  1. So many to choose from. #1 My first summer camp,as a new Scout at the closing campfire, it seemed like everyone earned a badge except me. I was to busy having fun, and I vowed to myself that it would never happen again. #2 The very next year, when I was First Class, and was tapped out. I think the Chief thumped me extra hard, becouse I was grinning from ear to ear. It felt like he reached in and grabbed my heart. 3. Typing up the last of the paper work to complete my Eagle. 1 hour before I turned 18
  2. This summer, I will be a instructer for my 9 year old daughters girlscout troop for a 3 day summber outing. One of the first subjects will be outdoor dangers. Snakes, insects, drowning, fire, poisin ivy, sun exposer,ect... Since this may be some of these grils first exposer to the (Woods) I want to be able to cover all area's, but I do not want to freak them out, and make them so parranoid, that they will not want to leave the pavillion area. Do you have any thoughts other than point out that as long as one takes precausions one will usually never run across any of these dangers.
  3. Where does one go to get topographical maps of your local area. I want it for Map and Compass belt loopm, and I will be teaching my daughters Girl Scout Troop this summer.
  4. I am sorry that I did not make myself clear. I wanted them to try several differant cooking methods. Foil packs one day, tin can stove the next, and possably wood fire the next. This way they can see that there are more ways than one to fix a meal. We could also discuse the pros and cons of each method. Thanks for the help.
  5. I have been asked to give instructions in outdoor cooking for my daughters girl scout troop this summmer. Since I am very rusty, and not been camping in 25 years, I need some information. I am looking into the use of tin can stoves. One source says to roll up corrigated cardboard and add melted paraffin and burn this as fuel. Has anyone ever tried this method, and where do you find a paraffin store?? I am thinking that I might find it in the canning section of the local grocery store, but I am not sure. These are 9 year old girl, and I want simple idea's to get them started. I plan on h

    Help

I am a Den Leader in Cub Scouts. My wife is a assistant leader in Brownee's, and the girls are due to bridge to Jr. We just found out from Council that there will be no local day camp becouse of lack of leadership, and internal personal problems within the district. My wife wanted me to be day camp director, but becouse of my lack of knowledge of the girl scout program, and lack of time till summer,I told her that I did not feel there was enough time. On the other hand, I told her we could do a mini-day camp for the troop of 5 girls. Here is my problem. I tryed to pull up information on
  7. I build bicycles for Wal-mart. I've been with the company for 14 years. Prior to that I was in the Army for 10 1/2 years.
  8. Thanks Kahuna, These are straight leg pants. They have the feal simualar to what I had in the Army that we called field pants, except no cargo pockets. They are not not wool, but almost a very heavy cotton. Thanks for the help.
  9. Welcome Kudzu, Do you know if you would prefer hands on with boys, or one of those pricless people that lurks in the shadows that does all the unseen work that is so terrably important. Some times leaders are afraid to give you jobs, becouse they are afraid to scare you off. Possably have them give you a list of things that need attention, and you can start small, with one project, and go on from there. Good Luck, and welcome
  10. I have recently bought some old uniforms, but I was wondering how to estimate the age of them. On pair of pants was advertised from the 1950's. It is a heavy material, with 5 buttons in the fly. I would almost guess this would be thought to be a winter uniform if there was such a thing. Has anyone ever seen any book or other type of information to show how the boyscout uniform evolved. Any help would be wonderful.
  11. When I was a Cubscout we cut out turtles from about 1/4 inch plywood. Painted them and then driiled a whole through the body, and ran a string through the hole. We then raced them. Does anyone have referances on the plans for this? See page 28 in the Wolf book to see what the race looks like.
  12. Last Nov, our Committee Chair had us hand out the Quality Unit Award for 2005. I see that the 2006 Award is pictured in the scout catalog. My question, is when does the unit earn the award? Is it when we recharter?
  13. My old troop was sponsored by the First United Methodist Church, and our neckerchief was custom made. It had the a black cross, with the flames next to it just like the Methodist Flag. It was printed on Dark Green fabric. I always thought it looked very distinctive. It was never as good a troop 88 from Potosi Wisconcin, I think. They had two 8 balls sitting side by side. I forget the color of the fabric. I always liked the custom made ones, becouse they could identfy special things about the unit. Where they were lacated, and who sponsored them.
  14. Its 12:30 a.m. and I just let the dog out. I didn;t have my glasses on when I read the opening subject. When you first stated talking about wearing camo, I thought at first you were talking about face paint. Well, now that I thik about it, if your going to wear camo paint, then you might as well paint your face, and throw the camo nets over your tents.
  15. With spring just around the corner, I have a fundraising idea. I have heard of Rent a Scout where you advertise to do yard work, garage cleanup, ect. Has anyone done this and what were your results. I wonder how you work this following the guidlines of child protection, and guides to safe scouting. Do you team each boy up with a adult? I see this could give the boy a chance to make money on his own if he shows he can do a good job. This would be excelent for our senior citizens who may need some extra help with spring cleanup.
  16. When I was a boyscout, our troop was sponsored by the Methodist Church Mens Club. They put on a Chili Supper, and the scouts helped out by selling tickets before hand, ran the cash drawer, and waited and busted (cleanedup) the mens club did all the cooking. They keept the profits from this dinner, and about 2 months later, we did it again with the same arrangments, and we received all the profits. You could do this with any civic organization, and this would give them extra man/boy power, increase the draw, and give the boys exposer to the food industry.
  17. I cannot even come close to your statments. All I can say is thumbs up. Brian
  18. Here is a topic that I have not run across. Why do we do skits?? After some thought on the subject, I came up with this answer. We have the boys do skits to give the their first experince at public speaking. It is always easier to do if you are trying to be a little silly. It takes a lot of the pressure off. Does anyone else have a opinion to share??
  19. Cub Scouter Award is a award earned by a adult leader for fulfilling certain requirments. The Denner, and Assistant Denner are positions held by Cub Scouts in your Den. They are for short periods of time,1 to 2 months. Duties include helping to set up the den meeting place, and cleanup , helping with games, ceremonies, tricks and puzzles. The Denner wears a tab with 2 yellow cords on the left shoulder. The assistant denner has only 1 cord. See page 20-7 Cub leaders handbook. I hope this is the answer you are looking for. Brian
  20. As for brushing teeth, all I can say is Lead By Example Clydsdale 115 When I was in the Army, there were some of the guys I was with would hold there bowels till they had to go to the rear. They flatly refused to use a outdoor latrine. I never could understand this state of mind.
  21. I am a bear leader now, but I am already looking over the horizon to Webelos next year. I have a 2 part question. I understand that you should visit a boyscout meeting. Do you wait till they are Webelos II? My second ? is do you make a unplaned visit. My thoughts are is that a troop can put on a whiz bang meeting when you let them know you are comming in advance. But how are there meetings when they do not expect you till the last miniute? Does this sound to sneeky? I also plan on visiting both troops that are in my town.
  22. Akela in NY: There are many awards that adults can earn as a leader for presenting a quality program to the scouts. For Cub Scout Leaders here are a few of them. Cub Scouter Award Tiger Cub Den Leader Award Webelos Den Leader Award Den Leader Award They can be found in the Cub Scout Leader Handbook. There is a sign off sheet you fill out as you complete them. You then turn it into your Committe Chair to be sent to Council. There are other awards that you must be nominated for service at District, Council, Reginal ect. There are also awards for Boy Scout Leaders. You may som
  23. Hey!! I always tell my boys that you never know what you might learn when you open a book. I remember when I was a First Class Scout, I sat down and read the Boy Scout Handbook cover to cover. Not just the parts to earn a badge, but every bit. I was totally surprised how much usfull information was just a arm reach away.
  24. Yes, there has been accidents involved in scouting. Of cource those statistics are always on the front pages of the news. What statistics that you do not see, is the lives saved, injuries prevented, becouse those scouts, former scouts remembered one of those lessons. Those are the stories that should be told. And I am sure all of us have at least one story to tell. My story involves deer hunting in the winter of 79, in Northern Illinois. I had built a camp fire becouse the weather was so cold. I ended up sitting down with my back to the fire, when I realized that my orange hunting v
  25. I've voted for some responses, when I thought someone made a good point,or brought up a important issue. Till I read this, I never noticed the numbers. I guess my glasses are worse than I thought. I'll give you a thumbs op for a very good question>
