Wood Badge Course Changes
Eamonn replied to dancinfox's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
emb021 Much as I would hate to be seen to split hairs. But the Cub Scout leader Trainer course was a course for Cub Scouter's and as such was a Cub Scout course. Eamonn -

Wood Badge Course Changes
Eamonn replied to dancinfox's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
It has been a tiny pet peeve of mine that before the 21st Century course, when people talked about Wood Badge they didn't seem to remember that there was also a Cub Scout course. A participants ticket had to be all about training and was to my thinking the most difficult ticket to work. I admit that I do check out how many beads a person wears!! But if we were to do away with the third and forth bead, I wouldn't be upset. You can't wear Wood Badge beads on Sea Scout uniforms anyway. Shooting the breeze with some of the good old boys in our Council, they seem unhappy that we are not spending enough time on teaching outdoor skills. Much as I hate to say it they may have a point. Of course they want to see the Boy Scout come back. I think that we might need to add another Boy Scout outdoor skills training, something like Powder Horn but for Troop leaders. I am not for mandatory training and while I do think that training and training's go a long way to improve what we serve and how we serve the people we serve, it seems to me that everyone has a different reason for taking training. Some get shamed into attending, some go at it full speed ahead and want to get everything done ASAP. Some just want the recognition and some go for what might be termed all the right reasons. The Wood Badge course we have now is a good course on Leadership. I think that District and Council Training teams could do a better job with skill training and making people aware of other non-BSA training's that are out there. This might mean better lines of communication between the District Training Team and the R/T Commissioner Staff. Eamonn. (This message has been edited by a staff member.) -
Some people would see this as consorting with the enemy!! Many years back I went to Lords to watch England play the West Indies. I went with a few Scout parents who were from that part of the world. We had the best time. Right behind us a group that were a steel band were playing. India and Pakistan take the game very seriously, but the West Indies is just one big party. Of course the only reason we have the Ashes is because someone got a little upset. - I wonder who that was?? But going down that road might be a sticky wicket. Eamonn.

AND DID THOSE FEET IN ANCIENT TIMES (JERUSALEM) (Traditional English / Words: William Blake) And did those feet in ancient time Walk upon England's mountains green? And was the holy Lamb of God On England's pleasant pastures seen? And did the Countenance Divine Shine forth upon those clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here Among these dark satanic mills? Bring me my bow of burning gold! Bring me my arrows of desire! Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold! Bring me my chariot of fire! I will not cease from mental fight, Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand, Till we have built Jerusalem In England's green and pleasant land. If ever you find yourself with way too much time on your hands, you need to go to a Test Match (Cricket) and hear the English supporters sing this. By the way On Monday 12th September 2005 England won the Ashes for the first time in 18 years, having beaten the Australians 2-1 over the 5-match series and the English women's team also won the Women's Ashes, for the first time in 42 years. Now if we could only beat New Zealand in rugby the land would be even more pleasant. Eamonn.

Yipes!! I talk with an accent!! Or do Americans speak English with an American accent? I kinda like the idea that good old Saint Brendan the Navigator beat Chris Columbus to the new land. But then again there could be a few Vikings who might see things differently. While I'm not going to comment on what has been said, I do admit that I get a lot of these sort of E-mails, some come with photos of American Troops in Iraq - Never seen one with any of the other troops over there? After a while they just become junk mail or spam and I delete them. One guy was sending me a ton of them so I added him to my blocked sender list. The ones that really upset me are the ones that come with statements like "Don't Dare Break This" or make threats saying if you don't pass it on to X number of people something terrible is going to happen. Still my hair is already white and getting thin on top, Her Who Must Be Obeyed is stuck with me and most of my money is in FDIC accounts so I'll risk deleting them - Yes I'll show'em Eamonn.

I would check with the Council Registrar and make sure what options are out there, I think that there is a code for kids (Scouts and Venturers at college) What age are you looking at? Most people who have graduated and gone off to college are over 18, that being the case they could be on a Troop Charter as an ASM or if selected even a member of the Troop Committee. We have in these forums debated the meaning of active until the cows came home!! My feeling is that everyone does what they can, when they can. Is the Lad who is at college but works on the Troop web site active? I think so. I for a lot of years didn't attend that many OA weekends, I had to work. I still paid my dues and if asked to do something gave it very careful consideration before either accepting to do it or not. Of course a condition of membership of the OA is that you are a member of the BSA. It would be hard to be a member of Scoutings Honor Society, if you weren't a Scout of some sort. Maybe before we try and find ways around things we need to address them head on. Talk to the Scouts and explain that maybe they need to look at what they are doing, explain that the Lodge doesn't come first. Then if the Lad says that he is doing his best to be as active in his home unit as he can that ought to be the end of it. You can tell all the people who are asking silly questions to go take a hike. I can't do Lithuanian. But do know a Greek Orthodox priest who might be able to translate. He is a real character, plays a very spirited game of tennis and then has been know to polish off a pack of adult beverages and really likes some evil smelling prune brandy. After the prune brandy the translation gets a little spirited. I would offer to do it in Irish Gaelic, but the little I know is not for mixed company. I even have problems reading James Joyce;Ulysses and Finneganns Wake in Spanish? Now that would be something! Eamonn.

Wood Badge Course Changes
Eamonn replied to dancinfox's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Thanks , That's how I read it yesterday. But today the little gray cells are not doing so good. It has been hinted that I will be asked to help out as a QM at a course our council is hosting in 2007. I'm not sure if I will accept or not. I hope to be at the World Jambo in 2007 and hopefully by then the Ship will be ready to charter a boat and we can sail off into the sun set, or at least one of the Caribbean Islands. Staffing a course is a lot of time and hard work. Where I used to big just a lazy toad, now I'm finding that I'm a REAL Lazy Toad. Eamonn. Did they move the Diversity presentation to the first part of the course?(This message has been edited by Eamonn) -

Wood Badge Course Changes
Eamonn replied to dancinfox's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
So lets see if I have this right -??? I took the old Wood Badge Courses (Boy Scout in the UK and Cub Scout over here) I staffed both old Cub Scout and Boy Scout courses. I staffed the new course as as Guide and as an ASM. I served as a course director for the 21st Century Course and I'm done. I can't return to the happy land? While I can see that we never want to go back to the good old boys again, somehow only allowing someone to serve as a director and putting him (Me!!) out to pasture seems like a waste. I'm interested to know what has become of the day one Troop meeting now that Lunch is a Cub Scout event? Eamonn. -
I have been involved with starting new units at the district level for a very long time. I really have to admit that starting one for myself has given me a much deeper understanding. I tend to be like a bull in a china shop!Once I get an idea I want everything to happen yesterday and it seems that everything and everyone moves in slow motion. There is so much to do and so much that could be done, trying to stay focused is hard. At this time we are the only Sea Scout Ship in our council, in fact as far as I know we are the first in our council. This of course means that there isn't a go to person locally. The Region has been wonderful, they put me in contact with a super guy who knows a lot about Sea Scouting and has been a Skipper. He acts very much like a Unit Commissioner. The bad thing is that he is in Maryland and I'm in Pennsylvania. I'm driving him nuts with e-mails!! I would love to look into buying boat kits and the like but at this time we only have $150.00 to our name, the money that the Elks gave us to get started. We discussed fund raising at the meeting on Sunday, but only eight youth members it will take some time to raise a significant amount. We do have some ideas which I'm trying to delegate out to the people who have agreed to sit on the committee. However right now this taking them by the hand and guiding them. Talking to people in other Ships and in Councils that are near large lakes , rivers and the sea, I turn green with envy when they tell me that they are turning down donations of boats and old outboards. We are not near the water so people just don't have the stuff to donate. I have asked them to keep an eye out and let me know if anything comes along that we might use, needless to say if it's any way good they will keep it for themselves and I can't blame them. Holding the interest of the Scouts over the winter is going to be hard. We have what I think is an interesting list of activities that will get us through the winter, I need to really work on the meetings and make sure that they don't become a drag. I'm sure we will get there, but it isn't going to be as quick or as easy as I would like. Eamonn.

Mountain Run if we have the same one is operated by Bucktail Council. The Council has spent a lot of money on the camp and there is a lot of new buildings. I have to be a little careful what I say as the Council President is a pal of mine. The camping sites are mostly clearings in the woods. Sad to say they don't get a lot of summer campers - I don't know why? They do have some great winter activities!! But that isn't going to help you!! I have never camped there with a troop, but have staffed a Wood Badge course there and that was in 2000, so if they kept making improvements at the rate that they were - I'm sure it's wonderful !! Eamonn You might want to look at Camp Conestoga !! Westmoreland Fayette Council!!

We held our "First Nighter" yesterday, OK so it was at 2:30 in the afternoon!! We have 3 adult leaders and eight Sea Scouts, along with the makings of a strong committee. We have a full program up until March. Quarterdeck Training starts next week. I'm blown away by the enthusiasm that some of the Scouts have. Now I need to find a few boats!! Eamonn

shanve, I have to admit to thinking that something isn't working as it should. Your involvement at the unit or several units should have nothing to do with your serving at the District Level. A DE can not make anyone a District Member at Large. It doesn't work that way or at least it shouldn't!! You really need to get a copy of District Election Procedures (7 30176 34511 6) The AGM of the District is the Annual General Meeting, this is where Members At Large are normally voted into office. In a nut shell and you do need to read the BSA material!! The District Nominating Committee should meet and come up with a list of Officers for the following year. A vote should be taken to vote the list into office. The people who are allowed to vote are: COR's of units in the District. District Members At Large and Council Members At Large who live within the District. District Committee members do not have a vote unless they are also members at large. I'm an outgoing District Chairman my term ends this year. I didn't have a vote my first year, then the Council made me a Council Member At Large which gave me a vote. I don't know if the Council Nominating Committee will offer me a seat on the Council Executive Board, next year or not. This year I will be elected as a District Member At Large. Eamonn.

I really hate the idea that a little fellow can be called an Unwanted Webelos Scout. However if things are as bad as you say, I make sure that the Pack Committee and the CO (COR) understand the situation and are willing to support any action that is taken. While you don't have to I would also keep the District Key 3 informed. I have had upset parents call me (As District Chair.) They tell their side of the story, which at times is very different. I of course tell them that there is no way I can or will interfere with what is going on in a unit unless it is something that harms a child or is against BSA rules and regulations. Still if I know what the situation is I don't end up saying something wrong. Heck I do a good enough job of looking like an idiot without any help. Eamonn.

"an alternative to the BSA for those who choose "
Eamonn replied to Eamonn's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Kudu, Once again I'm puzzled !! I hope that your comment "Be sure to add "Produces Scouters who make personal attacks" to the list of "What's Wrong with the BSA" is not directed at me? However if you feel that I have made personal attacks on you please accept my apology. I may not and in fact do not like where you stand on certain things that have to do with Scouting and the BSA. But I don't know you well enough to make comments about you as a person. I also disagree with my brother about British politics. I know him really well and know his good and bad points, still we can spend hours telling each other that he is wrong. I do not have a problem with anyone who wants to go out and serve or start a youth organization. In fact if they are really unhappy with the BSA and the way it does things, they should leave. You are right when you say that: " McDonald's is just one brand of burger making." Still if I go and ask for a Baked Potato, which as far as I know McDonald's don't serve, they will not be able to help me. Then the choice is mine. Do I take the fries? Go to the other Fast Food restaurant that does serve Baked Potatoes? Or decide that I can live without the extra calories. One thing that I know isn't going to happen is that McDonald's isn't going to serve me a Baked potato. Maybe if enough people write to the head office or enough people complain McDonald's might think about adding Baked Potatoes to their menu. This might take some time. They might need to find suppliers who can supply the right type and size of Potatoes, they might need to find the right sort of equipment to bake the potatoes. Then they would need to train their staff how to cook and serve the potato.By which time some Health Organization will say that Baked Potatoes cause warts and everyone in the world will stop eating Baked Potatoes (Apart from me, as I happen to like them.) As for my relationship with UK Scouting. Please allow me to share to little story with you. Back in 1977, I landed myself in a lot of hot water. I had visited the USA for the first time and had come over to work as an International Camp Counselor. I spent ten weeks working at a summer camp. At that time International Camp Counselors didn't get paid. But the BSA laid on a bus tour of the Eastern states. When we got to Philadelphia someone from the press asked me what I thought about American Scouts. Of course at that time I had never been exposed to the "American Summer Camp". I was used to summer camp being the Troop Camp of the year. The idea that kids arrived to tents that were already up and ate meals in a dining room, where the meals were cooked for them was totally and completely foreign to me. So in answer to the question, I said that I thought that the Boy Scouts in America were a bunch of softies!! This hit the news wire and when I got home letters from some very upset BSA Scouter's started to arrive. The International Department at Baden Powell House were not very happy. Looking back I now see that I was wrong. No. I still don't like Summer Camps, but I can now accept that this is the way things are done over here. I have other things that I may see as not being as good as they were in the UK, but I'm not there and I now see it is a case of "When in Rome.." There have been a lot of changes in the way that the Scout Association is doing things. I was only a little Lad when the Advanced Party Report came out in 1969. Sure I know of adults who seen the changes and said that they just couldn't accept them and quit. I served on the Service Team at Walton Firs National Camp Site, with some people who before the changes were in Rover Scouts, these guys were good they had mastered outdoor skills and had a great love of Rovering. But there wasn't a Rover Scout Program any more. At least not at a Scout Association National Camp Site. Sure these guys could go and meet with the Rovers that were meeting on the Lower Richmond Road and yes the land lord of the Kings Arms was happy to see them when they came in wearing the outdated Rover Scout uniform. There was even a picture frame with Rover Scout badges and stuff hanging on the wall. Of course these guys are now old. Few people in the UK remember Rover Scouts and the Scouts in the program today don't care. They are in Scouting for fun and adventure. The last time I was in the Kings Arms on the Lower Richmond Road, the picture frame was gone, there was a band playing grunge music and the young crowd were drinking bottles of Rolling Rock beer, which they thought was really cool. It's brewed just down the road from me and when I owned a couple of bars the young people thought that drinking Bass Ale was really cool. Eamonn. -
A pal of mine started a new crew about this time last year. He said that he only wanted 20 youth members to start. The year went well. They came up with an activity every month. Some activities were well attended while others were not so hot. This year he is taking the membership up to 70. It is safe to say that at this time this is all about him. I don't know if in time he hopes to allow the crew to decide what size the crew will be or not? I'm not sure if this should be up to the youth members? He is happy working within his comfort zone and from what I'm seeing he is doing a good job and the members had a great time last year. 70 might be too many? We will have to see what happens. Eamonn

Hi Jason, Welcome to the forum. Congrats on Vigil Honor. I gave up trying to second guess or even understand why committees do what they do do a long time ago. While I have never sat on an OA Vigil Honor selection committee, I have sat on committees that have selected District Award of Merit and Silver Beaver recipients. The thing that amazes me is how few people send in nomination forms!! Then what makes me smile is when they complain that so and so didn't receive the award. Eamonn.

Well, golly gee Eamonn, how long does it usually take you to organize something like that? I have never given it a lot of thought, I'm happy to deliver and support the programs of the BSA. However if I was unhappy with the uniforms and the programs of the BSA, I suppose I could set myself up as some sort of Scouting Guru, write a new set of rules and regulations and hang out my shingle. Of course I would have to tell each and every youth and parent that this program was not a BSA program, that we would not be using BSA material, not using any of the BSA resources and we would not have any of the insurances offered by the BSA. Without the insurances I think I would have a hard time finding an organization that would be willing to charter or sponsor this new unit. Still there are other "Scout Organizations" out there that are happy to have people both youth and adult sign on and do nothing but complain about how big and bad the BSA is. If that was all I wanted to do? All I would need to do is set up a web site. Has every WOSM organization discarded Baden-Powell's Patrol System? I have no idea. I am a member of the BSA and follow the programs of the BSA. It seems simple enough to answer: a) No, Kudu, we don't use Baden-Powell's Patrol System in the UK either. Or, b) Yes, Scoutmasters still appoint the Troop Leader (SPL), and that is why we lost the British Empire. As I have stated I am a member of the BSA and really don't care what is happening in the UK. I did notice that they no longer list Patrols as a method and I do know that they no longer use Patrols on the UK Wood Badge course. As for the Empire? I think we ran out of cricket bats and the tea outside of England left a lot to be desired. Eamonn. (This message has been edited by Eamonn) -
"an alternative to the BSA for those who choose "
Eamonn posted a topic in Open Discussion - Program
I have to admit to being a little puzzled. Kudu posted: Hopefully we will soon have an alternative to the BSA for those who choose to operate today's troop on Baden-Powell's traditional Scouting practices. What I don't understand is why the wait? Hey, if you don't like what the BSA is doing what is preventing you from starting your own youth group? Eamonn. -
I have just got off the phone from talking to a very close and dear friend. We of course were talking about Scouting. Sad to say some years back we talked about individual Scouts, now days we seem to talk about money and the lack of it. Over the weekend I attended our OA weekend and the topic of conversation was again money. We were lucky enough to have a gentleman who was active in our Lodge before I was born!! His take on all of this is that it goes in cycles. I hope that he is right!! Still I seem to have this little voice inside of me that keeps telling me that something has gone wrong. My problem is that I'm not sure what? Over the years that I have been involved at the Board level, I have seen the money that we raise go up. In fact the District I serve is now raising 600% more than it was ten years ago. Still ten years ago we weren't doing a very good job. We all know how things have gone up over the past few years and I can't help feeling that we have been afraid to pass on the real cost of doing business to the people we serve. By not passing these costs on we were in fact subsidizing the people in the programs at that time and it seems that one day we will have to pay the piper and that day seems to be now. While I firmly believe that if you pay peanuts you get monkeys, I am starting to question the amount of money that we pay our professional staff. A school teacher in the school district where I live starts out at $22k a DE starts out at $32k. I'm finding it a lot harder to ask families who are struggling to get by to donate to FOS and help pay the wages of a SE who is making more than twice what they as a family bring home. Sure I'm aware that he brings in money from other sources, but wages and salaries now eat up 25% of our budget. Yes I know trying to make sense of the budgets can be hard as all sorts of wages are in there. By and large the volunteers and families in our Council do support the Council by participating in FOS and selling popcorn. I really don't want to see us cut programs or cut staff. I do however feel that the time has come for honest and open dialog with our professionals, they need to do more to get out and about and start looking for funding. We as volunteers are doing and will do what we can. But the time has come for them to start bringing home the bacon. Eamonn.
