  1. Our council runs Family Camp the price is $11 per head with a max of $55 per family so have more kids if you want a better deal. This includes A full afternoon of round robin activities five 40 minute sessions. My only recent participation is running the BB gun venue. Bear in mind this is Florida the originator of the 40 minute or more line and you pay way more to go there and meals and lodging are on your own too. It is just possible that someone waited 40 minutes at the range to shoot if they blew off their previous session and showed up 40 minutes early. We never let any adults shoot we are
  2. They are Web II after all why not just tell them to go find a troop to go camping with. They may even find someone that will let them shoot 22's if they camp at the right place.
  3. The most popular special by far is bringing in the fire truck and hosing them down for some reason this is major thrilling especially if the front row gets knocked off their feet. A distant second is the snake and reptile guy. The most popular regular venue's are BB gun and Archery.
  4. Most if not all councils now have a list of approved cub scout camping facilities. This is part of the outing planning of BALOO training.
  5. Welcome neighbor I am up in Twin Rivers district to your north.
  6. http://www.rainypass.com/ These folks are supposed to repair tents. Before spending big bucks getting zippers replaced have the adult gear person examine the tents. The scouts will often say a zipper does not work when all it needs is a minor repair we had a couple that the pull would come off when the tent was unzipped all the way we repaired by placing a safety pin stop about an inch up the zipper. If it requires more than in house then check with a local boat canvas place the ones who make tops and sail covers. Found this online but it may be useful for in house repairs as it comes with i
  7. Lets see what have the boys come up with lately two of them worked for Greyhound rescue, several have done the food bank, one was a volunteer in the library, have had some volunteer at their church, one just crossed over assisted at family camp, several were cub day camp workers, and the last Eagle project was for the Humane society. The requirements are a floor not a ceiling and most of our scouts stay involved. There is also a requirement for service hours in the school system which is a lot bigger hour wise than the boy scout requirements. As long as they bring in a note from the organizati
  8. http://www.thegreenguide.com/doc/114/bpa The above four page article goes through the concerns about Bisphenol-A. Seems like everything is either real bad for you or causing cancer. The most dangerous one I have seen seems to be this Dihydrogen Monoxide it is a leading cause of death among scout age boys. http://www.dhmo.org/facts.html
  9. Yes you can but should you? There are two sides to the preference equation. Having taken one MB from me my son will never take another one because I am too hard on him. Some parents might tend to lean the other way. Both sides are to be avoided.
  10. The committee who is the Scoutmaster's boss is getting the feedback from the scouts as to the scout's perception of the troop. If something is troubling to the committee they then call the SM on the carpet to advise him on what changes they want made. It may help to consider the SM as chief operating officer and the committee chair as CEO with the rest of the committee being the board of directors. The SM has his own chance for direct feedback from the scout with the SM conference.
  11. The BSA chose not to make APL a POR. The assistant patrol leader is chosen by the elected patrol leader. A scout does not need a POR for rank advancement until they achieve first class rank of our three patrol leaders none of them is first class two are on the cusp lacking only a requirement or so. Their are usually plenty of POR's to go around for the boys that need them. This is scouting we make use of every volunteer. Some scouts due to their exceptional skills in one area have a POR created for them ex: bugler or the scribe that writes a monthly newsletter as vs the scribe who just collect
  12. congradulations to your son ! Sounds like he is halfway to Eagle.
  13. As an ASM and MB counselor it depends on the badge and the requirement. As an ASM I will not even sign a Camping MB blue card until a scout has his 20 nights on the troop's books they have eliminated the non scouting camping from consideration. I do not expect the camping MB counselor to camp with the scout I will give the scout a letter certifying his tent nights, open air nights, cabin nights and long term nights. As a Rifle MB counselor if they bring me 5 qualifying targets achieved at a camporee, troop shoot or wherever I am going to count those toward their MB. If the requirement is clear
  14. Just so Bob White does not get the last word. Due diligence could also be construed to mean that you have filed the proper paperwork with your council office ie tour permit. That puts the onus back on them if they do not squawk that leader x needs training y before leading this outing you have done your duty and they are duly put on notice. Lesson always file your paperwork including the money earning application.
  15. our local scout camp has constructed a brand new SM lounge with wifi for just that purpose or maybe they were just tired of all the laptop users clustering in one corner of the camp to pirate internet service from the development beyond.
  16. We do not require BALOO participants to be in uniform however it is a scouting function and uniform is appropriate if they have one many BALOO participants are cub scout committee members so they most likely do not own a uniform. Webelos leader outdoor which is the latest incarnation of the old OWL course a ubiform would be useful for flag, dinner, and church. We do not overnite the BALOO trainees the Webelos leaders stay over one night. We specify a tent no larger than 7' X 9' to stop the mega tents and popups from appearing. This is all at the discretion of your local training comittee.
  17. David Scott is one of the good guys! I have never met him but have emailed back and forth a couple of times and read his posts. I promised myself I would buy his book when it came out. Thanks for the reminder.
  18. The BOR training is one that is typically offered at a Univ of Scouting type setting. That is where I took it even though it is unlikely I will ever sit on one. I do attempt to explain to the committee members that the Board is their opportunity to audit the program from the consumer(youth) side of the spectrum. Some of the boys have very good suggestions on areas they would like to see improved. The board is not designed for them to retest the scouts knowledge of requirements but to get a sense of the direction the candidate is headed in and if that direction in broad terms is compatible with
  19. I will have to say that most of the eagle projects around here require actual work as in physical stuff in the hot Florida sun. And sometimes that aforementioned nasty grey stuff and almost certainly running an idiot stick. It is not the proper venue for a scout uniform or a business suit. Shorts and an older t-shirt seem to be the uniform of the day. An experienced troop T-shirt would be best but chances are it won't go home clean.
  20. MB counselor training is offered by the district advancement chairperson it is the only training not offered by the training committee. Now you know who to call. Our district advancement chair will even come do an at your location one for a troop. She does reserve the right to have others from your district come in addition to your troop.
  21. Most wilderness style scout camps make provision for this type of camping with patrol sites widely separated and minimal facilities. Regular camps not so much and you might be able to approach it at some parks but it would cost a bundle to rent extra sites. We won't camp at the same campground more than once per year in order to stay on budget we sometimes have to cram the troop into fewer sites at the more commercial campgrounds.
  22. I like the ball idea you could get the rolling eyes and do the makeup part along with fuzzy colorful wigs. If no shotgun shells available small pieces of 3/4" pvc pipe will also fasten to necker. just hot glue the clown head to the pvc.
  23. Maybe your system has picked up some malware I have never seen any popups on this site of course I run mozilla with the popup blocker enabled and run spybot search and destroy checker on a regular basis along with antivirus and firewall.
  24. Most camps register their staff as a crew no matter what other unit they may hold a registration in. Many adults also wear more than one hat in more than one unit.
  25. The no one boy with a MB counselor stems from youth protection guidelines. We have a similar rule. If you find a troop that is ignoring youth protection guidelines run far and fast in the opposite direction. We always ask the boys wanting to take a badge to find a buddy to work on it with him this is to make it convenient for the merit badge counselor preventing any possible one on one contact. I have experienced the anyone but dad thing my son does not want to take any merit badges from me as I am too hard on him. He especially prefers the younger counselors at summer camp. In this area we
