  1. sporting uniforms are not free in our neck of the woods, Pay to play to the tune of $500 for the first sport and not to exceed $1200 per family. You cannot tell me you haven't seen the kids around town in their soccer, baseball, football or cheerleading uniforms. Every Saturday in our town. (This message has been edited by Basementdweller)
  2. It has been my experience that a percentage of scouters will argue just for the enjoyment of it. I like the comparison to athletic or band uniforms. I understand the shirts are not protective gear, I have found them to be very durable. I will say my 2 scout shirts and associated pants are the most worn clothing in my closet. I find it curious the looks my son and I get when we stop at an ihop, waffle house or somewhere to eat coming or going to an event. It is a shame the uniform and the men and boys that wear it are viewed as a curiosity by the public.
  3. Our Webelos I's are getting their arrow of light probably in May this year. What does that leave for them to do you ask? We are visiting Troops, camporee's, resident camps, hiking, fishing, FUN and CAMPING and FUN. We just completed a series of winter hikes in a Park system. 10 hikes since Christmas. Had a blast. Are you planning on resident camp??? it can be expensive. I would den camp at least over the summer. Do you have Webelo woods or another web specific camp? Activity pins on camp outs are easy, Bring your subject expert to the camp and have a sess
  4. $145 for day camp???? Wow I will never complain again about our cost We put on our day camp with a budget of $1200 for 130 boys and tag alongs. They charge 55 per youth.. hmmm. Sounds like you have a plan. (This message has been edited by Basementdweller)
  5. Everyone says the webelos program is two years......Your not running it right. Eighteen months. Super Achiever ridiculous. The boys should be crossing over in February to go camping and used to how the troop runs before summer camp. A few Questions. How much have you den camped with your Web den? Outdoor activities? How many troops have you visited? How many times have you camped with the troops? Do you hike, fish, conservation projects??? We camp monthly with our webs thru April thru October. Activity pins are mostly earned on the campouts. Our boys are r
  6. the boys disappear after getting their ranks at the blue and gold?????? I would adjust the schedule so they didn't earn them till april and award them in may. Eagle factory in the making.
  7. Scoutfish your speaking of cub scouts. I would not expect a Cub Scout Parent to spring for Pants because most Packs aren't that active. The discussion is of Boy Scouts at a Boy Scout Camporee type event. Our Troop Leadership and most of the Youth leaders will be in full uniform, I would not expect a newly crossed over boy to have the complete uniform yet. Just too darn expensive. There is no such thing as a Class A or B uniform. There is Field and Activity uniforms. Field is the common Scout shirt, pants and leather shoes or boots. Activity is a scout t-shirt, pants an
  8. We did bag lunches, as well. how are you going to keep them cold? The inspector will ask. We have a district member that has a refrigerator trailer, we loaded all of the lunches in totes by den and loaded them into the trailer. the main thing about the food is your not cooking in a kitchen and cleaning up. Basically your gonna have maybe silverware and a cup to clean with what your proposing. I think $5 for a foil meal, drink and dessert is kinda steep. We did dutch oven deserts and the boys loved it. Peach cobbler, black forest cobbler. what fun. I am not sure about
  9. PD= Program Director?????? CSDC=Cub Scout Day Camp?????????? So what is the cost of your Day Camp and what is the program your offering? If your day camp cost $5 then another $5 will be out of line. if it is $100 probably not. But $5 for one meal is a bit much. What exactly are you serving? Does that change the licensing for the food?
  10. That list is two years old. you could do your own survey and submit the paperwork. I have found that most state parks meet scouting Standards I would not limit myself to that list. What type of camp out are you planning???? Just get the guys into the woods or a specific activity???
  11. Blake not knowing what region of the country your in it is hard to make a judgment. Florida or south no excuse not to be in full uniform. Even financial. We have a uniform closet for young men of lesser means. Minnesota or colder climate uniform pants could be worn under coveralls or bibs. Just curious is the full uniform only for courts of honor??????? When ever my son and I are at scout events we are both in full uniform. Den hikes, Troop outings, round tables.......Lead by example. So I wonder what example that SM was setting. Making excuses for the scouts.
  12. How about starting with what do you do currently?
  13. Wolf The service project must be done in the centennial year with is officially Sept 1, 2009 thru December 2010 according to the centennial Patch website.
  14. Let me get this straight......your going to count one service project for two bobbles for your shirt. Bulldog, I would hope that counting camping nights isn't an issue. If it is get that troop outdoors. I don't like double dipping. True a scout is Thrifty, but he is also trustworthy. The spirit of scouting isn't to short cut. Just my opinion.
  15. Just curious, I have been invited to be friends on a couple of social networking sites with a number of youth scouts. What are your thought???? I have chosen not to add them to my friends list. Nothing personal a couple of the young men are fantastic boys. Just avoiding any possible issues.
  16. hmmmm, sounds like a lot of work. I already hold 5 different positions with in scouting plus some adult training course instruction. Sounds like too big a commitment. Thanks for all the responses.
  17. I think you will find that most councils do not actually have the before mentioned list. The answer usually is stay in a state park they are ok and safe.
  18. Well my big mouth has written another check. I was handed a single page copy of a job description. So could you more experienced guys fill me in on the real deal.
  19. The troop I mentioned claims to be boy lead, but the evening we visited it looked very adult lead. They were doing tree identification, instead of a senior scout doing it one of the adults was acting as the instructor. At the camp out I witnessed the adults did most of the cooking. They are long time scouters for the most part. With that many adults I am worried about boy lead irregardless what they say. Jersey I worry about that same thing. Too many cooks in the kitchen sort of thing. Too many adults with too many messages and rules. 4 adults is enough in most cases
  20. So what do you do when a troop has 33 adults and 16 boys? A neighboring troop has more adults than boys on the campouts. At the camporee last fall they had 9 boys and 20 adults. Do you limit the number of adults on outings???????
  21. Not specific to my council. all of the neighboring councils do it as well Deliverable, fire starting kit, camp gadget, personal first aid kit, knot board on and on
  22. Councils in our area offer a number of enhanced basic leadership courses, 4 weekends, and all of them use some type of a bolo with wooden beads on them, One is an indian, eagle, bear, and a turtle. Basically it depends on when time of year. The wooden beads on the bolo on the amount of deliverables you complete. I guess your seeing something similar.
  23. Portion control Portion Control Portion Control They ate all the food and drank all the punch before the last table was served. I will bring the dish for the potluck, and also stop at subway for something for me to eat. People come out of the wood work for a pot luck. People I have never seen before......crazy. Make an announcement before people line up to eat, something a long the lines of. "We have a large number of people with us today, Please taste everything and wait for seconds to be called before the second trip thru the line."
  24. The quality of the program is directly proportional to the enthusiasm of the leaders. The easiest best way to locate a Pack close to your home is call the council, they will direct you to a pack close to you.
  25. I have an electric fire pit I use all the time at Pack meetings. Orange, purple and blue lights and a fan.....looks cool. The boys love it We have fires all the time. We put a barrier, custom expanded metal in a frame, around the fire to keep the boys out of it. They can still get to the fire with their hot dog and marshmallow sticks. The boys have nothing to do with the fire other than enjoy it.
