  1. Now that would be funny if they get to the point where you could light up a joint in a restaurant, but not a tobacco cigarette. Maybe they don't listen to themselves when they speak.
  2. In my son's troop, if the PL does not make a duty roster, the PL is on the hook for all the work. I don't think anyone has forgotten more than once. I don't think any of the patrol members have failed to pitch in anyway.
  3. In my son's troop the outgoing SPL is the NSP (webelo xovers) PL. It is a longer commitment but seems to work out well for the new youth. The new parents seem to like the arrangement also.
  4. Keep the tutu. Post the pictures, or video!
  5. My son's troop covers registration and most trip fees for all adults, including summer camp. High adventure, and the pricey X-Country ski trip are not paid by the troop. Gas or other trip related expenses can be re-imbursed with receipt or other proof of expense. I asked about and received re-imbursement for WFA for myself and another adult to support the Philmont trip. Few of the adults ask for any gas or other trip re-imbursements. The only time I've done so is when driving a lot to support an extended biking trip. I don't think anyone has asked about any other training re-imbursements. Th
  6. Same as VigilEagle04. There are minor variations. Speak to the OA reps ahead of time about your concerns and follow up when you check in. I have some health issues that resulted in a minor tweak of the program for me. I agree in expecting you will have no issues. In the unlikely event you have an issue, they should be aware of what you may need them to do (or not do) to assist you.
  7. Son's troop meets each Mon eve. PLC on different eve once a month. Committee usually meets once a month before reg troop meeting. SM, ASMs, and non-members welcome. No votes excluded except to avoid any conflict of interet appearances. Occasional disagreements resolved (thus far) without fisticuffs. Extra meetings (or cancellation) as needed. Committee rarely has extra meetings without non-members (although with SM and ASMs).
  8. The original license issued by TroopMaster is keyed to the troop. It isn't shareable software in that context.
  9. I got a 3/4 one over a year before going to Philmont to save space/weight over the 'egg-crate' style I'd been carrying and it works as well. Convinced my son to try one (full) before leaving also and he too is now among the converted. He had stopped carrying the blue foam one as he said it did nothing useful for him. I got one on sale at REI and the other on sale at campmor.(This message has been edited by sbemis1)
  10. Our council requires the scout copy of the blue card. In the past, they would accept our pink copy of the advancement record submitted to them as proof (yep we got 'em all); but stopped even that a few years back. Quite a statement on what they think of the status of scouting records, including their own, eh?
  11. My son's troop has been around awhile. For the last 20 yrs or so, the patrols are largly same age, but the PL for the younger ones is chosen from older boys (>=FC) who then become part of the patrol for their tenure. FCFY was never one of their mantras. Advancement is encouraged but not emphasized. Most boys joining in Feb are TF at summer camp and SC sometime in the next spring. Those who make eagle are generally banging against the 18 wall.
  12. I'm not treasurer for my son's troop. I'd check out Troopledger (or equiv) and buy it myself just to save the headaches.
  13. I use my daughter's old Ariel sheet, cotton. After that first year at summer camp, I have a tent to myself now, always.
  14. Son's troop was there his first year, 2004. I was only there two days. Camp is nice, the boys did not care for the long walk uphill to the lake, which I think was the main reason they switched. That was a long time ago though.
  15. Mine was the post Beav referenced. Normal outings are paid ahead in son's troop with no refunds for cancellations < 1 week notice. There are usually some that cancel (sports, something unexpected, or something better came along). Since it is 'only' $10-15, who cares. There are also ususally a few last minute additions. The trip in the reference was to Philmont with the local contingent. That year the ball didn't get picked up, money was not collected in advance, and so no one appeared to feel any embarrasment or remorse in dropping out. By the time it got picked up the troop was
  16. Son's troop always goes to Philmont through the local contingent, this moves the 'blame' for no refunds removed a level to council. For Philmont 18-21 can be treated as youth or adult regardless of chartered registration. e.g. last year son's crew had 19 yr old adult advisor and 19 yr old youth crew leader. (Troop registration). It appears Philmont is always as accomodating as they can be, so long as you speak with them in ADVANCE.
  17. My son's troop had one the first year he joined, there was one eagle scout recognized. It was still a 'dinner affair' but included regular rank advancements, my son got his scout recognition there. Ususally there are 2 or more eagle scouts combined in a ceremony and there just isn't time to include the 'regular' advancement recognitions.
  18. Great response Beav, I needed the laugh. True, Philmont is the only place Boy Scouts shoot 30-06. Sorry I can't recall the source.
  19. I was in a powderhorn event with a young fellow venturer who was soon to turn 21. He was a bit concerned how scouting would then view his relationship with his 19 yr old girlfriend in his crew. Never did find out how that worked out. . . .
  20. When you check the GM made end-to-end in Lansing, you're going to find a lot of parts made elsewhere. And with all the inter related overseas investments and partnerships, it becomes pretty difficult to tell whom you are really supporting.
  21. In my son's troop only a few high acheivers go to MBC that is not troop related, excepting summer camp of course. This is somewhat discouraged though not forbidden (I believe the quality issue usually is offered). Usually 2 MB selected by youth vote have sessions during troop meeting each week, running until MB is "complete"; any partials required youth to schedule time with the MBC outside normal meeting times. Youth are generally limited to one MB at a time with this approach. We are in a rural area of an urban district/council which makes alternate MBC arrangements very parent dependen
  22. Attended the last two days of my son's summer camp some years back. Witnessed brief fistfight in troop's campsite between two older boys, not noted as troublesome. Result one bloody nose (better aim I suppose). SM suggested public apology to each other, and each others parents, in order. Both elected to do so. Also witnessed BOR for one of the boys that night, was to be for advancement, now changed to how you doin'? The advancment delayed about 4 months, the other wasn't close anyway.
  23. Haven't seen that at the camp my son's troop goes to. The bring home plenty of partials.
  24. Around here many of them will be only too happy to tell you so. Many attendees get a lot out of the course. Your own results may vary. Been there, didn't complete that, no interest in returning to do so.
  25. My son's troop is along the lines of SMT224's. High percentage of scouts that stay make eagle, but usually quite late since they don't get serious about it until 16 or so. First Class is required for HA and after that they coast until (unless) they decide to work toward eagle rank. The ones that are pushed hardest tend to drop out entirely since the fun is gone.
