  1. Eagle, my ramblings aside, I forgot to say this in my previous: you've handled this entire situation as a true gentleman and scouter, with much more dignity and patience I could have mustered had I been in your boots. It's difficult to see a troop struggle, especially one we've invested so much in.

  2. On me. I knew about this so I did not proofread article, apparently the editor of that paper did not either.

  3. RS, thanks! Any confusion is strictly my own (old age, laziness, poor reading comprehension, lack of coffee)

  4. Boy, that article is a incomprehensible piece of gobbledygook. I could barely follow along.

  5. The BSA may sell parts of its art collection, for example, 66 original works by Norman Rockwell which had been appraised at $130 million. http://www.tribtoday.com/news/local-news/2019/01/donor-questions-butler-boards-decision-on-boy-scouts-collection/ Update: as others noted above link is confusing. Link below is clearer. http://www.tribtoday.com/news/local-news/2019/01/130m-art-at-risk/

  6. Actually took my Becker 21 to slice the line. Seriously, I really think the troop will fold within a year. SM, who is the reason why I stayed as long as I did and is the reason why many of the Scouts are with the troop, has had it for sometime. He came close to cutting off his SM patch and giving it to them on the FUBAR camp out. And now that his daughter can be in Scouts BSA next week, he is in the process of getting a female troop going for her. He has been trying for 6 or 7 months, and cannot get a female SM, so it looks like it is going to be him. Nobody in the troop is either

  7. What @qwazse said! Definitely help the SPL and the scouts. But the others? Take out your handy dandy Official Boy Scout Pocketknife and cut that rope and let them drift away. Life is too short. Folks like that will never, ever say "Gosh, I see your point of view." Sparing you the long story, I was an ASM in a troop in the '80s, and we had a similar parent. I recognize the vibe. She drove our SM up the wall. Endless letters and meetings never accomplished anything positive. She thrived, everyone else was demoralized.

  8. I'm shocked! Who would have guessed that all of that gory retelling would have inspired her to respond with equally copious self-justifying verbiage. On the other hand ... This young man ... the only person you need to answer to!

  9. It's really hard to assess strengths and weaknesses of the case at this early stage. In any event, more than 90% of civil cases settle. The only real question here is how long it will take (years, possibly) and how many millions BSA and GSUSA will pay their attorneys before then. GSUSA made its point just by filing its complaint: their organization is still around, still strong, and still fiercely devoted to girls only -- which BSA can never be. There's not much more they can hope to gain from an arcane trademark dispute, so it is just a money drain for them as long as it goes on. "Scout

  10. Well I sent the letter. I first sent it to the SM and the core ASMs, basically my friends who knew the whole reason for leaving, not the polite, but also true, "The new troop's meetings are a better night for us." Because of my meetings with them saying why I am leaving, the troop is in the process of reforms. But as you can imagine, these two families are ticked off and fighting it. According to the SM, they lost an entire Cross Over Den because of the new policy that only trained ASMs can go camping now. Personally I think the chaos the two adults caused on the camp out with them is the

  11. We had one patrol of older Scouts/young ASMs who had been together for at least 6 years, and most since Tigers. Summer after HS graduation, they took a train trip to Yosemite and went backpacking. they spent 2 weeks and had a blast one last time.

  12. My older scouts have very little interest in guns, not sure why. What they do like to do is to roll their own advetures so maybe encourage them to do a Patrol campout/ mini HA. We will do SeaBase this year and Philmont the next but it seems that they want more. I think they would love the mountaneering with the ranger school.

  13. You must send the letter in order to have any chance of closure. That way you will know that you have done everything that you possibly could do to help right the course of Troop XX. Not sending your explanation will bolster the Webelos 3 mentality, "I asked him for an explanation, and he never got back to me. So he must have had personal reasons." Retaliation? These folks have driven you from your home troop. What could they possibly do more?

  14. The BSA motion to dismiss focuses on two of the GSUSA claims: First, the claim that local BSA recruiting efforts that spread confusion and misinformation about girl Scouts / Girl Scouts interfered with Girl Scout recruiting and activities. BSA's motion to dismiss argues that GSUSA failed to identify any specific instance in which interference actually occurred, or in which BSA members acted with malice, dishonesty, or unfair or improper means: "The mere possibility of a lost recruit is not enough." Second, the motion addresses the claim that GSUSA has "common law" (customary and court-made

  15. Depends on what programs and conveniences interest your unit. We have camped at all three but have only attended a week of summer camp at Wanocksett (NH). Wanocksett has more elbow room, suffers less from suburban sprawl, as it is adjacent to Mt. Monadnock State Park. Tues night, there is a hike up Mt. Monadnock. I believe the lake is the largest of the three camp lakes. A new boat house and new boats. Some new bathrooms have been built. Rifle program does not suffer from MA laws. My understanding, Wanocksett still does not run a parallel Cub Scout camp as the other two do., b
