Directly from the guide to safe scouting The driver must be currently licensed and at least 18 years of age. Youth member exception: When traveling to and from an area, regional, or national Boy Scout activity or any Venturing event under the leadership of an adult (at least 21 years of age) tour leader, a youth member at least 16 years of age may be a driver, subject to the following conditions: 1. Six months' driving experience as a licensed driver (time on a learner's permit or equivalent is not to be counted) 2. No record of accidents or moving violations 3. Parental permission granted to the leader, driver, and riders The answer appears to me to be yes he can if it is ok with the Event/Outing Leader with the other 3 conditions being met. Now you understand that this can all change tomorrow.

First year WEBLOS asking about advancing to Boy Scouts from
Basementdweller replied to JerseyScout's topic in Cub Scouts
At eleven they can join boy scouts with out the arrow of light. My son will jump from first year weebs to boy scouts. here is how it is gonna happen. Resident camp Aquanut, geologist, sportsman, Scientist, outdoorsman and readyman. I have asked the troop to put on two activity pin weekends, hopefully the boys will earn one per weekend. My son will turn 10 in October 2010 which means the earliest he could cross over is April 2011. I hope that he will have his AOL completed by Christmas enabling the cross over at 10 1/2. He is ready to cross over now, he has camped with the troop for years already, I am ready to cut the apron strings and send him on his scouting experience. -
thx scout nut. He is really immature for his age, and to be real honest it will surprise me if he actually crosses over. I was just planning a head for next years recharter as I will probably be Cub Master. Jerry

No clue about this young mans story, he seems normal enough, maybe he was held back a grade. He turns 11 in October 2010, he is currently 10 and a bear. My question is can he remain in Cub Scouts after we recharter or does he need to move to boy scouts at age 11.
-
Had a discussion with the Cub master, we have a number of bears who will be 11 before the next recharter. Can they be put on the charter at 11???????

You guys are silly There are a number of Packs in our District that own their own BB guns and Archery equipment with full knowledge of the District Exec. The DE and I had a conversation over lunch about low attendance at day camp. I was expected to increase day camp attendance. I visited all of the Packs in the district and tried to sell the day camp using fishing, bb and archery. After a month of this......... I had lunch with the DE again and told him what I was told by Pack 123, 456,678 and 987. If he wants his day camp attendance up to take care of it. Guess what he kept his mouth shut and none of the boys from those Packs attended. Now am I telling you to violate any BSA policy or recommendation????? NO Just stating my experiences.

Can DL also be the Pack Trainer ??
Basementdweller replied to WestCoastScouter's topic in Open Discussion - Program
as stated one official job per unit per volunteer. -
I have used Pack master. Spend the extra and get the dot net option. The problem with on line solutions is you need a network connection to use it. Most will work on blackberrys. Hopefully your Charter org has an accessible wireless connection. I don't like parents entering achievements in to the database, irregardless of what you chose.

scoutfish...... At the cub level, active doesn't really matter. There really isn't positions of responsibilities or required events such as camping or service projects. Generally if the boys shows he advances. Where it comes into play is the life scout that stops showing at about 14, then occasionally cherry picking events till he is 17 and filling out college resume's then he rushes to finish his eagle. There is a bunch of unfair and ugly things that happen as a result.
-
As others have said it is your sons choice. Back off and let them chose, then support them. I have been thru changing Packs a couple of times, The last one the boys in the den chose. So far it has been great.
-
The religious emblems probably should never be done as a den. Lets see in our den we have Methodist, Protestants, Catholics and Jews. So explain to me how that is gonna work.
-
If the boys is doesn't want to be in scouting don't waste a bunch effort chasing him. Just continue your plan and take pictures and sent them too him. I have wasted too much time chasing boys who I THOUGHT needed and deserved scouting. I have come to the conclusion that the time is better spent on the boys who want to be in scouting. as posted earlier they spend all day as school being lectured, they need scouting to be fun

Has anyone used PM successfully lately?
Basementdweller replied to NE-IV-88-Beaver's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I pm's someone offering free gear, no response. I guessed they were not interested. -
there is a huge difference between "the boys got their cards" and the boy has the skills to actual handle and manage a knife. I use the craft stick knife and sanding blocks. They must first sharpen the knife, which is one of the most important skill, then carve their soap. The beauty of the craft stick is if they start forcing the knife they will break the blade, even in soap. from this method they will learn 1. to sharpen a knife 2. Let the blade do the work 3. Learn the feel of a blade getting dull 4. Patience I really dislike the plastic knife with soap or butter knife with soap. Other than just doing the project what did they learn?????(This message has been edited by Basementdweller)

Get that kid outdoors STAT. You have a very narrow window of opportunity to recapture him. Things need to be in place????????? just do it man. I am not telling you to go camp, But what is available in your area???? Hikes, quick easy and it can be a family event. Have them pack a lunch and bam instant achievement completion. Take them fishing??? Creekin?????? Zoo????? Park with a Naturalist. Going and sitting in a meeting every week is BORING. do you play games at the meeting?????? My favorite as a reward for knot tying is a game I call Kangaroo stomp. After 10 minutes of tying knots and very one completes what we are doing. The boys take their rope and tuck it the back of their pants so it hangs to the floor like a kangaroo tail. Then when you say go they stomp on each others tails till trying to pull them out. Last one standing wins..... Guess what it is loud, fast and they love it. My goal on outings it to make sure they are dirty and exhausted when we get back to the cars.

I really hate these discussions Active means he has registered and is current in his dues Scout spirit means he has not been arrested for anything recently THAT IS THE FACT JACK. Debate all you want above is the truth.

Who would require them to stand in front of Pack and recite the promise, motto and Law? We do. It is called the opening and closing. People it isn't that big a deal. As a boy Scout the SM is require to provide quality control. I would imagine that the CM should have a similar role,

Cub Scouting used to be a parent Akela son activity. With all of the advancement done at home with mom or dad. With Fast Trax being adopted all of the advancement will be done at the den meeting. Why does it matter if he is doing it at home or at the den meeting????? I applaud his efforts.

My son and I read that book and he was in tears at some of the stories. Especially the one that started rolling down hill. Yep a good read.

Knotheads group gets it. If I visited a troop that had the Scouts running the activities and the Leaders dealing with the adults separately that says a lot. Irsap, I have no idea your scouting experiences. But many long time scouters treat it as a club and the Troop as personal property. The meetings are not about the boys and it is about the adults program they are providing to the boys. The way I worded my statement was harsh, but sometime that is what is required. A scout troops leadership needs to turn over. I have met leadership that need to leave scouting. The adults run the program, an example. The entire troop earned the Ad Altare Dei three of the boys were baptist. hmmmmm. How about the SM whose been the merit badge councilor for every single merit badge the troops boys have completed. Who is ultimately in charge of the Program? It falls to the Charter org rep and the committee chair. The problem is most COR are just figure heads who don't understand their role, are under trained or uninterested. I would call an Eagle mill the troop that significantly and consistently performs better than the normal statics for scouts in their troop reaching eagle. If it is 20% or more I would call it a mill. Most troops who I consider eagle mills are very young, they get their eagle and leave. The other values that are instilled 1. The Goal is more important than the process 2. Work Work Work scouting is work 3. Eagle is just another line on a college application or resume I guarantee that an Eagle who finishes it at 17 appreciates it much more than a 14 year old who pounds thru it in a mill. No right or wrong just the quality of their scouting experience.(This message has been edited by Basementdweller)

Start with dump deserts. dump in a couple of cans of fruit in lite syrup Dump in a couple of boxes of yellow cake mix ta da. I would not waste my money on cookbooks. Most of the recipes are terrible. Do a quick google search for Dutch oven recipes and print them. While not completely free it is better to create your own cook book with recipes you might actually enjoy.(This message has been edited by Basementdweller)

One of our parents have one of those crock pots. The heat control is a problem, you cannot get it adjusted low enough to function in the way most of us expect a crock pot to work.

Scoutfish. With your interest and level of activity within scouting. I would like to encourage you to get more training. First get your outdoor cub training, Baloo and Webelos outdoor leadership(owl). Second attend the Boy Scout training, our council offers a couple of sessions a year they typically take three saturdays and a complete weekend. Then take the lnt educator course. Notice no mention of woodbadge.
