  1. I have decided in the wake of all of the injuries and deaths associated in scouting lately, that I would like to put together some good training to refresh everyone on heat, and cold weather related injuries and other saftey related training. What I am looking for is any thing already done, as I don't want to reinvent the wheel. Do any of you have this, or can you point me in the right direction. You can send me a PM or reply here. Thanks in advance. Robert L. DeWitt ASM Troop 12 Chickasaw District Georgia Carolina Council Augusta, Ga I used to be a good Ole Bear SR-691
  2. We had a Scouter that was confined to a scooter, and the course diretor and the course participants did everything to ensure that he had a great experience. Where he need help it was provided, his batteries begain to fail, and his patrol members and the staff pushed him in a wheel chair and provided vehicle transportation when needed. Ask and they will ensure that you have a great experience. Robert L. DeWitt ASM Troop 12 Chickasaw District Georgia Carolina Council Augusta, Ga I used to be a good Ole Bear SR-691
  3. I have taken the class room version of both of the water related classes, and the online version. the two classes are both well done and there is little difference except for the disscussions that will ocurr in the classroom version. 4. The only place zi know of that has good quality 75th graphics is on the BSA's web site (www.scouting.org/nav/enter.jsp?s=xx&c=ds&terms=75th ) you can start here and dee if this will work for you.
  5. One thing to consider is the menu, cooking sausage and or bacon, is time consuming and they both produce grease, which is a potential burn hazard. In our pack we all ways started breakfast and hour earlier than we would start to get the boys up, so that we could cook the bacon and sausage. We usually had two or three grills going to cook bacon, sausage and the pancakes, as well as two Coleman stoves going to cook the eggs, and we only did scrambled eggs. As cooking to order just took too long. We usually had a dedicated core group who did the cooking for the pack at breakfast time, an
  6. We allways did eggs, bacon, sausage, and pancakes at all ot our Cub Scout overnighters. We usually didn't let the boys do any of the cooking at breakfast, but that was because we usually started before most of them were even awake. I don't see a problem, with this one stipulation, that the stoves and griddles are at a hetght that all of the Cubs can reach yjem with out have to strech or reach to far. Most adults do not think about this. My son when he was a WEBELOS Scout pointrd out that he would not be avle to cook on my grill because it was to tall for him at the time. Go and have a great ti

  10. We had a similar incident two weekends ago during the 1st phase of the course, and except for the individual that let the shovel unattended everyone thought that it was a learning experence. By this I mean all of our Scouts will misplace things and hoiw we handle it can mean alot as to for the individual Scouts see how we a the Adult leaders handle the situation. We all thought that this was a good learning experence. Unless you are the end of having to acknowledge that you lost or misplaced something, you do not know how it feels, and you should learn from the experence, it seems that this wa
  11. Well I just completed the first weekend at SR-691. What a blast, learned a lot. Made great friends, have a great "BEAR" patrol, we have geled great. Think I have my ticket items, just need to get them approved. Can't wait until the last weekend of this month. Expect to have a great time and get to see the new council Scout Reservation. Still humming the "Back to Gilwell" song, catch my self doing it all of the time. This is real the best thing out there for a Scouter to take. Robert L. 12. He should year one service star with a numeral "1" and a service star with a numerial "4". The service star with the "1" in it is because at the time he was a Tiger it was a seperate program. Hope that thjis helps.
  13. Just remember to scale down all ideas to the appropiate attention and skill levels of the groups that you are to teach. Using rope ie, knot tying, whipping and fusing, and making rope would be just fine for most Bears and WEBELOS, but you could not keep Tigers interested long enough for them to learn these activites. Another age specific would be fire building, how to construct different types of fires and when to build them, and that leads into Leave No Trace. Short hikes, involving palnt and wildlife identifacation would also work. And as OA members become involved in there Cracker Barrels,
  14. I have taken both the classroom version, and the new online version, and they are pretty close to the same in content. It would be nice if the BSA would put more of this training online, BUT with the ability to report this to the local council. 15. Our Council uses the Universaity of Scouting to supply the needed training in a one day senario. I have attended the last two years, and overall I think that I have learned quite a bit. Granted I am like most in that I think some of the classes could have been more detailed but these classes followed the syllbus. Just think in those few specific classes the course needs to be reworked. As a Traning NCO in the Army for ten years, I think I can speak with some knowledge on the lack of adaquate information that some of these courses had. But overall I think that with some small tweaking the train

  20. While I was active duty in upstate Ny I used mink oil. I would strip the polish of of the the Issue Danners that I had and then applie the mink oil. The go back and reapply the black polish to the boot. this worked very well, just a little time consuming. Robert WEBELOS II Den Leader Pack 49 Augusta, Ga
