  1. Always a great dedicated camp commissioner. just like what mn_scout desribed.
  2. Hi Basement, Sounds like this is the new guy's commercial or claim to fame. It's his slogan. I suggest you wait until the next annual council dinner in the spring. Get a hold of the annual report program and I would be willing to bet a nickel that there will be all kinds of bragging about improvements to the "program". Of course you will still be looking for these big changes. I could be wrong... Guess we will have to wait and see. Abel(This message has been edited by abel magwitch)
  3. Shortridge writes: Its participant numbers are also fairly small - 777,243 compared to 2,723,869 in the traditional membership There was a huge drop in LFL membership in 2008. In 2007, the LFL membership made up 38.5% of the overall youth served. LFL showed incredible growth since its inception in 1991 - up until 2007. Then for some reason, the bottom fell out. Since 2007, LFL membership has dropped by an incredible 65%. 2007 Traditional membership - 2,855,833 2007 LFL membership - 1,788,276
  4. You know SP, my council just bragged that it made gold. The council puts in their newsletter the individual units that made bronze, silver and gold, but never the districts. I guess I truly am part of a miraculous council ;-)
  5. SP,you asked about my district committee - Our district committee consists of: A district chairman who is never seen and no volunteer is allowed to contact directly, A training chair, An advancement chair, An activities chair, And a DE. Thats it. But hey, our district has always been a quality district when that program was in effect.
  6. Yes, a key 2. And the current district chairman was handpicked by the district director. Yep. And us pesky volunteers aren't allowed to speak or contact our district chairman without having the DD and DE screening what you want to see if it's worthy for the district chairman. In fact, very few have ever actually met the guy. For awhile before the DD found this district chairman, we had a key 1 which lasted about 6 months. Our former district commissioner quit because he was tired of the DD not telling him the truth.(This message has been edited by abel magwitch)
  7. I have a lady friend who is involved with an LDS Troop with her son. She is very active and enjoys Scouting immensely. Her troop chooses to cabin camp at summer camp. But she is not allowed to be in the cabin. Instead she is given a tent to sleep outside of the cabin. She told me she is not allowed to be in the cabin with the males.
  8. Unit commissioner? What's that? District commissioner - what's that. Roundtable commissioner? What's that? Units were told by former DE that roundtables were no longer needed. New DE has followed suit. Haven't had a RT commish for a few years. I think the last time we really had a unit commish was 15 years ago. I wish I could give you some positive feedback on this SP, but my district hasn't had a DC for several years now. As for a unit commissioner, its tough to have one of those without having a DC. Hopefully you do have unit commissioners that serve your units in your district

  10. And let's not forget Buddhism. From what I remember from college days is that the religion does not believe in a god. I may be wrong. Perhaps a Buddhist out there could enlighten me on this.(This message has been edited by abel magwitch)
  11. nldscout writes: Since BSA has made a decision not to change, everyone now has to make up thier mind, they have 2 choices 1. Stay and work with the youth while following the rules. 2. Leave. Its a simple as that On the contrary, they can join the Exploring program and be counted with the traditional membership. The BSA condones the "immoral" to be members and leaders of Exploring which exclusively belongs to and is owned by the same BSA. Quite the double standard don't you think?(This message has been edited by abel magwitch)
  12. The BSA becomes very, very hypocritical having a program that does not live up to its strict interpretation of values and character. Scouts and leaders are dismissed from the BSA based on the organizations strong stance against homosexuals yet it is more than happy accepting funding for another program that in no way lives up to those values. LFL really took off when United Way chapters started to withhold funding the BSA because of its policy of discrimination. Now the BSA has found a way to still get funding from United Way chapters by offering this so called LFL program. In my o
  13. http://www.learningforlife.org/ My earlier post was focused on the LFL program, not the exploring program. Yes my council has a few (and I mean a few) explorer programs. But I was referring to the much bigger group which has high membership numbers called learning for life. And I agree with Eagle's comment with this exception - LFL could be a good program but unfortunately it is too easy to abuse in order to inflate membership numbers. So here we have a program which is part of the BSA - the same BSA that discriminates based on their definitions of morality and religion, and ye
  14. LFL = lol. It is one of the BSA's sacred cows. A well hidden program to boost council numbers so pros can make their membership criticals. You won't even see the words Boy Scouts in the literature or on the LFL/Exploring website. Just try to get information from your council on how many LFL groups there are in the council and where they are located. Try to find out from your council how many members are registered within the groups. Then if you are lucky enough to get some information, visit some of your public schools where the program supposedly exists and ask the principals
  15. I find this a bit puzzling. According to individual council annual reports through the years including my own council's, I tend to read every year how membership numbers have increased from the previous year. Years of bragging about the council making the quality rating and constantly meeting membership goals. How can this be?
  16. http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/06/13/12201507-boy-scouts-board-member-opposes-anti-gay-policy?lite I wonder how long it will be until this board member is asked to step down.(This message has been edited by abel magwitch)
  17. In the past, my council would lose paperwork all the time. Even when you hand delivered it, things would simply disappear. So I decided to try something. I spent a few cents more on postage and had some paperwork sent certified to the scout office which required a signed receipt. Guess what? When I went to the scout office weeks later to check the status of the paperwork I sent, I was once again told that by the scout office that they either never received the paperwork or it must have gotten lost. But this time I had a receipt signed by the professional who received the mail. Needless to say,
  18. Basement, I feel for you. I wrote before that our overzealous district director decided he wanted to have an FOS drive at an Eagle Court of Honor. The SM politely told him no. The nerve of that guy.
  19. Don't know. Don't have one. Haven't had one in years. District currently does not even have a district commissioner. Haven't had one going on three years now.
  20. Was this merger to be expected? Or was this merger a bit of a surprise?
  21. It is easy in my district. The District Director simply appoints the positions he wants to fill while leaving the others vacant. Haven't had a district commissioner now for two years. Nobody is allowed to contact the district chairman unless they go through the DD first. And to top it off, we continually made quality district status for years.
  22. I can recall when popcorn was first introduced. The troop was at summer camp and one of the pros came to visit each troop at camp letting them know that the BSA had a new fundraising idea to help supplement a unit's fundraising efforts. It was just that - a supplement. Many units had trouble coming up with ways to fund them. Some units sold things like candy, light bulbs, etc. Other units had strong sponsoring institutions which supported their units with plenty of funding. Our troop was and still is well supported by our church. So, we never had a need to supplement our treasury with th
