  1. SO....Judge Silverstein has ruled on the Coalition's Substantial Contribution Payment and has decided they get....NOTHING. That's right, they requested the BSA pay what, $20 million for the lawyers and professionals to represent it when it tried to strong-arm a settlement that the Survivors voted down!? The opinion is below and it's a doozy. Basically, "you were representing a constituency that the TCC already represented.", "You took credit for everything and that was objected to.", "You told the Court when you wanted to become a mediation party that the State Court Counsels who made up th

  2. This has been debated previously and there are differing opinions. That said, organizations are responsible for both paid staff and volunteers. If an organization was so poorly run and organized to allow volunteers to repeatedly rape children, I do think that organization should be held accountable. In addition, there is evidence that BSA intentionally covered this up. While I understand society changed over time (background checks didn't exist in the past) I really struggle with the cover up that seemed to be occurring at national. BSA could have decided to fight this in court, but t

  3. Thread revival I'm not seeing too much different with the new medal vs the old, but it IS now available. National, if you're reading this, changes like these without explanation are what lead to confusion and speculation. Please be up-front about what you're doing and it will reduce this.

  4. Sorry, I don't check this forum as often. There are some wild variations in numbers between councils, with some being up 30% and others down similarly. Not sure if the official numbers will hit 1mil by year end.

  5. I found the materials on line that listed the individual cases and included the documents and I did read a fair number to get an idea of how serious the suit was and yes, it was serious but none of the cases I saw included any professionals as abusers (I certainly expect there were some, just not the ones I read) but mainly volunteer adults and in some cases adults that were not even registered but affiliated through the chartered partner or as a relative of a youth member. I would change my mind if you can direct me to the documentation that shows that BSA employees were the abusers in signif

  6. Listened to the argument. My thought (again who knows): Would uphold Purdue plan: Thomas, Kavanaugh Would reject Purdue plan: Gorsuch, Barrett, Jackson On the fence (or just tougher to read): Roberts, Alito, Sotomayor, Kagan Boy Scouts Plan was brought up and the DOJ indicated it may still be ok as appeals could be considered moot. I do think there is a lot of concern of what will happen if the plan is rejected and the DOJ didn't do a good job explaining that. So, I could see a path where they accept the plan and perhaps set a high bar on non-consensual releases.

  7. My vigil honor name translates to 'likes to talk', after this it may be changed to 'likes to write'... lol I'll make this 'personal'. I started as a professional in Penn's Woods Council out of Johnstown, Pa. I did my youth scouting in the Pittsburgh area. After 3 years I was promotable and went to New Jersey but had family reasons to return to Western Pa and Harry Mangle in Johnstown offered me a position with a considerable raise. My Scout Exec in NJ had me resign my position to accept the new post and then had the NE region block the move. I ended up going to the Pittsburgh Council wit

  8. You need to have your DE do this along with your unit commissioner and district membership chairman. They should be on board to assist, especially to save a unit. They need to know what your unit status is and they need to assist in helping turn the unit around!

  10. Not in the early 70's when I was abused. I heard that my abuser (BSA Camp Employee) was just a little funny that way. It was laughed off. So you go ahead and preach the Gold Standard, while I will alternate between crying and laughing. But you know what, OJO? I'm not here to debate. I'm here to discuss pertinent information on the settlement. Frankly, admin, I would like to see the forum stick to the topic at hand so the forum itself does not result in additional damage to any victim/survivor. Myself included.

  11. "Observation" means "no participation or interference" in what you are observing. Many parents can't do that.

  12. I do wish they ("THEY") would settle things for more than 3 years this time. Cubs have been staggering along, adjusting, creating, modifying, clarifying, the program seemingly every other year.... Back when the ranks made sense, morphilogically, small mammals to bigger more DANGEROUS ones, and literary references (Akela, Baloo) could be understood, and a DEN was a place for Cubs to live, and the PACK was to be run with I thought belt loops for arrow points were a good exchange. Now, the changes were coming because "we can" and maybe they will be good for the kids (wh

  13. If you talk to your scouts and parents you might find it went better than you think. Sounds like you are going to do fine. You learn by making mistakes. You will also learn the personality of your den the more you meet with them. Sounds like you have a very active bunch, as I did when I led Cubs. We had to run out some energy before we could tackle something as serious as Bobcat. Luckily the rest of the Tiger requirements are more active so they will be having more fun soon. Good luck.
