So my pack charges $35 per adult, $20 per youth. It adds up quickly. For me, my wife, son, and daughter, it was $110. Not surprisingly, many families only went with the scout and one parent. It's a nice event at a catering hall, but it just seems excessive. And if the cost really is keeping some families away, it just shouldn't be like that.

This might have to to go on my "we need to rethink this for next year" list. That list is growing quickly.

That's far too much. It's not a wedding.

Boy Scout Uniform not on the Cub Scout Uniform,  Is it the pack's responsibility to Hand Over the patches or or It is Troop responsibility to hand over the patches once they the Troop?

yes, technically it is not a required element of the webelos uniform. That said, if they are "Practicing the patrol method in your den for one month" then as webelos scouts they should be wearing a patrol patch, IMO. Again, I wouldn't care too much if they don't worry about the patch if they are about to cross over, because they will repeat the patrol formation process again shortly.

The troop should not hand over the patch because the youth aren't in the troop. It should either be the pack/den, or the individual scout's job to get the patch, depending on your unit's custom. But patrol patches aren't controlled items, so anyone can get it.

  3. I’ll agree with that. Running as a patrol is my first plan for my bear den starting next year. I want everyone to call us the robot den or the wolverines or whatever the kids pick instead of webelos 1. Some of the stuff well hold off on til the next year, but that scouting adventure requirement should start as the first webelos activity, and its not a good thing that the training stuff doesn’t explain that.

  4. I don’t know if earns the patrol patch is the right way to put it. They have a patrol emblem once they vote on it. They just are the raccoons den, or the tacos or whatever. The den leader could buy the patchs, the youth could buy them, etc as per your pack tradition. If you’re crossing over shortly, I might not do that just because it’s not real thrifty. But a troop generally wouldn’t purchase the patch because the troop doesn’t buy stuff for youth who aren’t members.

    Why?

The scouts in question could complete requirement 6a & 6b at one troop meeting, complete the other requirements on a campout, and then 6c at the final troop meeting of the month.

We should be in the business of keeping youth active and interested!

To clarify, I certainly wouldn't say that it can't happen, or that it would be bad. New scouts reaching tenderfoot in a month is a good goal, especially for a new troop getting everyone up to speed. I would just expect that to reach second class in two months, you inevitably have the one or two scouts that missed a meeting and couldn't quite get every thing done and are one requirement short. And even if not, if they are all enjoying the process, working the method, etc, I'm not going to say they are doing it wrong.

Unless it is a group of very highly motivated 16-year-old Venturers who are working very hard to try to reach Eagle.   In such a situation, whether they are self-motivated could be assessed by talking to them.

Exactly that. The best thing to do is find out how things are going, rather than guess from afar.

Or attend another troops meeting before 2/1.  The requirement doesn't state "while a member of a Scouts BSA troop" or "attend a meeting of your Scouts BSA troop".

There's a general requirement of "All requirements for the Scout rank must be completed as a member of a troop or as a Lone Scout. If you have already completed these requirements as part of the Webelos Scouting Adventure, simply demonstrate your knowledge or skills to your Scoutmaster or other designated leader after joining the troop." But their own meeting should clearly count.

As a whole, I'd be perhaps a bit more concerned if every scout earned tenderfoot in 1 month, and then
    second class the following month.

    That works!!

    Thank you, malraux.

I am a happy camper.  Amused too now that I see that the site has a record of old emails I used back when my son was a mere Bobcat...

I discovered that they still have my bsa member id number from when I was a scout in the mid-90s. Don't think they'll have an email associated with it, from back then, but I wonder if the prodigy email is in there somewhere.

I am not sure of all the reasons our pack is different and has dens meet infrequently, but I was told that it was to accommodate families with multiple activities and so that it is less demanding on the leaders. However its not set in stone and I have the freedom to schedule meetings and activities at other locations.  I like the idea of having the Webelos involved in the planning. I do all the planning now, but I have read about how the older Scouts operate and it might not be a bad idea to begin transitioning with some small decisions and simple planning and see how it goes.

Last year our pack operated like that. It didn't work real well, in that it was hard to schedule, hard to get things done, and I think we lost a fair number of scouts because there wasn't much interaction. This year we moved to having all the den meetings at once. It works out so that we meet 3 times a month, 2 den meetings and 1 pack meeting. It has helped a good bit. Everyone is almost done with rank advancement now rather than rushing in may, dens interact, attendance is pretty good because everyone knows what day to show up and its just part of the routine. Weekly meetings is a very good thing.

As for the patrol method, I would strongly recommend getting your webelos to start functioning as a patrol, with youth led activities as appropriate. IE, the Denner  should take attendance, should be the person leading the pledge, if theres a thing to demo, he gets to demonstrate, etc. The youth should be doing as much as possible (now for 4th and 5th graders thats not as much as in a troop, but still).

Any partial progress you’ve made toward your current training plan won’t carry over to the new one. That means you’ll want to complete any in-progress training by year’s end.

If you’ve already finished your training, you’re good to go. Sit back and relax. If you haven’t started, I’d recommend waiting until the new courses become available on Jan. 2.

If you were trained beforehand for your position, you are still trained. If you change to a new position, to be trained you need the new training. If you were only partially through the online training you'll have to start over. It sounds like you are fine though.
