  1. Someone made a good point about the United Way being able to choose whom they wish to associate with. If it is not Boy Scouts, then so be it! Scouts decides the requirements for being involved and the uw has that same right. Now that I've cooled down somewhat, I see that. But rest assured I will do everything I possibly can to see that funding come from other sources. The company I work for is a BIG supporter of the uw. I will not be rude, but I will make sure these red-necks, good ole boys, young professionals, mid-level management and all the rest know how the uw feels about scouts! I wi

  3. No, but if you're gay and try to join the Scouts, the Scout say "you can't join." That's the problem. That's not where I'm going.... the man said "Serve" not "join". The real issue is if you can't accept this, you shouldn't exist. How non-liberal can you be?
  4. Cooling down somewhat,, I'm in the Capitol Area Council.. But, you know it's really about more than the money. A partnership since 1927!!!!! Surely you can begin to estimate the countless hours of community service done by scouts/scouters in 76 years!?! Now, because we will not compromise, "united way" wants nothing to do with us. When was the last time you saw a gay-activist group roll up in the aftermath of a hurricane and start cleaning up and serving breakfast? Not as an individual, but as a concerted group. The chairman of the uw said " we need to allocate the money to agencies th

  6. You know, Wingnut - After listening to ZZTops' "Tube Steak Boogie", I don't know if I'll ever be able to refer to hot dogs as tube steaks again! Ha. (if that's what you meant) Back to the string... Where we used to live, we did SFF in the spring and found it to work well, also. I don't think it has been done in the area I live in now in a looooooooong time, if ever. But, the troop of which I am a part, has decided to do it in the spring and I think it will be great for the community to see young people doing something for someone other that themselves. Good luck to all! YC
  7. Ok, that makes sense and is probably the reason I had such a hard time finding information. I tried 3 different councils and kept getting sent to voice-mail. One more piece of info I need is: where can you order the bags so they will have your info on them? P.S. i sure like you folks, must be 'cause y'all are scouters! YCVT bd
  8. Read some information about care of dutch ovens in the scout handbook last night. might be more in there.... Lodge or coleman websites might be another resource. YCVT bd
  9. Thanks again, Vets!! Me pop was in WWII in the Pacific. Mom says it changed him forever. You vets know you are appreciated, I hope!! Shewhomustbeobeyed and I were in a little home-grown resturant today. Got to looking around at the other 15 or so patrons, saw a lot of gray hair. All but 2 of the folks were veterans of either WWII, Korea or Vietnam. On a whim, we picked up their checks. It just felt like to right thing to do. I've had it pretty easy because they picked up the check years ago!!! Thanks again BD YCVT
  10. Hi folks, 'nother question... Our troop is in a rural area and since we're a new troop, there is not an abundance of merit badge counselors. A scout came up to me last night and was excited about taking the automotive mb. We don't have a counselor anywhere around. There is a guy in the church (the CO) that does just about anything with cars. He rebuilds antiques from the ground up. I've checked the mb booklet and he seems way qualified to be a counselor. He's very busy, but has agreed to work with any of our 10 scouts that are interested. My question is: Why do I have to charge this
  11. I'm the troop committe chair and the way I see my job is to help these young men achieve the things they want to. If they can dream and plan it, I want to do all I can to help without getting in the way and making "MY" opinion the dominant voice. Sure, they're still kids and need a little help, but that's what the SM and ASM's do on a weekly basis. This sounds like another thread with adults making this a power-play! more adult training, anyone? YCVT bd
  12. Good post, Also heard that the ambassador from Iraq(b4 the conflict) was grilling Colin and and quipped something about only 10% of Americans even knowing where Iraq was. Colin responded something like yes, that's true, but sadly for you they're all Marines.. Really like that Colin... YCVT bd
  13. Beaver, Not a UT fan, so I'll say it.. Santa wouldn't be able to find another team as good as OU! And I like the comment about Baja, OK. But, there are some nice Boy Scout camps in Tx. That's why I sign off...y'all come visit Tx. YCVT bd
  14. Beaver, Jest quit yer "pinin" for VT. What would you do without fireants, rattlesnakes, scorpions, and all the other things that make camping out down here 'fun'? I've been as far north as OK and it's pretty country, too! The last time I wandered north of the Red, it was up the Eastern side of OK above Antlers. It was fall and the trees were mighty nice then. I can already hear it coming now about how the Big_Dog needs to see more country, so maybe Santa will send me some plane tickets to Yankee-land!! YCVT bd
  15. Hi, Dutch and welcome... Just want to say stick to your guns. Do not be intimidated just because this SM has years experience. YP is something Scouts takes very seriously and Scouters should comply with. For the SM to say he doesn't pay attention to this rule doesn't fit with.... "A Scout is.. trustworthy, loyal, obedient" to name a few. What would be his defense is a scout doesn't "pay attention to a rule"? YP is something that has become a lifestyle with me and the better 1/3. (her who must be obeyed). Scouts, high-school band kids, church kids... it's all the same. YP is for our be
  16. Louie, I agree with acco, have confidence in yourself. I you are in seminary to one day have a church, then God is probably using this experience to teach you patience or some other virtue that you have to go thru a lot of discomfort to learn. Hint: churches are full of people just like these other leaders. As long as you are sure that the boys are learning what they should, just keep turning in the advancements and going forward. If you're talking about the cubmaster, look at it like this: maybe yours is the only den that can handle the rough stuff. That may not be true, but as long

  18. I'm interested to hear the replies to this, also. I have a campaign hat that was a present from a pack that I worked with, and man, it's like trying to put a square peg in a round hole!! I think I much prefer the felt "Indiana Jones" looking hat YCVT bd
  19. DS, 'nother question... I started scouting in one council and have since moved to a different one. The first council participated in Scouting for Food and the one I'm in now doesn't. I really liked that program for a number of reasons. Can the troop and pack in our town decide to participate in this national good turn? We are probably one hundred miles from our neighboring council that does this, so we can't participate with them. I believe the combined knowledge of this august group of scouters will be a big help! ..YCVT.. Thanx BD
  20. I was born in '59 (not 18...), so I believe that puts me on the border of the boomers. My sons and I have been out of scouting for about 5 years now. I was not involved after they left scouting because there was always so much to do. Now, I find I have more time, I'm getting more vacation time, etc.. and I really wanted to be involved in scouting because it is such a worthwhile program. Heck, I plain have fun with the kids and their parents both. I am the troop committee chair - for now- but am looking for my replacement so I can do things on the district level. I, too see that most youn
  21. Hi all, As I've said, our troop is brand new and way out in the sticks of central Texas, so we have not seen the current magazine. Is it true Boys Life featured video games this month? After reading the other threads, I would be interested to get y'alls take on that! BD P.S. how 'bout them Cowboys???
  22. All, Long-time reader, first-time poster! I think my first post should be light-hearted, maybe light-headed. We have just started a new troop in an area where no active troop resided. Consequently, the troop is comprised of boys with no scouting experience. Concerning the "necker-chief", one scout suggested wearing it as a 'dew-rag'. The SM and I see we have our work cut out..... yis
