  1. You also can't use a bivy style tent at Philmont, as I recall.
  2. Around these parts the blue cards for the listed merit badges are required when youth apply for Eagle rank. Nothing else (council records included) is acceptable.
  3. They are always rectangle folded, it is faster to re-fold. The Eagles in troop get to pick someone to help fold it triangular. My son and his fellow eagles didn't get one at their recent ECOH. . . .
  4. One of the other ASMs pointed out to me the other night that second class no longer requires lighting a fire nor a lightweight stove; although building a fire and setting up the stove are.
  5. Though I never finished I am partial to the simplistic Owl patrol yell: Whooooo? .... I suspect everyone else heard it more than they cared to. . .
  6. Son's troop had an older scout bring just a sheet for his ultralite BP gear on a November trip; with expected lows of high 20's. SM didn't even get upset, just asked him what style fire he planned to be using overnight to keep warm.
  7. Son's troop does separate ECOH only if more that 1 is being recognized. We attended one like that early in son's career. He will get his soon with two other youth, 1 of whom is travelling back from out of state and in fact earned his eagle there. Most of the youth elect to wait to be recognized with their friends.
  8. His workbook should cover how funds will be raised for the project. Since it is a 'service project', part of that service is paying for materials needed. Scouts in my son's troop occasionally receive a donation from the receiving org, but it is neither required nor expected. The scoutmaster is not involved directly in the project work. (He does always look it over when completed, and occasionally checks with org for satisfaction).
  9. As to the 'too involved' your on your own. My son's SM tried to be clear up front that the adults were in the background as much as possible. I took it to heart and ran with it. I have been on most outings and am an ASM (although it wasn't in my plan). On his first summer camp I showed up Thursday afternoon. Friday evening I overheard him say 'Oh, my Dad's here?'. Many times mom would find out something or other son did during an outing (' WHY DID YOU LET HIM EAT PANKCAKES AND SYRUP AND SAUGAGE WITH NO UTENSLS OR PLATES WITHOUT WASHING HIS HANDS') and I would point out that son and
  10. my understanding from one of the SMs at Jamboree is that they are being pushed if not req'd to have 21CWB to participate at that level. $.02 Being one of those with a less than stellar and abortive 21CWB experience, I'd opt for the upgrade if given the alternative. But if you already have it, keep it.
  11. I can recall DQing only one car over 5 years (rules were handed out and emphasised, and repeated). Boy and Granddad were informed it would race, but could not win anything (software made this easy). Granddad was, um, unhappy. Actually he was even more unhappy to watch the car finish 2nd or 3rd in all of its heats . . . .
  12. In my son's troop, the outgoing SPL is the NSP PL. The new boys like having 'the man' to lead them, and it makes some of the parents happy too.
  13. I'd have to agree with some of the other comments BD. When they try to hand you the arrow kits, reply you'll be glad to take them when complete. Same for the cars. Be clear about the rules and resultant DQs up front. We only had to do that once (apparently grandad volunteered to help out). My son's troop has cancelled a couple of events for lack of parental support (drivers). It gets attention.
  14. If I recall correctly the rules are both printed on the box and enclosed. I did have to DQ one car the first year I was involved. I said it could race but not win any prizes (raceview software allowed this). The car didn't do well enough to matter. Looked reeeeaaaaallly professional though.
  15. Speed, It looks like you are missing the constellation display app.
  16. I used RaceView for a few years: http://www.einet.net/review/955229-776041/RaceVIEW_Pinewood_Derby_Manager_Software.htm It worked well, but that was about 10 yrs ago. . . .
  17. Our troop does a canoe trip through Canadian wilderness every few years. It is required to register the specifics of the gear (esp canoe and tent colors and sizes). The rangers prefer bright colors. This is an aid both in finding overdue parties, and keeping track of who is where.
  18. 1 hit in four years of little league (walked a lot as I was too short to pitch to) 1 basket in three years of BBall (tipped in by opposing team) 2nd team high school tennis (lucky beyond belief though) Pretty good at football, but too small. Coach encouraged my parents to discourage me from playing (sort of akin to a chihuaha going up against a german shepard)
  19. First year I was volunteered to run this used the existing wooden 3-ln track with painted finish line. Second year we overlaid a 3-ln aluminum, with automated timer, and computer sw to eliminate all those 'My son's car was first. Was not. Was too, etc", or the "My son's car is in the slow lane. Is NOT. Is TOO, etc" Timer was .001 precision, and still had 3 ties. BUT I had said up front that the computer was the final authority. No one cared to try to argue with it.
  20. $.02 She should be able to stay in crew and office if she choses. She may want/need their ongoing support to help her cope. (adoption, raising, etc) She will need to have plan of how she will manage it all. (Not necessarily anyone's business, unless it will impact the crew) Would the dissenting parents have the same comments for an expectant father? (probably not, though I recognise the unkind thought this implies).
  21. As an ASM in my son's troop I signed off on 1 MB (and his mother did 2), they always do a group MB owing to the logistics of semi-rural life. I did not sign off any requirements (ok, the service since I have the pc with the records). I'd let him show me, agree that it was good, then tell him to ask Mr Tom or a PL to review and sign if he approved. After the first couple times he learned to omit the middleman. His Eagle BOR was 1 week ago. He is one of only 2 sixteen year old eagles the troop has produced since I've been associated with them. Most wander in at about 17.999
  22. Scoutfish, Here's to hoping you are one of the one's that comes out with a favorable view. I was not, although to be fair I did not complete the course. A classmate also was not, and he completed both the course and ticket (one of the items was mine, I believe).
  23. Ours is a surprisingly rural area for being near a major city. The school buses have changed over the years from picking up every few houses, to picking up at each house. By policy, the kids are not allowed to cross the street to get on (or off) the bus at the driveway of the neighbor across the street. My mother-in-law has driven a bus for many years. The kids/parents only pull the wait in the house and expect the bus to wait trick once or twice. So far, admin backs her up when she leaves them watching the tail lights recede in the distance. It probably won't be too long before she
