  2. Welcome from the Texas Panhandle!!!!! Fred
  3. Never ever hold back something a boy has earned. The other boys could have earned it by now if they had also worked hard. Like it has been said, the other boys will be spurred on to earn it now. Eagle, I hold the same ceremony everytime a boy advances, no matter if I have to do them every month or not. The object is to recognize the boy when he earns it, not wait until it is convenient for someone. I feel that giving the boy the patch in a den meeting dims the meaning of the ceremony. Fred (just MHO)
  4. A loud "howdy" from the Texas panhandle, I'm from up north so I miss all the snow. But better you than me!!!!!!!! But Welcome!!!!!! Fred
  5. a big "howdy" from the panhandle of texas!!!!! Fred
  6. I have been asked to be the Cub Scout Roundtable Commissioner for our District. I cannot find much on the internet yet and was wondering if anyone could give me any advice or ideas about what I am getting into and what exactly my job will be? Thanks, Fred
  7. Try super wal-mart, I bought some purple duct tape for my daughter to make a purse with just before christmas. Fred
  8. Annie, I have seen an award called the "twentier" at our scout shop. It is a patch that they wear. I can find no reference to it in the books so I am not sure if it is something new or something old. But making your own award is always gratifying and the boys usually love them. Fred
  9. Trev, You are probably right, but we can all wish can't we?!!!!! Fred PS: I too like your addition of color!!!!
  10. A-lady You cannot order online from scoutstuff.org. What they do is let you shop and then you can print out a list and it will give you the addresses of stores and distributors in your area. One day maybe National will go to online ordering. Fred
  11. Locust, We are using the 75th anniversary theme as well. We are panning on incorporating the history of Cub Scouting. The Webelos are performing a "History of Cubbing" skit. The tables are being decorated like a big birthday bash, balloons, streamers, gifts (PWD car and Quality Unit Patch) etc.... Around the room the decorations are all about Cub Scout history. Old uniforms, blown up pictures of the rank through history, old Pack flags (including mine from when I was growing up), old manuals and so on. Let your imagination run wild and enjoy this opportunity to celebrate the 75t
  12. On ours we usually include nature activities. The boys just enjoy nature hikes. We have also planned and done track castings, fishing, cooking, star watches and marshmallow toasting. Just remember that it should be fun and they should be able to get credit towards something with everything they do. Fred
  13. Not Dead!!!! On our Packs trip to the newspaper plant last weekend, at least half of the boys had the cards with them. It was alright though it kept them quiet during the ride there and home. Fred
  14. Andy, Your situation sounds like the one I inherited 18 months ago. All I can say is hang in there, and keep the boys coming back. What I did was watch and see which parents were always there and willing to help. Then when I felt the time was right I dove in and got them signed up. Ensure that you stress to the adults that you need them and that you are only asking them to do one thing. When I took over I had 1 TL, 1DL and 1 WL and no MC. I was the CM and Wolf DL and committee for about the 1st 6 months. The 1st MC that signed on was my Outdoor Activity coordinator. He is st
  15. Twocubdad, Actually the way it works, according to the Cub Scout Leader Book and the Wolf book, is as follows: Wolf: only the electives can be used for Arrow points, not the unused achievements. Hope this clarifies the rules for everyone. CMF
  16. Welcome to the Wide World of Scouting CMF
  17. I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving from the Lone Star State! CMF
  18. Scoutnut, According to the Cub Scout Leader Book the Cubmaster plans and helps carry out the Cub Scout program in the pack. This includes the pack meetings. The Cubmaster also guides and supports Den Leaders. The Cubmaster is also the program advisor for the pack committee. He also plans the Den programs witht he help of the other leaders. The Committee is there to see that the Cubmaster follows policies and assists him, or her, in getting the materials needed to give the program. The committeee also coordinates between the CO and the pack. The Den leaders should go to the Cubm
  19. Welcome aboard fellow Texan!!!! I will laos let you know before my wife does that I am originally from NY. CMF
  20. BW, I made the same points before in this thread and you told me that the district and council are there for PR not publicity. Yet you tell eagle90 that if asked the district to publicise a good turn they might give him a different answer. My question to you is what does the district and/or council do PR or publicity?
  21. BW, The faces I refer to are the faces of the parents, boys and leaders of our Pack. The community will help the local unit more if they know who is involved. It is in this way that we get the help we need to give our boys the type of program they deserve. EXAMPLE: By putting the picture of our boys placing flags on the graves of veterans in the local cemetery, we are letting the community know we are here, what we are doing and that we are also about community service. Yes the boys get to see thier picture in the paper but it helps the unit in that more people and organizations know
  22. BW, I still cannot believe that you are dead set in your mind that the units cannot promote scouting themselves. This is the main way we get support from the community and recruiting new boys. Whether it is the paper, radio or just plain getting out there in uniform. I can't figure out what resources we would be wasting on this? You need to elaborate. I feel that a few minutes of my time to drop off some pictures to the newspaper is not a waste of resources. Or a few minutes to ask the owner of the radio station for some air time, or the principal to pass out flyers for recruiting, o
