  1. I have been assigned to a trading post somewhere! I got my patch in the mail over the weekend. My son is going to apply for youth staff. As far as I know, they are still in need of staff, especially for an event that big. ccjj
  2. Our new district advancement chair is putting together some new "suggestions" for our Scouts. He would like for all requirements, including BoR to be completed before 17 & 1/2. He is requiring full uniform, including MB sash at the Eagle BoR's. If a Scout cannot tell him about the merit badge he earned, he will be sent away to "remember". I can see a lot of appeals beginning... ccjj
  3. We charge $10.00 per month from Sept thru May. This covers registration, and most campouts. We do have one campout in Sept that we need to charge a little extra for because of how far away it is and what it costs the troop. Summer camp is not included in our dues. By spreading it out over the year, most families are able to come up with it. Popcorn sales go 1/2 to troop and 1/2 to person selling. Yes, we have adults that sometimes will sell also. The money earned from popcorn sales can be used for any Scouting expense. ccjj
  4. I counsel Personal Management, Family Life, Reading and Medicine. My 18 year old Eagle Scout son is a MBC for Archery, First Aid, and Emergency Prep. ccjj
  5. Our council has a limit of 8 per MBC. Personally, I am only a counselor for 4 at this time. My 18 year old son, is also a MBC for 4. ccjj
  6. Tigers are GRRRRRREAT! It's nice to see another TPC'er on here. Keep making it fun...with a purpose. ccjj
  7. The pack I am with is doing show N sell/deliver for the first time this year. So far, they have sold almost $700. Now the troop, last year I ordered show n sell popcorn and it sat in my dining room because none of the boys would make the effort to set up a show n sell. (the adults said it was up to the boys.) This year, 2 of the boys have sold almost $500 during show n sells. The difference? Both of them have little brothers in the pack, and their parents told them to get with it! ccjj
  8. Our troop gives out the badges at the next meeting after the BOR. The Scout gets called in front of the troop and recognized and given his new rank badge. Then, at the next Court of Honor, we give out the pocket card and recognize him again. ccjj
  9. ScoutMomSD....If you ever are near the Marine Corp Recruit Depot out that way, give a wave to my Eagle Scout son who is in basic training. Welcome to this virtual campfire. Hopefully, you will learn lots like I have. ccjj
  10. As far as I know, MBC is a district/council position. So, therefore you must be listed as available to all Scouts. But, you don't have to work with any Scout that you don't want to. If a Scout calls you, just say no if you don't want to work with him. I have been a MBC for over 3 years now, and have only gotten calls from 4 Scouts outside of my own troop. And these 4 boys, I just happen to be friends with their parents. ccjj
  11. I applied thru the national site for staff a while ago, and am still waiting to hear if I have been selected or not. Our council has 2 troops and applications are starting to come in. They are looking at an estimated cost at around $1500 - $1800. ccjj
  12. We had our sign up night last night and almost doubled our pack! We signed up 8 new Scouts, 7 who are Tigers! Add that to the 4 new Tigers we signed up in the spring, and we are at a whopping 16 boys! Plus we had a couple of families that took apps home and said they would bring them to the first den meeting next week. Now, we have 11 Tigers, 2 Wolves, 2 Bears and 1 Webelos. We lost a several boys to a neighborhood disagreement last year and that hurt our bear den seriously. ccjj
  13. As a staffer and director for several trainings, we (as staff) are charged a $5.00 staff fee. This is mainly on our overnight trainings such as Jungle Book and Cub Scout Outdoor Training (a combination of BALOO and WOLF). But also for University of Scouting. We pay either a $5.00 or $10.00 staff fee to staff our cub summer camps and day camps too! ccjj
  14. Our council here charged $75.00 per person for Webelos Resident Camp. Camp ran from Thursday evening until Sunday morning. ccjj
  15. We do it as a one day during University of Scouting, and as an overnight course. During the overnight course, we do lots more hands on things with the boys. Teaching them different games and tricks to work with. ccjj
  16. We sing a version of the Grand Old Duke of Yorke... The nobel Captain Kirk He had 1000 men He beamed them up to the Enterprise and he beamed them down again And when they're up they're up and when they're down they're down and when they're only half way up they're nowhere to be found ccjj
  17. OMG...we sang Road Kill Stew at camp this summer. I learned it at National Camp School a couple of years ago. The kids really liked it. We sing "We're from Nairobi" and "Ging Gang Goolie" ccjj
  18. I also heard that a BSA plate for Michigan is in the works. That came from the SE of our council. ccjj
  19. I sent a care package up with a visiting troop to my camp staffer son. He had requested his belt too! I sent up some more personal care items such as shampoo and deoderant. Last summer he seemed to run out of some of the basics. I also sent him some bottles of Gatorade. ccjj
  20. I just finished our Webelos Summer Camp (Resident camp) and we had 110 boys and around 70 adults for a long weekend. We made sure to go over weather precautions and where to go in case of bad weather. We had a little bit of rain and wind, but nothing serious. All of our camps are down in numbers, but I think that is due to the economy. I spoke with many of the boys this weekend, and they are all looking forward to a week long camp next summer as a boy scout. Most of them had heard about what happened in Iowa, and weren't really worried about it. They know that weather can happe
  21. One 2007 Junior USA Shooting team patch is in the mail! ccjj
  22. My daughters troop last year was a multi-level troop. She was a Daisy, and there were 2nd grade Browines too. The leaders were a mother/daughter team. For the most part, it worked. Sometimes the Brownies were (as my daughter says) uber-hyper. They did help with the Daisys though. ccjj
  23. Actually, 1:1 is not a national camp standard for resident camps. The last sentence of M-35 states: The minimun leadership requirements of any Cub Scouting unit attending camp must meet the adult-to-boy ratio of two adults to a maximun of eight boys. ccjj
  24. Our Resident Camps have a 1 to 4 ratio, with a minimun of 2 adults. We do get many parent/child combos. If the unit can't meet the ratio, we will place them with another unit to help. I often get calls from units that they are having trouble getting a second adult, and want to send 2-3 boys to camp. As long as they ask and are up front about it, I will put them with a unit that I know has enough adults. They just have to be responsible for the boys they brought. ccjj
  25. My daughter just finished her Daisy year. She did bridge to Brownies, but was told she may have to be a Daisy again next year due to the restructuring of the GS program. ccjj
