  1. I was going through my patch collection the other day with my son. I found a patch that was light blue that had two white stars, and another that had three white stars. It is a little smaller than the den number patch for a cub scout uniform. I remember we wore them on the shirt sleeve. I think they were a earlier version of the Quality Unit Award, but I am not sure. Does anyone remember this patch?
  2. Here are a few quick thoughts. What about grandma or grandpa. They may or may not be able to run with the boys, but they sure can help out with the administative parts. Most communities may have a RSVP program. Retired Senior Vollinteer Program. If you have this program, you may be able to tap them for some extra help. If you are selling something, there are different ways that it can be packaged. Point out JFK's speech with a small twist. Ask not what your Pack can do for you. What can you give to the Pack. The enjoyment they can get by helping out. Break down the job area=s
  3. If they are in half a uniform ie. jeans and scout shirt, do they give half a salute? Something to think about. As for as wearing the headgear, I always follow the pattern from my military days. Hats off indoors. Hats on outside.
  4. I know how you feel. Last year, our Weebloes Leader showed up to only one Cmmt. meeting, Bear, one meeting, the only regulars were the Pack leader, and Committe Chair. Half way through the year, the Committe Chair would not answer the phone, return messages, our address the fact that we would have to recruit new leaders for the following year. We still do not have anyone for Wolf for this year. I have come so close to blowing a gasket, I have almost blown up several times. I have thought several times of pulling my son out, and look for another Pack. I just don't want to show him
  5. I do not know what it is made out of, but as a boy scout in the late 70's I would iron my sash after it was washed. I do not know if they are made different now. I have just got back in to scouting and I do not have a sash. I was planning to buy a new one to replace my original one, whereabouts unknown.
  6. I am a bear den leader this year. We will be doing the requirments for the wittling chip. I will have the practice doing soap carvings. Does anyone know a place on the web that I can print pictures of items to carve for this level of boy?
  7. I ran acrossed these in a YMCA camp that we went to on a Jr. High field trip. Test #1 The patrol is lead to a area that has a rope swing haning from a tree. In the case that I was involved in the rope hung in the middle of a large ditch. The patrol is given the following tools. A long staff, A small rope (6 foot 1/4 inch dia. A long wire, or metal coat hanger. The boundries on the ditch are marked on either side of the ditch. The patrol must get the entire group across the ditch without anyone falling in to the out of bouds area of the ditch. If anyone falls in, the must start o
  8. See if you can borrow the uniform of a webelos's uniform. Hopefully it has all the badges, tiger, bobcat, wolf, bear. Lots of beltloops, or have pictures. Hold up a beltloop, and ask them if anyone likes to do or try any of these activities. Bow and Arrow, Swimming, Soccer, ect. Tell them that they can learn and participate in these events, if they join up. Show them a unfinished pine wood derby car, and ask them what it is. Then show them a finished one. Ask them if they would like to build one. You could even have a boy in his tiger uniform, and the finished product in the webeloe in
  9. I was thumbing through this months Boy's Life magazine. I stopped off at Pee Wee Harris, and thought back to a old issue 1970's in which Pee Wee and Westy were camping in the winter, and melting snow for there water. It said that there was a bad smell coming from the pot. Westy told Pee Wee that he should have stirred the pot of snow. Becouse he did not the snow had scorched. Westy then said that Pee Wee was the only scout that could burn water. This is a case for the myth busters. Can you burn snow? From my expereance, you cannot.
  10. I live near the Mississippi River, and when we have had a emergancy in this area{floods} several of the scout troops have helped out with filling sand bags. I was wondering if anyone has heard any stories of Troops or Packs that have been able to help directly in the releif effort. Loading and unloading of supplies, ect. I think that would be a excelent topic to share as a scoutmaster miniute. It would be a good example to share ideas for community service. If you have heard any stories, please share them with us.
  11. I have completed the youth protection training on line. I am not sure what IMHO is.
  12. I am a bear den leader. Should I try to get my BALLOO training in this year, so I am ready this coming summer when the boys become Webloes. Does this training have any type of experation?
  13. I am a 2nd year den leader. Last year I was with wolf, and this year is bear. I have completed Fast track, leader basic, and leader specific training. This fall I plan to attend the morning sesion of Pow Wow, but due to a wedding (not mine) I will have to miss the afternoon secion. What is the differance of Leader Specific when it comes to Bear -vs- Wolf? Could I pick up training at another Council if it has a date that I do not have schedule conflics with?
  14. Here are my thoughs on this subject. As a person goes through life they will be required to perform a task to a certain level. Are you going to do the minimal level to just get by, or are you going to go above and beyond. BSA has set a ways recagnize those who are willing to achive those goals.
  15. This has been the first time I have read this section of the Scouter Network. I want you to know that this was a great story for a first impression. Thank you for sharing your story. Brian
  16. I will be a bear den leader this year. I want the boys to earn their wittling chip card. Where can I find the requirments for this. When the earn this, do they get the card and the patch? Brian
  17. We have in the past done a cookout in the fall for the first pack meeting. Hot dogs, chips bug juice, and ask families to bring a desert. This is a nice way to start off the year. We have also had a pizza party that the Pack funds also. Brian
  18. Beth, Thank you for being willing to rise to the task. Last year was my first year as a den leader. What I learned the hard way, in my first year could fill volumes. One quick point on crafts, is to show the finished projects in different stages. Practice the craft at home to figure out how long it takes to complete the task. What I remember from cub scouts is all we did was crafts. Use the fall and spring time for outdoor activities. The crafts work better in the winter when your outdoor activities are limited due to the weather. Good Luck Brian
  19. I was at work today, and heard a little about this story on the radio. The local DJ's were saying that the boy was 11 years old, and wondering about what suvival skills he had learned in the scouts. The fact that he was out west I would hope he would have learned some skills. I will have to look up to get the full story. One thing that was not talked about yet, is that when you are lost, SIT DOWN AND STAY PUT!!!! It also gives us a prime example to show our scouts what could happen to anyone if we do not use the buddy system. I am currently a Cub Scout Den Leader. I
  20. I was a boyscout from 1974 to 1980. I was a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow. What I remember is that the white sash was only worn across the shoulder when a OA event was taking place, tap out, election or conclave. When formal dress events like awards cerimonies, the sash was looped on the belt, arrow pointing up. I am now in Cub Scouts, and I have seen scouts wearing there sashes on their shoulder for formal events that are non-OA events. Has the policy changed?? Since I have been out of the OA for 25 years, I did not know if I could gain access to the OA side of the forun.
  21. I have been in full uniform, as are a few of the adult leaders. The boys are in day camp teeshirts, and a full mix of hats. We follow along, and do not make waves. I think they are doing this becouse it is easyer that explaining it to the 100 boys that are there. I have been out of scouting since 1980, and found many changes. I was just wondering if this was just one of them. Thank you for your feedback Brian
  22. I am attending cubscout day camp with my son. When we are doing our outdoor flag cerimonies, we are told to take our hats off. Both him and I are wearing our offical scout headgear. My thoughts are that offical headgear is left on and you give the scout salute. If you are in civialion clothes you would remove your head gear and put the hat or your hand over your heart. If you are in a mixed uniform then it is up for grabs. What are your thoughts??? Brian (This message has been edited by a staff member.)
  23. At your next Pack meeting, pass out a (shopping list) now that summer is here, you will have yard sales popping up everywhere. You may have someone in your Pack that likes to hit these sales. Once they have a idea what to look for, they may be able to pick them up at a very good price. The same goes to the local auctions. Brian
  24. From what I have read, you have the same problem that a lot of packs have. I have a idea that may work. I am still trying to get my Cubmaster to go along with it. At you next Pack meeting, do everything to get all the parents to come, even if you have to offer a door prize. A SKIT Have a large box placed in the front of the room. Have a rope tied around it, and a sign that says Pack XYZ Programs. After the meeting is started, have the active leaders come forward and try to move the box by pulling on the rope. With a great deal of effort they are not able to
  25. This is what I did at our last meeting. Relay races that my old drill sergant in basic training would have loved. Equipment: For each team. 1 car tire without the rim, 1 basketball, 1 frizbee. Race#1 Place frizbee about 20 yards away, player must roll the tire, arond the frizbee and back to the starting line and let the next player go. Race# 2 Place tire 5 yards away, have one player stand near the tire. Players must bounce or throw the ball into the tire. The teammate than throw the ball back. All Players must make at least 2 baskets. When on is made it 2 times then the
