they vote, the mice can not elect a new cat.

Would he fit in as ASM of the first year program (or one of two ASMs) Or may be he could work with the QM? My worry would be can he take and retain the youth protection training? He may be a prime canidate for causing him self a heap of trouble by hanging out with his old scout buddies.

Hamlet (II, ii, 115-116) "What a piece of work is man! How noble in reason! How infinite in faculties! in form and moving, how express and admirable! in action like an angel! in apprehension, how like a god! the beauty of the world! the paragon of animals!........Man delights not me; no, nor woman neither, though by your smiling you seem to say so." On the other hand, I found this defination: piece of work (Noun)- a product produced or accomplished through the effort or activity or agency of a person or thing; So maybe it would refer to some one who is spouting the party line...? (Ok, back to the original dead horse, resume the beating)(This message has been edited by wingnut) -
"Especially if the adult and Scout were familiar with each other, a judgment call may exist. " "Because I knew this Scout and his family very well, I was his Tiger through Boy Scout leader, I was comfortable with my decision." "IF" an adult were out to do harm to a youth, this would be exactly the method he would use! I assume he trust you with verry good reason. However, does he know the diferance? If you tell him it's ok because you know him, will he think it's ok when another adult says so? The best thing you can do for him it to teach him that even with you the rules still apply... That way when some one tells him otherwise he will know to come to you and report it. Any exceptions put the youth at risk!

For the first time in about 25 years I sat on the side of the road and watched the parade rather than marching. Great show... Lots of Vets, Jr.ROTC, marching bands from all over the state, police (wearing kilts and playing the pipes), explorers, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts right down to tigers, Girl scouts of all ages, church groups, little league, cheerleaders, several ethnic clubs, the garden club and a dance studio all marched to show respect for our fallen heroes. Funny thing, didn't see a unit from the ACLU. they must have been busy some where else.

Based on what I have read, the young man would first off be missing one camp out. Not so much as a punishment, but to allow the other scout a chance to get comfortable with the troop again. Next, we'd have a long talk about what he wants out of scouting. as part of the talk, we'd develop an action plan that fit both the problem and the scout. I'd let him be the guide between punishment and redemption... More time away or time working for the food bank. Also, we schedule a follow up talk or two until we both felt we had managed to put this behind us. Assumed is that he would pay for all damages and make things right with the other scout.

When we had this problem with drivers we discovered that the answer was to place our trust in the boys. Told the patrol leader that each patrol was expected to provide it's own drivers. If we arrived in the parking lot and there were enough seats going anyhow, we'd let the parrents off the hook but they were to be there anyhow just in case. If a patrol doesn't arrange for a driver, they don't go (never happened yet and I don't expect it ever will). Try the same logic for troop meetings. Each patrol must have one adult at the meeting of they can't enter the hall.

Son's first campout as a Boy Scout
frank10 replied to ScoutMomAng's topic in Open Discussion - Program
not sure what he could have done, but here's a few ideas we use to be sure this never happens... 1) cooks are served last. 2) no one eats until the cook offers a grace. 3) we always have BP and J in hte patrol box. Also, I think our youth leader are well trained enough that they would let us know if this were a problem. (And the adults always have extra.)
