We offer a new Scout Parent welcome folder. It includes, medical form, sample boys life, map to the scout shop and hours of operation, Calendar of den, pack and events, A welcome to scouting handout that explains the structure of scouting, Helpful information sheet that includes all of the leaderships phone and email addresses. Before camp outs we review an abbreviated version of Youth Protection for the parents. But an actual Pack Parent Handbook is a good idea. Guidelines are a good place to start.

I have done some searching and in perfect BSA style they have not directly answering the question. It is no where in writing. But I did find a link that says that a Scout cannot begin working on his next rank until the beginning of the Program year or he graduates his current den. http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/CubScouts/FAQS/awards.aspx I hear scoutnet rolls over June 1st. this is the first year I can see what happens for myself. I will let you know. Day camp and such will be wasted on a rank that he should have earned by February.

Question about official BSA backpack
Basementdweller replied to AT1988's topic in Equipment Reviews & Discussions
sounds like a place for a water bladder. -
In my opinion you are over analyzing everything. Why not focus on being a fantastic Super doper den leader first??? Just a thought. The way I measure my success is if around the campfire as some point in the future the boys talk about what he have done. In our area they hand out the recharter info in November, I would ask the CM or whom ever does it for your Pack to watch. To be real honest, I don't care about what the council, district or national does. Just tell me the deadlines and what I need to do to meet them. Very time I hear from District it usually means more work.

The webelos fill out a youth application and transfer to the new unit. The transfer costs $1.
-
A shame about the fund raising $$$$. Fund raising is a unit specific thing. In our unit we have a policy that each parent who wishes their scout to participate must sign. Our unit does transfer the funds in the scouts name to the new troop or pack. I assume he is the boys natural/genetic Father. Youth protection really doesn't apply to natural genetic parents as leaders. You can sleep in the same tent as your son. Drive to meetings with him alone in the car. I don't think Youth Protection ever had the intent of protecting a scout from his natural parents. Now if you had a protection order that is a different story. I understand that the parents are mad at you. So for $300 how many lives are you impacting???? How many parents are taking off work? how many scouts are being taken out of school???

Nope, Let me see, 4 months in scouting and with some on line courses from my.scouting an instant authority is born. my thought is learn to crawl before you learn to fly.

Again you over analyze. The only thing that happens June 1st or at the end of your schools year is the boys stop working on their current rank and arrow points and Start the next. Far as the title on the card who cares. It is just a title. Positons I currently hold, Day Camp Program director, ACM Pack 1, Webelos Den Leader Pack 1, Bear Den Leader Pack 2, Committee Member Pack 1 and Pack 2. I enjoy the boys so who cares about a title on a card. If you changed positions in the Pack, did you fill out a new Application as is required?????? Every time you change or take an additional job you need to fill out another application. I have one nearly completed handy at all times. If you didn't I would complete one and turn it into your CC. The charter is a dynamic thing, The boys who pay their fee in December are paid members until the following December, unless they are kicked out of scouting for some reason they have a right to remain on your charter until it is renewed. As far as new boys go, I believe they will show up on your charter a couple of weeks after their application is filed with council. To be real honest I have never checked. You can manage your den membership roster as you see fit. My advice is to learn your position, enjoy your time with your son, it is all about him and his scout experience. RIGHT?????

What does Wood badge curtail?
Basementdweller replied to Scoutfish's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Now that is funny, I think the subject should have been "What does Wood badge Involve?" Curtail restrict: place restrictions on http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=u8N&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=s&defl=en&q=define:curtail&ei=yTq3S_3QNZKoNr2P1eEL&sa=X&oi=glossary_definition&ct=title&ved=0CAYQkAE I am not sure what web browser you use, I would try Firefox it has a built im real time spell checker. -
How much bleach or sanitizing tablet shold we use?
Basementdweller replied to T2Eagle's topic in Camping & High Adventure
Beavah It is still being taught that way. Three tubs with the last being a sanitizing rinse. When I personal camp, I don't do the sanitizing rinse. When in scouting do as scouts do I guess. -
What does Wood badge curtail?
Basementdweller replied to Scoutfish's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
You completed Baloo fantastic. But more importantly have you completed your webelos position specific training yet??? If you can't put on a solid program for your current responsibility then woodbadge or not your not doing your duty to your webelos. Just an observation you have no boy scouting experience, in theory you understand the Patrol method, have you actually seen it. Have you camped with a Boy Scout Troop??? How many Scout Masters do you know and interact with??? How many SPL, ASP, PL and PLC have you met, seen, talked to or participated in? Learning theory is worthless without practical experience. I would give it a year or two before you take it. You haven't been in scouting a year yet, you have much to learn and plenty of time. -
Is the Uniform required???? Prove it
Basementdweller replied to Basementdweller's topic in Cub Scouts
but we are talking Cubs not boy scouts there is no board of review. -
How about a Committee Chair, Secretary, Membership Chair, Public Relations (handles calendar, newsletter and Pack meeting flyer, Popcorn Kernal, as you mentioned Advancement coordinator, treasurer and Pack trainer. Go for it. But remember the bigger the committee gets the slower it moves and politics become more of an issue.

Appropriate discipline for disrespect
Basementdweller replied to 5scoutmom's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I would approach the COR and CC about the adviser. He should be impartial and it sounds like there was some previous history, with the delayed BOR. He needs to be removed for the good of the Troop. Especially if the other volunteers fear retribution. -
scoutfish The bear den and the Webelos den is two different creatures. Akela can sign off on the cubs achievements. In the Webelos den the Den leader signs off on the requirements, not the parent. Now there are some the Parents need to complete, but the AB's the Den Leader does. Have you got the books yet?

Appropriate discipline for disrespect
Basementdweller replied to 5scoutmom's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Wait now. No one knows exactly what happened. We have only heard one side. We all know some adult scouts can be really horses behinds. Especially committee members. Had some bad experiences with them, It is really easy to sit on the sideline and comment about things going on in the troop with out actually participating. Your son may or may not have been right in his actions. His statement is correct that respect is earned, a shame the CC is such a small man to extract revenge instead of using it as a teaching moment. If you pull him from the Troop the lesson you are teaching is flee in the face of conflict. -
Is the Uniform required???? Prove it
Basementdweller replied to Basementdweller's topic in Cub Scouts
I shake my head at this nonsense......Either it is required or it is not. -
Scoutfish your over analyzing again. First off it is not the fault of the Den leader if the boys don't advance, The Den leader sees them one hour a week, tough to advance in that period. Parents are more responsible for the lack of advancement. Do you guys use an advancement software package, then the solution is easy. Run an advancement report and see what they need. If not ask the parents to write down what the boys need or have 5 boys show up early for the meeting and go thru the books, I bet you can figure out real quick what they need to advance. Whittle chip can wait. Their rank advancement cannot. June 1st is the dead line.(This message has been edited by Basementdweller)

Is the Uniform required???? Prove it
Basementdweller replied to Basementdweller's topic in Cub Scouts
Our Pack is losing scouts because the Den leaders are telling the Parents they have to have purchase uniforms. I have been taught that the uniform is not required. as pointed out it is a method. I need a link to national to either prove or disprove this myth. Everything I have found on the Cub side says it is require or that is how I read it. -
I usually were bolos. But when I wear neckerchiefs I tuck the collar inside the shirt. I had collarless shirts when I was a Cub and boy scout.
-
Well, I have got myself into another prove it situation. One of the den leaders said the uniform is required. In my Adult leader training, don't remember where it was at, Could someone provide a link or where to look.

Scoutfish Hiking boots have a time an place, a Cub hiking a day hike probably isn't one of them. During the summer I hike in running shoes or trail running shoes. I hike and backpack roughly 1,000 miles year round. Now if we are going out for 3 or 4 days and my pack is heavy I will wear my boots Asolo gtx 520 I think is what I have, but Vasque trailrunners the rest of the time. If you put a boy in a full leather leather or synthetic leather hiking boot your asking for blisters and hotspots, 90% of boys in the cub age cannot hike in the boots because they are too heavy. I have seen it, 2 miles out and the boy is too tired to pick up his feet. I had read that every pound on your foot is like 2-5 on your back. If you are hiking an established trail let them hike in running shoes. Make sure they actually tie them and they fit snug.

Background checks / guidelines for participating parents?
Basementdweller replied to Liz's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Wow, If I was a parent of another scout in the troop I would want to be informed of this. -
when can you start working on arrow of light
Basementdweller replied to rrelaljrksw's topic in Cub Scouts
Well my son who will be a webelo is going to two day camps and a Resident camp over the summer....So does that mean he is active. I expect him to have all of the activity pins earned for his AOL by the time the rest of the Pack starts in the Fall.
