Being the new kid on the block I may not know everything but...I would not take the wine on a campout. If it was absolutly necessary I would do the no lead kind and put it in a different container. We did this last year when it was an event that was for adults and was cooked by adults.

I have bad visions of something bad happening at the camp and eventhough it was not involved the event gets blamed on the wine.

Can you just hear Little Jonny Scout telling Mom and Dad about the weekend. "First we got lost, then Billy pulled his knife on me, then Joe started a big fire. Oh yeah we also had wine in the patrol box."

As much as I like to cook with and enjoy it the fruit of the vine stays home.

A big simmering pot of pinto beans seasoned with hamhock. Fried potatoes, sweet cornbread and a big slice of red onion.

Heaven!

My dad used to mow the widow lady next door's lawn and she would send over a pot of beans or a pie from time to time. Her beans were different from everyone else's. I never got her recipe, but she did something to it to give the beans just a hint of sweetness. I've heard rumors that she put a can of Coke in them. I've experimented with sugar, but it was not the same.

OGE, the one I can't understand is fugu fish. Figuring out how to eat that without dying must have filled a cemetary somewhere. From a website, "Some say the delicate chickeny flavour is the main attraction; others insist that fugu testes in a glass of hot sake is the best aphrodisiac in town; others are partial to the warm tingling and slight numbing of the lips (the pleasant symptoms of systemic paralysis and ensuing respiratory failure)."

I'll have the carp, thank you.

Rooster, my wife claims that salt and grease are Southern allspice! :)

littlebillie, I hope you're feeling better...but to play it safe, for just a little while you'd better shy away from kwc57's hamhocks and beans. BTW, kwc57, I think there are a couple of other possibilities for the secret ingredient: molasses (maybe sorghum), or possibly some Blue Ribbon hops-flavored malt extract. These have often added a certain allure, a seductive sensation to the palate, yet not easy to place, like an old familiar sound or a long lost friend...

kwc57...save littlebillie's helping for me.

Po Boy sandwich covered in Garlic Butter!

I just was not ready for this thread to fade away!

Now the issue about cooking sherry on campouts. The issue would be the leaders that see it and say, oh it okay to bring alcohol on campouts, so at the next campout they bring their beer or spirits. This is probably how doing merit badges as a troop got started.
