Please note: it included the following

National photo shoot for the new Cub Scout handbooks ! For updated information send questions to Family.Program@scouting.org!

It bothers me when real scouts are not used in photos, like the fake Eagle Scout with TWO Camping merit badges on his sash who appeared on the back of merit badge pamphlets.

Those girls can't be Cub Scouts yet, right?

  2. As I recall, she has been a scout in Canada and a Venturer in US. Her family is heavily involved in Scouting; her brother is an Eagle. As she said earlier ,  "I am 16 and have been an unofficial member of the Boy Scouts for 12 years. I tagged along with my older brother, wearing the same uniforms, earning badges and learning to camp along with the other boys. ... For the past four years, I have been publicly advocating for girls to be admitted as full members of the Boy Scouts. ."

Seems to fit the new narrative coming from National, so a win for National and a win for her.  I imagine National is giving serious thought if they should "select" the first female Eagle or leave it to chance.

  3. Well we knew this was coming...

A Bridgehampton teen who has advocated tirelessly for years for the right for young women to join Boy Scouts saw victory recently — but, sadly, by the time girls are allowed to join Boy Scout troops in 2019, she will have aged out of the program.

To that end, her father Gary Ireland and the rest of Sydney Ireland's family are urging people to write to Boy Scout President Randall Stephenson and Chief Scout Executive Michael Surbaugh and ask them to allow Sydney "to join the organization immediately so that she can have the opportunity to work towards the Eagle Rank. . . Please give her the opportunity to be part of the change and finish what she started," Ireland wrote.

So if she and her family are successful, maybe there will be "soft launches" in some Scout troops soon or maybe a full path to Eagle will be implemented in Venturing.

    Could be a win-win.

That's some parents, but  not all of them.  And if Scout kids are at camp and they go on a date, it's not that bad.  You guys say you don't want adults around, except when you do!  Many parents are very supportive of their kids' activities.

There is coffee all over my screen. :o

Scouts going on a date while at a scout activity? Not happening.

One regarding BSA and Knives, while they do have policies, those policies stress"legally owned" so knife laws do need to be considered. As for school policies, how many Scouts have gotten in trouble for carrying a spork to school? Anyone remember the Eagle Scout with camping gear in the trunk of his car, including a knife and axe, that was suspended?  Graduating senior, West Point bound, and a volunteer firefighter if memory serves, yet got suspended b/c of wood TOOLS ( emphasis) in the runk of his car.

Does anyone recall if National, Council, or his SM contacted the school system or otherwise spoke on that Eagle Scout's behalf?

IMHO, it would be helpful if the back of the Totin' Chip had a what-to-do list and phone contacts for when a scout's knife wanders into a restricted location.

  6. The Alamo Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America will invite girls to join Cub Scouting from January to May 2018.
This “soft launch” will be open to girls currently in kindergarten for Lions, and girls in the first through fourth grades in Tigers, Wolves, Bears, and Webelos I, a BSA spokeswoman said.

Cub scout dens will be single-gender: all boys or all girls.

The official launch will be at the beginning of the 2018/2019 school year. Webelos II girls will also have to wait until January 2019 when the older girl program is launched, the spokeswoman said. The older girls program will enable them to earn the Eagle Scout rank.
